The ZX81 was my first computer. I loved the tiny form factor. However the 16K Ram pack and edge connector combination meant that with the slightest wobble you could lose everything. As I did after trying to type in a large program from a magazine. The keyboard gymnastics did not help either.
Hi Tom. The Zeddy is very easy to composite mod with a simple transistor mod. This would give you very clear video and you can use a modern TV and not have to rely on RF. I also recommend replacing the 7805 power reg with a DC2DC switching module as you can then get rid of the heat sink!
I use to own one and I had a ram pack in the back. Everytime I hit the keyboard to hard the ram pack it would wobble and the ZX81 frozen like a boss in the middle of programming it. I had to buy a flat cable.
