As a child abuse survivor, the very first book I ever read at 11 years old was mommie dearest, it was a very important book. It really got people talking about this issue and it certainly helps you get through life as it is. With that said, it does not hinder my fascination and love for Joan Crawford’s movies & life story. Thank you for awesome interview Harvey!
I think “Mommy, Dearest”, is a bit heavy for an 11-year-old to read in my humble opinion. That being said, I am happy that you are able to separate the artist from the art. Thank you for your support of our show.
@@harveybrownstoneinterviews8980 lol I was young, I didn't know all the big words but sure related to it. The movie would have been a whole other story if Anne Bancroft had taken the part… Dot.
It's so cool you posted this interview at this time because I have been doing a deep dive into Joan and her career. She was fascinating and beyond appealing. Her body of work speaks for itself. In interviews she always conducted herself with class and dignity. I loved that she was more than just an actress. Her affiliation with Pepsi Cola is quite an interesting story as well. She was a bright and talented business woman. Another great interview Harvey!!
As with Jeff, my first intro to Joan was through "MD" when it came to theaters in 1981. I was also 14. She's definitely my favorite female actress from Hollywood's Golden Age. Thank you Harvey and Jeff for an interview that was both interesting and enjoyable.
This is a reboot of an interview we did 2 years ago. It’s been re-released to include the ad for the delicious “Joan Crawford Coffee” from www.hollywoodblends.com.
This interview, filmed 2 years ago when we first started our show, has been re-released because we’ve inserted an ad for the new blend of “Joan Crawford Coffee”. If you're a big Joan Crawford fan, don't miss my interview with Joan's grandson Casey LaLonde. His knowledge of his grandmother's career is truly impressive.
Such a great interview! It would be fun to see you interview him on some of Joan’s later films and life. I follow his Hollywood Royalty page and it’s a lot of fun. Thank you for posting this!
He can believe whatever he wishes but there is 9 years between Christine and Christopher and the twins. Domestic violence and child abuse are often, among other things, crimes of proximity. Christina describes with one notable exception how the physical abuse stopped once she went away to Chadwick. In her book "My Way of Life" Joan describes how the twins didn't even live in the New York apartment with her and Steele. They lived down the street with their Nanny. As I understand it the four children never resided together so that the twins might have had a completely different experience than Christina and Christopher isn't hard to explain. It was also a very different time in Joan's life professionally and personally.
It is true. My Mom's maiden name was Joan Crawford. I think they probably should have been shot but my grandparents, with the last name of Crawford, thought it was a cute idea. Mom said the question she got most was whether the Hollywood star was a relation. Mind you, this was in the 50's. Maybe this is part of the reason Miss Crawford has always fascinated me and the "came from nothing" plays a large part. With her quirks and predilections, the phrase "warts and all" comes readily to mind. Even extreme behavior in the context of this woman does not seem unrelatable or foreign, but a reminder---yes, that can happen. I have read much about Joan Crawford. It is the quote from Helen Hayes which comes to mind. "Joan tried to be all things to all people. I just wish she hadn't tried to be a mother."
Kudos to you for wearing a tie all the time. Recently I saw on UA-cam a tape in conjunction with a book you wrote and you had a mustache! 2 questions: Are you in Canada still (as opposed to "going Hollywood")? Also, is the coffee company yours?
@thomasalbert6687 I wear a tie to show respect to my guests and my audience, to convey that I’m a pro. Yes I am located in Toronto, but in my head I live 1/2 time in NYC and 1/2 time in Hollywood. Sorry. I do not own the coffee company but I sure wish I did!! They make the best coffee in the world!! Our coffee blend is immensely popular. I hope you’ll order it and see for yourself!
Well if you'd told me you were perched at Hollywood and Vine with strong binoculars around your neck, I would've believed you. In my next life if I can't come back Dutch, I want to come back Canadian. People are super-duper there!
Think of it.... JC rewards/awards were from her devoted and loving fans which is more important than an Academy award which can be impersonal and all business.
He's not very specific... we Crawford fans are very ardent about what are her great talents & self-made persona, the ultimate template of a Hollywood star... seems like you know way better the Crawford story You're right Possessed & Autumn Leaves are great... Humoresque is ultimate along with Mildred
@@harveybrownstoneinterviews8980 you're knowledge of these great artists mirror what gay men have, for decades, dissected with great indulgence, because we understand their magnification of women's great power, sexually & cosmetically, moreso in that time of history
I didn't like Jessica Lange's work as JC in "Feud". But I did like the series as a whole, great script, production design, and cast in general, specially Alfred Molina as Robert Aldrich who should have got an Emmy nomination, at least.
I got interested in JC because of a clothing designer in one local theater who adores her. PS - he met Christina C at a meet n greet and did NOT find her credible.

I wasn’t aware that Anne Bancroft was offered the part.
Yes, she was actually cast in the part first, but left because she was not happy with the script.
Well I thought the movie was faithful to the book. And “Mommie Dearest” actually triggered my interest in Joan Crawford.
Ty LOVELY Harvey for another great interview ahh old Hollywood Joan Crawford brilliant actress I’m gonna order me some of this coffee😁🇨🇦🇨🇦
Make sure you order some Harvey Brownstone Talk Show Blend coffee as well!!🙏❤️

Yes, Autum Leaves because she's not afraid to mention that she's an "older" woman.
