Yes. A hostel just about possible if small wages or if not easily 'employable' in those better paid agency positions and ads - who gets those!? Perhaps a room in a houseshare so far it is a job just to get in. I had to leave. Not happy to go not happy now away. I am living better abroad, however! England can get anyone to work for peanuts and has no idea how hard it is for those who are regular boring workers.

Minimum wage is now £25k. What is significant is that the salary for many jobs that historically paid more than minimum wage have stagnated.
There is very little point on spending £50k - £100k on university loans if you only expect to earn £5k a year more than minimum wage once you graduate.
The 40% tax (plus NI) on earnings above £50k is another trap to keep us poor. £50k is still a poverty wage in London, and the government takes over half of anything extra you happen to earn. This makes it impossible to save for your future on job income alone. It is also a direct disincentive against working harder by doing overtime or getting a second job, as the higher rate will apply to all extra earnings.
There is also no such thing as a London premium any more, so you may as well look outside of London for work. You will still struggle, but not as much.
There is a default assumption that your parents will help you, but that doesn’t apply to those whose parents can't or won't help their children.

I'm not sure how minimum wage is calculated in terms of salary, but I was on a £23k annual salary in london working full-time. Could you tell me how you got £26k?
When national minimum wage went up recently it went up to around £22.3k. This actually meant I was worse off as my max pension contribution and match were putting me under min wage. Had to lower my salary sacrifice - calculated I was £4k worse off...

@@budgetwithluce 40 hours a week is full time. Anything less is part time. A common scam employers like to pull is to claim a job is full-time then only pay you for 35 hours a week, even if you end up working more hours.

London was tough to live in 1990 up to 2002 when I left. Salary has never been good there despite rent being cheaper than NYC where I am from. I was always skint. Come to Seattle. Minimum wage is $20/hr. 2 bedroom apartment is $2000-2500, one bed is $1500+ in good areas . You would get about $34k after taxes. Food and services are slightly more expensive than in London but the same order of magnitude. Plenty of work. If you are willing to live slightly to the south , rents are cheaper 20%. low crime by American standards. And we have a light rail now to quickly get to downtown. Weather is very similar to London and likely drier . I enjoy coming to London since ethnic food you get in London is much better for the same money you get in Seattle :). Government managing your well being makes the worst job ever - you will pay high taxes and don’t get much in return. Most of the taxes will be pocketed by countless government bureaucrats.

The decision to end university grants was passed through by John Major's govt in 1994. The process was to be incremental over preceding years, which is why it didn't start to be more publicly recognised until Blair's tenure.
Blair simply decided to look the other way and let the policy through when he could have sought to stop it. But it was the tories that abolished grants.

This is the same for many global cities in the world. Maybe if you are a young person living with your parents in the London area you can manage on the lower salary. But anyone else with common sense will soon realise it is very foolish to think you can live in London and have a reasonable standard of living. Not all of the UK has this very extreme situation (although most of the UK now has challenges with the availability and cost of accommodation). Quick way to boost the economy is to build loads of housing. The government and business doesn’t do this because scarcity increases the prices of rent and property ownership. Thus increasing wallet size of incumbent property/land owners. Game is rigged.

All the new build properties popping up overnight and hardly any are social housing is bad - plus why the government sold off large amounts of the housing stock, privatised everything like gas, electric, water, all the basics for living to corporations who charge whatever bills they see fit has added to the problem. It's nice to see this issue being talked about 👍

I have two adult children who are still living at home with us, we live on the London/Essex border and they cannot afford to leave home. They are both on minimum wage and even though they are both qualified they just can’t get a higher wage. It has got to the point that my daughter is looking to move up North as she can get so much more for her money. Where we are, a one bedroom flat to buy is £200000, however up north she can get a three bedroom house for that! She will be buying with a close friend of hers. It’s the only way they can move out and get independence. How can people be expected to manage on £25000 a year!

The government need to invest in other areas of the UK so people don't have to move to London. You are forced to travel in to work from the suburbs and the lower your income, the further out you have to go. Also true, if you are close to minumum wage and single, you will be saving a super long time to have your own property. Everything is set up for couples, or renting.

I lived in London in the 1980's - we were not earning much and living in multi shared accommodation then i.e. no lounge just all rooms used as 'bedrooms'. My mortgage interest rate (when I attempted to buy a flat) in the 1980s was 17% so I part owned a 2 bed flat with a friend and lost it all after 2 years. Nothing has improved. I'm in my 60's still working (no pension yet) and earn about £11,000 a year - awful. Better to live in a more caring equitable country if you have the option.

If I understood correctly, you said pensioners get properties for cheaper? That’s incorrect. Those advertisements for houses are a kind of deal aimed at pensioners: they get the house for cheaper but they have to pay a large share of equity to the company when they die. It would only benefit pensioners who don’t have anybody they want to leave an inheritance to. Also, in general, the situation does seem hopeless for people on low earnings. But don’t be too logical as unexpected events can happen that make house ownership possible. For example, you could meet someone who helps you. Just keep saving and doing what you can towards your goal of home ownership, even if logically it seems impossible.

