do love the reference at the beginning, conveniently in the last couple years several new elderberry shrubs have popped up in the yard on their own after never being here before
Glad you liked the reference! Birds love the berries and spread the seeds quite readily. The seeds can also last a few years in the soil to my knowledge as well. Hopefully you get a chance to try them soon!
This is like the 3rd video of your I’ve watched. I’ve recently become interested in learning more about the outdoors and nature. Your videos are very helpful and educational. I especially like how you don’t drone on and on about irrelevant things like most UA-camrs. You’re no-nonsense and get right to the point. Subscribed!
I think I saw this on a walk in a forest preserve near a stream the other day. Google lense told me it was elderberry but I always take what Google lense shas to say with a grain of salt. I never got around to researching it further so it's convenient that this video popped up when it did!
Sounds delicious! I need to make that one year when I find elderberries that are safe enough to forage. I'd love to plant some but I don't really have the space where I live now. Always love seeing you in the comments!
@@TrilliumWildEdibles all you need is a cutting or two, they grow like weeds😁 I broke some of the higher branches trying to get the blossoms, they really break easily, and built a teepee with some around my neighbor's cucumbers (mainly so I would not step on her plants). Those sticks are sprouting!!!
Thank you so much for this up close look of the plant. Just the other day I drove by a large, tall shrub that has those same white flowers on it and my first thought was elderberry and it was by the side of a road. I'll have to go take a closer look now that I know what it looks like
It would be nice to know the use of all these plants. I’m a beginner I don’t know much about the benefits of most plants. Do you think you can add a little part on benefits and use please?
Sambucus nigra grows much taller, up to 25 ft. and has less leaflets up to 9 leaflets. They can both be used similarly though and can be a bit difficult to tell apart but I've found that the height difference really sets them apart.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, Go back to poison.lol I am looking for this plant. I have never heard this. Not trying to troll, just wanting to learn. Thank you for taking the time to share with the rest of us!
Not skin irritation to my knowledge but they contain a cyanide inducing glycoside that can cause nausea dizziness and general stomach upset. In larger quantities one can be put into a coma but that's very rare from my knowledge. Cooked berries are not toxic because the cyanide cooks out of them.
@@TrilliumWildEdibles I really appreciate your channel and your response! I am toying with the idea of starting a survival channel. I am not a techie, so it will be gruesome, lol. But I have alot of knowledge to share in difficult times like these. Cheers!
If you decide to do it let me know, I'd love to check it out! Thankfully there's not too much tech involved with UA-cam for outdoor channels, most if not all of it could be done from a phone nowadays. For me it's just a DSLR camera w/ addon microphone and a computer. For editing I use Hitfilm as it's free and does everything needed. For thumbnails I just use inkscape and GIMP, also free. It's pretty easy to get setup overall and there's plenty of tutorials on how to use the software I mentioned. Good luck and I'm glad you like the channel!
Is there another elderberry plant that has leaves that are not serrated? I found one very similar to this one, with very nice berries, but the leaves were not serrated, so I’m confused.
What parts of it can you eat? Or how do we eat it? I see it used a lot in medicine for cold/flu and I’m curious to see if I can get the supplement directly
I would love to but unfortunately I usually only find them near roadsides. Like this one was about 10 feet off a road and it just got sprayed by herbicide a few days ago. If I find one in a safe location I'll definitely do some more videos on it!
@@TrilliumWildEdibles Hey there. I am trying to cultivate some that are growing close to my pokeweed, in the hopes that one day I can make something. I was to tired when I made the first comment here and it sounds so demanding (like a kid pounding the table for dessert) i'm sorry.
@@TrilliumWildEdibles Also, I would love to know your take or information on the tree of heaven or the Paradise Tree. I think they are beautiful. Oh I can imagine that's difficult. My grandma grew some at her house and we amended the soil because her yard was mainly clay and sandy loam. They gre really well with a balanced soil mixture. Always nice seeing you Ron!
Holy Grail referance, very nice!
Who are you so wise in the ways of references?
@@TrilliumWildEdibles, just a fellow Hoosier & Monty Python fan.
Heck yeah, nice to see another Hoosier here!

The flowers and the berries are edible but the rest is poisonous, is that what you're describing?

Eat the berries. Make syrup from the flowers. . Jam from berries, wihr from brief, mead from berries.
What does the berry look like?

🤣🤣🤣🤣 Monty python for the win!!!
Can you eat them in some way or is it not edible😅
Great content, Are there any bushes growing in north central Texas zone 8 a ( Anyone) Thank you, in advance! God bless
My elderberry plants get eaten up. Have had them 3 years and still not seen a berry!
Not too surprising seeing as the birds love them! Out of all the bushes I see usually only a few will have berries.
I'm trying to grow elderberry, not easy up here in the northland with sand & clay mix, as always stay safe & hh, 👍🍁🍀☘️🌿🌾🌵🌳🌲🪴🌼🥀🌹👣
