Continental Der Baron Projekt x Trail King ProTection Apex Combo - Long Term Review

- Over the past 4 months I decided to change up my tyre choices. When it comes to a tyre I want versatility, big grip up front and fast rolling in the rear with decent braking traction. This led me to try the Continental Trail King and the Der Baron Projekt in the freshly updated ProTection Apex Casing. Check out what I thought and some comparisons to other tyres on the market.

Exactly the combo I am looking at for my bike. Great review. I subscribed.
Thanks mate, really appreciate it!
Great review!! I use a DHF on the front and recently put a Trail king on the back. I am super surprised by how great the Trail king is for a rear tire! 10/10 would recommend! Ps: I ride in mostly dryer conditions with some wet every once in a while :)
Just pick some up looking forward to my first ride hello from California
Fantastic review dude, thank you!
2020 Scott Ransom 27.5 RockShox SRAM build Same tyre set up .CHEERS
i have run the mountain king on the rear in brutal conditions and its held up really well i had a cross king on the front and it got smoked so i think im going to look at the trail king as my front for a more progressive feel and the mt king rear has a more progessive feel (on /off) on my trail set up
Trail king is definitely a great tyre and really predictable in my experience so you should like it.
Nice reading!
I have a mountain king front and cross king rear both 2.6, fast and grippy combo!
Im using the Baron Project 2.6 B+ front and Mountain King 2.6 B+ out back on my Trek Remedy 2018 and its proving to be a pretty good combo for grip and speed. But when I ordered I considered the Trail king but it wasn't out in 2.6 yet... Did you consider Mountain King out back at some point?
I like the looks of the tread pattern on the mountain king, however its only available in the protection casing not the protection apex. On my local trails I need the extra puncture protection. Personally I haven't used the tyre or the protection casing so cant really comment too much about it.
what measures have you've been using? 29x2.4 for both? If this is the case, 2.4 old trail king used to be really a monster big tyre, much bigger than old baron 2.4. What did you find out regarding thread and casing dimensions?
2.4 for both. They are definitely less balloonie (if thats a word) than the old version. They measure around about 2.3-2.4 inches, so pretty true in size.
I currently run the TK 2.6 in front, a 2.6 MK (mountain king II) in the rear. Ride them on XC, enduro and even DH conditions, on all types of conditions (they vary greatly - from dry hardpack to wet loamy, even muddy conditions). The MK definitely lacks brake grip for DH stuff, the TK does suprisingly well - does better than I expect a true all rounder to do in all conditions and trails. So I'm considering a TK front AND rear now. Any thoughts on that?
I prefer having more grip in front than I do in the rear but I'm not sure what tyre would be a slightly more grippy all round tyre compared to the TK. Probably the DHF right? (Though for no reason I hate running different brand front and rear tyres) The der baron seems to be a soft / wet ground specialist and the kaiser a dry / hard ground specialist.
did you go with it for front and rear? looking to buy new tires so i am just wondering :)
@@MetalcoreOverAnything only front (TK) so far
I have a 2018 Spectral with Maxxis DHF 2.6 front and Rekon 2,6 from the factory. I just ordered a set of Trail King 2.4 with the Apex protection on ebay--75.00 for 2 tires so a great deal, my Rekon got a puncture so I have a tube in it now,, 2019 Spectral comes with 2.4 so I will see if there is any difference, always good to have a few spares anyway
Sorry for the late reply. How is it going? tried them out yet. I havent used the trail king upfront before so it would be interesting to hear your opinion
No problem about reply No I haven't mounted them yet, actually I just got a pair of Vittoria Mezcal G 2.6 for 72.00 a pair so now I have a choice--contemplating either DT XM 1501 or I-9 Enduro, both over 100 grams lighter and on sale --if I mount the Trail Kings 1st I will let you know how I like them compared to the Maxxis DHF and Rekon
Any chance to review Der Kaiser too? Kinda sad to see so little videos on them.
Trying the Performance Trail Kings 27.5x2.4. Seems like most like the Trail Kkng pattern, but go for the Apex casing. Will see how the lower spec Trail Kings perform in North Texas. We only ride dry here because of clay soils. Have been told higher performance soft compounds matter if you ride hard. That's not exactly me with 1yr of riding. What are your thoughtd on tire compounds? Which do you think matters more, Tread or Compound? Thx for the videos! 👍
Sorry for the late reply. I feel the tread pattern will really dictate the terrain/riding style you do and the compound will determine your grip levels but they really go hand in hand. For instance compund and tread pattern impacts grip and rolling speed. An example, I would run a dual compound Maxxis DHF on the front as there isn't enough grip but I would run a triple compund DHF up front. In enduro riding most people will run an aggressive tread pattern in a harder compound in rear for faster rolling speed with a softer version upfront for more grip. I will always take something soft upfront everytime, in the rear grip is less of an issue.
Magic mary/hands dampf or der baron/trail king ?
Good as vid bro
Thanks mate!
Hey, what internal rim width are you running while using the de baron, thanks !
Would you run the TrailKing front and rear?
Trail King 2.2 is it okay when you use it on long ride?
which do you feel like rolled faster? DHF vs Der Baron
DHF for sure
Your video Help me out.thanks
Would you use a Trail King for a front tyre?
Trail King Front and rear!
Yes
How's the climbing performance with Trail King? Does it grip well on technical, steep climbs?
Its hard to answer mainly because you could see technical terrain differently... But i think you have to try it so far its best tyre i had i use it whole year including winter + snow
Now im going to try front DHR II or baron and back trailking... Just to try something new but i was Happy with trailking front and back even in winter climbs...
My der barons warped pretty badly.
Definetlly der baron projekt 2.6 for wetter stuff