Pretty much the only way ppl could work in Business Support there was if you were either very young and living with your parents or a middleaged married woman working as a second income, All the while there were staff in their early twenties on 70k... make it make sense

Public service jobs come with London weighting so a newly qualified nurse earns about 30 grand a year - not enough for the work really but more than the 23 grand talked about in the video.
I moved from London to Manchester in 2007 because it was obvious then that London was untenable if I wanted to have a family/own a modest property (despite my entire family being from London and south Herts for as long as peasants have been recorded).

Even then prospects are bleak and there's no guarantee you'll make more money or save as rents keep going up so it's a debt trap. If government keeps on letting the companies pay peanuts they will see more and more youngsters not study and which means they lose out on universities and have less skilled peoppe in the UK. No one from abroad will come to UK to study or settle here due to lack of skilled work paying enough. The companies should be highly monitored by goverment about this and the more people earn more money that will give back to the economy means people will gain spending power and you will see people put more money into essentials and also non essentials and live better life style meaning better mental health and less pressure on people going on benefits also higher wages mean the country will get more tax which can go to NHS and all other things. And taking a wider view, those same people needing government handouts could much easier afford to live elsewhere in the UK but choose to stick with London and all the good stuff it offers.
Meanwhile others in the UK are still on £23k and just getting by in towns with much less to offer and which receive way less government investment to improve them, but paying tax on that £23k to fund less well off people to live somewhere costing up to £1,600 a month in London 🤷🏼‍♂️

Do we have any need for a class system? Can we live out of somewhere more conscious than our egos need to be bigger and better?, to be important, a 'senior authority'? Or on the other end of the spectrum, do we need to feel like the lowest of the low? Surely we can offer the children something far more productive for everyone and far less childish? The whole system is well past it's sell by date. My daughter and all her friends have always worked together and shared, they never had any need to be better than each other, even when running their own market stall. Thank God, they will be showing the way for my local neighbourhood. Your absolutely right, the whole situation is a complete joke, and the joke is on us.

In the UK not even just London,1 person cannot live on minimum wage comfortably. Homes are a mess because many are exhausted by the 40 hour work week and 2 people can't even afford to start a family comfortably. I've luckily bought my first home ( 10 year fixed mortgage for 26 years)with my partner in the countryside but we can't afford a car! So a better job would be harder to find. Also we can't yet renovate because we would have to pay a fortune for the tradespeople due to the lack of them locally as the skills for physical work are lacking in the education.

The future of London will get more and more expensive it's not the ideal place but i feel sorry for the future generations rooms are now costing £800 to £1500 depending on the areas, 1 bedroom flats even in greater London areas are £1500 to £1900 a month and that is expected to be double by 2035 so basically renting a room, but it's not just London it's in many locations in the UK now, many people need to work 2 to 3 jobs and 7-days a week or you have a partner, social Housing is very rare now think yourself lucky if you live in a council property in London with the right band of rent you are very lucky becuase private rent will draw blood from your veins, and way to many dodgy landlords they love london the government need it's not decreasing it's always now increasing now the good old days of London is History, for example Dagenham 4 bedroom House whopping £3400 a month scary scary bringing up a family in greater london is a task now, and this is why no one want's to work anymore get pregnant go crazy mental health go universal credit claim PIP

Whilst I agree that living in London on a small wage is difficult, most of us have choices. I understand some people are very restricted ( if they have a disability or are caring for young kids) but a lot of us do have choices. Its just reality that you can't expect to live in one of the most expensive cities in the world just because you like it or were born there. Neither do you have to accept earning 23k the rest of your life. Get some experience, qualifications and work towards earning more. Live somewhere cheaper. Its not easy but its certainly possible. We have to take responsibility for our own situation rather than expecting the government ( other tax payers) to help us out.

Oh wow, it's been a while since I’ve heard so much nonsense. First of all, if you’re earning £23k a year, why on earth would you choose to live in London? You know, one of the most expensive cities in the world? Here’s a thought-how about moving somewhere cheaper?
Your point on shared ownership is completely false. As a shared owner, you’re responsible for upgrades, but if there are actual faults, the landlord takes care of those-provided you didn’t cause them. In case you didn’t already know, every major city in the world is grappling with economic challenges right now. But it's not the end of the world. There are plenty of options available for people if they actually take the time to explore them, rather than just throwing up their hands and acting like it's all over.

Regarding UK welfare benefits your content was not exactly accurate. In addition to the standard Universal Credit rate you quoted you would then also qualify for Housing Allowance that covers most if not all of your rent and all of your council tax. Where I agree is that unemployed single people without children would struggle anywhere in the UK to afford to live independently in their own home. Its only doable if you can get the additional sickness/disability benefits on top of your Universal Credit. My thoughts are this is why the UK has had a huge increase in people applying for these benefits. The benefits system incentivises people to be deemed sick/disabled. For example my sister, an unemployed single parent with one child in a private rented property, is on these additional benefits and receives the same net income as someone earning approx £35k pa. I dont blame her for taking this route as she would not be able to get a job earning anything like that. She is trapped in this system.

Having lived and worked in London from 2010 - 2018 I was quite enjoying your video until you started knocking the pensioners, maybe you can get a job as Rachel Reeves' special advisor to screw pensioners.
