Everything else might have changed over the last 50 years, but most of Britain’s canals are still used regularly by walkers, cyclists & narrowboat owners. Many thanks for posting.

Have watched a lot of contemporary canal boat vlogs, and this is better. Nice that there has been such a renaissance since 1975.

Keeping a dog on the narrow boat 🤔
    Can't play fetch.
Won't get harassed by the wife to walk him around the block..
    Where do I sign up?!

We owned and lived on a narrowboat for a few years - it wasn't anything like this one though!
It is a long standing misconception that the railways killed the canal - if it was the railways the canals would have been dead 100-years before. It was the roads that killed both the canals and the railways.

If the roads killed the railways, how come the railways are still in existence *AND THRIVING?*
FOR example, London Liverpool Street services are receiving a complete new set of trains

@@Keithbarber Buy a book on the history of the railways in Great Britain and read it. You will find that in the 1960s Britain lost most of its railway network. This was around the same time as the canals were in serious decline too. At around the same time there was a massive surge in road building. Yes, canals are now thriving again, and railways are finally getting a resurgence, but the railway network especially is a fraction of the size it was before the 1960s.

@@gord307 you have contradicted yourself, first of all you say the railways were killed off, now you say their thriving. One way or the other?

    • @gord307

@@Keithbarber I didn't say that they are thriving. The railways in the UK were cut back to approximately 1/3 of their pre-1960 size. Many towns, including my own, loosing their stations and lines forever. For decades they have been neglected by successive governments, and only recently, with all the issues of congestion on roads and pollution, are the railways finally being given priority. That said, they will never return to their pre-1960 levels.

@@gord307 only about 30% of the network was closed by beeching from what I've just researched my dear fellow - I think you've got some figures muddled up somewhere sir
