  • The 1970s were difficult days for Britain's inland waterways. This 30 minute film lists the various activities to be found on British Waterways but spends most of its time following a family cruising from Hilmorton via Harecastle and the Shropshire Union. Also features the Caledonian Canal, the Welsh Harp (London) and canoeing around Dewsbury.

I’ve watched this film several times & it never fails to delight me. As much as anything else, it’s worth watching for the English countryside & the sounds of bird life. Thanks very much foe posting it.

I really enjoyed this video. It's long compared to modern films but full of lovely detail and excellent sound recordings. A lot of modern filmmakers can learn huge amounts from watching this!!!
I love the tunnel section and can imagine the fun filming this. I also note how the "Dad" looses the scary jumper for more nautical neck wear and check out the camping barges !!!

Well filmed with very professional sound track. Some things NEVER change on the canals though - the weather !!! - judging from his heavy duty waterproofs.

Very cool, I had no idea of any of this. I'd love to be able to take a week or two vacation riding around on those canals. The kayak adventure looked like a lot of fun too! (and I agree with Gene, that logo is really obnoxious)

At 20 minutes, showing how working a lock becomes second nature having been on the boat for more than a week. Coming up the lock with one of the bottom gate paddles open.

Except for 20% of the screen needlessly and selfishly marred by text ruining much of the distant sneery for 33 minutes, this old footage it priceless and vary enjoyable.

UTubeGlennAR --- Back then a lot of public information type films had logos like that. No poi t complaining, it is what it is...

The date definitely isn't 1972 - the film shows Coles Morton boat 'Errwood' which wasn't built until about 1978/79. The film also shows Shelton Steelworks in existence, but apparently not working, which confirms the date of 1978/79.

I have to say the history of the canals has nothing to ender it's self.. children were cramped into tiny cabins well constantly draged across the country by their foolish parents who thought the canals would be a good way to earn a quid...the tow horses were worked till they dropped and keeped their whole lives in barns and when they couldn't work anymore they were sent to the glue factory and subjected to a cruel and painful slaughter...the canal industry was a unpleasant and hard place to be .. unlike today were it's main purposes is for recreation and relaxation!!!.❤️🙏🇬🇧

Get rid of that obnoxus, large logo in the upper right corner.

Gene Bowen --- You're an idiot, it was added when the film was made. Any fool can see that. How do you expect anyone to remove that?

Any fool can see that @ 0:11 to 0:27 the original title graphic, Presents (small text) Waterways - our Heritage, is moving in frame along with the shake of the canal footage, whereas the British Waterways logos (large and watermarked in the upper right corner) are fixed in place by editing, so they have been added at a later date, ...maybe to do with copyright.
