Comedian Cristela Alonzo on finding humour in hard times

- Growing up, comedian Cristela Alonzo thought "making it" meant living like the people on TV. Although they didn't look like her Latino family - squatting in an abandoned diner with an extension cord for a lifeline - she saw herself in their stories. Now Alonzo, the first Latina woman to create, produce, write and star in a network TV show, has seen her own family represented on TV. Her sitcom "Cristela" mines the humorous side of the American dream. Today she joins Shad to talk about television's influence, how she's found joy in unlikely places, and why she does not, in fact, speak for every Latino.

q is a magazine show that’s unpredictable in the best sense - proud to be “a wild mix of culture by way of Canada” as described by the New York Times. The Globe & Mail noted the show’s “raging popularity across a variety of platforms -- podcasts, television, websites, satellite radio, terrestrial radio, and occasional live remote broadcasts."
Humble and funny!!! I love her💜💜
Humble and loving 🥰
I am missing your show. You made me laugh and cry at the same time. In my eyes it was beautifully executed. Wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors.
Literally when I see Cristela talking about her life and and her struggle, I see a lot of myself. Even though her show might have not been a big success in and of itself, she didn't give up. I found her on Netflix and her stand up made my day, it made me see that I can be someone in life. As a young Latina women, I shouldn't have to feel unworthy or incapable of achieving my dreams, but the sad part is I do sometimes. Seeing her story inspires me and lifts me up. So thanks Cristela, keep killing it!
You should definitely try to launch the show again maybe in a different network..not sure just a thought!!I would definitely watch!!
Ms. Alonzo your a great person you’re spirit shines through so bright.Such an inspiration, much love.
Great that she got a show to allow her humor to shine and tell her stories. I just saw one podcast. Latinos are not monolithic we are so diverse and there are a lot of stories to tell the world.
i hate that ur show was cancelled watched every time. hopefully it does good on netflix. love u
I was just reading Cristela's TWITTER before watching this. She takes her family to Hawaii for Thanksgiving, she books a Thanksgiving dinner for her family 2 months in advance, whoever was doing the dinner RAN OUT OF FOOD, so now she is eating burgers at McD's, the last I read. She is a sweetheart.
Love you,Cristela...you're one awesome woman!!

She is awesome. I love her. She makes me laugh when I need it. The best therapy. She is the best.
Much Appreciations.
I discovered her show " the movie" by watching her comedy show. she's very funny and I'm so sad that they cancelled her show. The Media is all about buzz, and unfortunately there aren't a place on it for minorities. there aren't a lot of black, Hispanic, or Asian shows. They get cancelled without the channel giving press opportunity to the show. it's unfortunate that most white people can't handle minorities talking about diversity because if they did, they would discover that people just want to get a chance, to show their real life, and to be able to coexist. But Trump is a reminder that the majority don't want change, white first, rich first and minorities have to continue working 2x than white people to get a chance. I love you cristela and I hope you'll continue to grow and get your name out there.
Thanks for sharing! And thanks for watching!

That man is so handsome!
She’s not awesome. Es chingona!
I find it hilarious how she claims her show was so innovative, had she never seen The George Lopez Show. George's mother much like her mother on the show hard strict guilt laden, his wife similar to her sister. Only difference was that George's character was well off and they lived better.
she is not George Lopez she is a person telling her story.just like you if someday your story is similar to someone else doesn't mean that you R A copycat
+dany hernandez I didn't say SHE WAS a copy cat. Merely said in interviews she comes off as it was the fire show about a Mexican working class family which isn't true. Chill out.
But your comment is saying it
