So cool to see his kids in the background doing homework. It's good to see you doing your thing and allowing your kids to witness instead of sending them off to their room or something.

Suggestion. Use a piece of scotch tape on the bottom of your presser foot instead of WD40. It works well with vinyls and leathers. WD40 will get on your other fabrics.

You can also use just wax paper over your fabrics. It tears out of your fabric stitching easily and that way you don't have to deal with taping your foot.

Depding on your machine you can get a teflon foot.. The underside of the foot is coated with a thing theflon coating that allows the fabric just to slide through.

I didn't even realize that this tutorial was 22 minutes until after I watched it... I'm glad you made it detailed and went through with every step. Some tutorialists worry there video is too long, dunno why. More of a villain myself, but I found this just as useful :D

+Scott Bayles Hi Scott. I'm Rob Meakin, I'm from England. I love this tutorial, it's very helpful and brilliant. I have a question/request to ask you. As well as superheroes, I'm also a big Star Wars fan and I have been planning to make two Jedi costumes: Luke Skywalker's from "Episode 6 Return of the Jedi" and Anakin Skywalker's from the "The Clone Wars". I have managed to find some sites where I can buy them but they are quite expensive, so as Plan B I've been thinking about making them. Could you please make a tutorial on how I can make Luke Skywalker's boots and Anakin Skywalker's boots? Again I have found some results where I can buy the boots but they are rather costly.
Thank you for your time, please reply as soon as you can.
      Kind regards
      Rob Meakin

Been trying to find boots at Goodwill and no luck. So this is actually really smart way of giving life to old shoes. Also if you handy you and leave excess trim and cut the sole off and glue it to the bottom of the new material. But most shoes inside soles are glued down. Use a multipurpose blade to cut the sole off. Use wing tabs to the bottom and shoe cement.

This was very helpful! I was using another tutorial which was confusing. This simplified a lot! I made a pattern for my boots by sticking my foot in a garbage bag and then wrapping in duct take. You then can cut it out and it's a perfect customized pattern for yourself that you can lay on fabric.

    two suggestions in gerneal..
    - Zipper by the yard, cheaper and you can make any length zipper you need.
    - heat the vinyl slightly; hair dryer or heat gun. It will let you shape it a little easier.

If you want fewer visible seams on your boots you can use contact cement to tack down the seam allowance instead of stitching it down.

So, I believe if you're trying to scale the pattern size down, take your boot/shoe size and multiply by ten. If at scale 100 it'll fit a size 10, so if I scale it down to 80, it should fit a size 8. (at least, I think that's how it'll work)

Hi, Scott! Thank you so much for this tutorial. I've been wrecking my head in finding boots for a costume, and honestly this will help me a lot in creating my own pair. It's absolutely amazing how you did this!
I'm a petite young woman; size 6 in woman's shoes and size 4 in men's. Since you're accustomed to make small shoes for your son: what is the recommended or slight estimate decrease to have a smaller scaled pattern?
    Thank you!

Hi Scott. Great video! I was curious about the excess zipper left over at the back and bottom of the boot. How did you trim that and keep it together? Is there a stopper to keep the zipper from coming apart at the bottom as well? IT seems much loner than the boot in the video, but then at the end, its all nicely trimmed. Anyhow, thanks for the great video!

    • @SchultFamily
      @SchultFamily 9 років тому +2

+Eric Scheck what i would do (i do sew already) is stitch across the zipper side to side along the bottom edge of the fabric. or even up a little (since you won't be unzipping the boot all the way to the heel bottom). sew back and forth (set your machine to satin stitch so it doesn't try to advance, with widest width possible) until it looks secure. Cut the zipper below the stitching. if you use matching thread it won't show.
