It's funny that Phil Johnson talks about Charismatic extremists because He, MacArthur, and Justin Peters sound like Reformed Ayatollahs.

Paul let us know that anything taught in Corinthians was not meat, but milk. Therefore, we see that even the Corinthians, who had moral struggles as pointed out by Paul, still operated in gifting, but were flawed. Now, what about Jesus? He operated, not as the Son of God, but as the Second Adam, showing us how we too could not just walk in gifts, but fullness. These cessationists try to reason against the fact that Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever, and that He promised he'd send a Comforter through which He would teach us all things, even things to come (prophecy). You can't get around the reality of supernatural living for the believer unless you're a cessationist whose theology revolves around propping yourself as being esteemed and more righteous, denying the suffering's victory Jesus attained in His atonement.

The statement that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever is a statement concerning His immutability in His deity. It has no application at all in a debate over continuationism and cessationism. The statement regarding Jesus' promise to send the Comforter, in context, has primary reference to His true 11 apostles, and specific reference to specific new divine revelation that would be a part of NT Scripture.

@@TerryYancey-p9v I respect your opinions, but do pray your eyes are open to the fact that He is unchanging, and not a respecter of persons, and therefore would not deny the fruit of His suffering from a later generation, as attained in His atonement at the Whipping Post and the Cross. I'm just sharing in love, because I've already experienced this, though I'm still growing in wisdom, stature, and favor with God and man as Jesus did as our Example. He threw off all rights to deity to show us how to also walk in faith. His commandment and promise for believers to do the same works and greater was a broad application- "believers". To take one scriptural reference in and to interpret it against the whole of His teachings doesn't align with His nature or atonement's victory. I hope I don't sound like I'm preaching at you, but I'm just sharing compelled in love. Just for a last quick point, if we look at the literal Greek where Paul says "...do not despise prophecies", the more literal translation is continual and says, "do not despise the act of prophesying". Paul warned against despising believers operating in prophetic unction. To say that His desire as the Head to work through a Body today has ceased doesn't align with His authority operating through us, in work with our Comforter, in the earth. "And the Lord worked with them, with signs following" is for any believing believer. I lovingly would point you to check out JGLM here on UA-cam. It's sound, line-by-line, precept-by-precept teaching of a man who can't be told it's not for us, because he's seen it first-hand, as have I. One day, a dear homeless man came to me asking for money while I was pumping gas. In short, I noticed half of his face was frozen, and he told me he had a stroke recently. I asked if I could pray for him. Within a minute of laying hands on him, he began to weep, tears streaming down his face, and his other side of his face began to show emotion again as he thought I was some special person, and thanked me. I just wept with him and got to tell him about the Lord. I lovingly challenge you to go check out the ministry of JGLM. The Lord is unchanging. He has not left us comfortless.

@@credibilitywars8171 God not being a respecter of persons doesn’t mean that what God does for, or allows for one person He does so for another out of an obligation to be fair to everyone, or to do the same for everyone. Biblically speaking , God not being a respecter of persons means that God does nothing in terms of blessing for any person based on anything inherent in or about that person. It’s God acting in total freedom, based on His sovereign will to do what He chooses to do, and we are only recipients of His gracious choices.
The statement about greater works has to do with greater works in extent, not greater works in power. And, He was speaking primarily to his 11 true apostles. Not one of them, by the way, and we can include the apostle Paul for good measure, not one of them ever did any works that were greater in power than Jesus.
The statement about despising prophetic utterances was made during the time when that was still ongoing. Now that the Church has been built on the foundation of the Apostles and Prophets, there is no need for those offices or those gifts. They have ceased. Now we have the completed collection of the more sure prophetic Word, called the Bible.
Your experience you shared doesn’t have anything to do with the gifts of healing. God still heals when He chooses to, but He doesn’t give the gifts of healing to anyone. The sign gifts have ceased. I never said, nor do I believe the Jesus desire work through a Body today has ceased. Only that the sign/revelatory/apostolic gifts have. If they were still in operation there would be zero dispute or doubt about them because they would be undeniable.

Un-add this .. 1 Corinthians 14 . Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy. For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit.
