I'm so excited to have found your channel! I'm interested in public health training but it can be really difficult to understand what it actually involves. I'd be really interested in a video specifically about the application process for doctors - e.g. what kind of things are useful to have your CV etc and the testing process. Would also be cool to feature interviews with other public health registrars to learn more about the variety of placements. I look forward to your next vids!
Hi! Yes of course! I was in the exact same situation, I searched high and low for videos talking about the process. I will definitely make a more detailed video about the application process. Great idea too about featuring other registrars in a variety of placements!
I feel very lost and lonely after a degree in public health and finding your video tonight is not just a blessing but also a reawakening of my dream of becoming a public health practitioner. Pls kindly share more videos regarding baby steps to start off a career in public heath and the pathway to career progression in public health. Once again, thk you so much
Hi. Sorry to hear that. I also completed my MSc in Public Health in 2022. I work in the 3rd sector (charity) as a lead for MH services for a medium sized charity, really great work, interesting etc. but I’m always looking at what is next. It’s just in my nature I suppose. I considered an application for this training but didn’t feel my experience was at the right level yet. I have however started a Professional Doctorate in Health and Social Care Research at University of Salford while working full time and with two small kids, gulp, and my MSc allowed APL to skip to a 3yr research degree, so there are exciting academic/industry options. It’s not often mentioned but once academic and industry experience is at the correct level you can apply for PH Consultancy with PHE through a portfolio route which is something I might consider once my Doctorate is done, and I feel my experience is up at the next level. Just thought I’d mention as there are lots of other pathways
I am so glad you found it helpful! Please do share with others interested in PH and let me know if there is anything in particular you would like more information and I will be sure to cover it
It was a great video💜. I could ever find one like this. I'm from india, friend of mine like to join Masters in public health course in Uk. She completed graduation in microbiology from India. What about job oppurtunities after MPH like getting internships. Please reply if someone knows. Love from india💖
Hi Amaka, no worries - no, they are not. Regardless of background, you are considered a public health registrar whilst in training and a public health consultant when training is done.
Hi dear, thanks so much for this video. Please I have been looking for universities offering Epidemiology in the UK, can you help me with the school list
@@ThePublicHealthDr you have know Idea how it opened my eyes on public health training in UK , I cant thank you enough , keep on the good work and good luck in every step on your way .
Are certain rotations / placements location dependent ? Could you go into more detail on what is offered and where it is offered and how much places per applicant.
Hi, thanks so much for the feedback! So there is no qualification exam to get onto public health specialist training but as a trainee, you need to complete the DFPH and MFPH exams before the end of training
Thank you for the video and I am searching for its second part as u mentioned but I wanted to ask if FYs are mandatory? As I am midcareer in PH, MBBs MPH(UK). Can it be simply PLAB if no FYs?
Hi thanks for your video! It was extremely helpful. I was wondering what the rules are around taking breaks in the training. If you had to leave temporarily for caring responsibilities or maternity leave for example, would I have to leave the course and potentially restart it, or could I continue where I left off ? Thanks!
Hi Verity! I am glad the video was helpful! Like with all medical training, you can take time off for maternity leave and/or other reasons if approved by your deanery (out of programme training) - the GMC has a lot of information on this www.gmc-uk.org/education/standards-guidance-and-curricula/guidance/out-of-programme
Hi, thanks for this video. As a doctor, do you need GMC registration to apply for this program or can you apply without GMC registration? Also, please can you share the link for the PH faculty website? Do PH trainees also run clinics like GPs and do PH trainees work at night/weekends? What about the salaries, are PH and GP salaries almost the same? Lastly, are you considered for the 4 year route if you have a MSc in PH( in view) from another country or is it only UK MPH that is considered? Thanks
Hi! I am an incoming FY2 doctor. What do you recommend a doctor at my level do to bolster my CV and strengthen my chances of getting into the public health program? Thanks!
This video is very helpful! I am aiming to apply for the next round! I am on a non-medical route and am currently in Germany. Do you have any idea if I am eligible to apply and if sponsorship is honoured for this type of training? I will be getting my MSc in PH soon and a Biomedical Scientist
hi. Thanks for the very informative video. I am a GMC registered doctor. I have completed one year of internship (FY1) in India. The first job I got in NHS is a F1 LAS. Can I still apply for speciality training in Public Health after completing one year of this job in NHS?
Hi ! Thanks very much for the feedback I believe you need to complete both F1 and F2 to apply for public health training (2 years post grad training) but this link may help medical.hee.nhs.uk/medical-training-recruitment/person-specifications/public-health-st1
I’m a band 5 nurse from what I’ve read I need to get band 6 for 2 years . I intend to do a public health (health visiting) route to get my masters in public health from there would I be able to apply to the 4 year programme?
Thank you so much, this was so helpful I’m currently studying for my bachelors nutrition and public health, and was thinking of going into public health consultancy in the future, I was wondering do you get paid while on the training programme? Or did you work part-time alongside x
Hi Abbie, glad it is helpful :) The training programme essentially is you working and building up your public health knowledge and skills whilst being supervised - so you do get a salary
Hello! Thanks for the video :) I’m an F1 doctor, I’m interested in public health but I think I would like to have a ‘taster’ placement before I think about applying. Do you know if it possible to do short term placements after F2? I don’t have a public health job in my foundation years unfortunately! Thanks
Hey Mandy! I am glad this was helpful. I actually have a video coming this week about this topic exactly. If there is anything I don't cover in that video then pls feel free ask there and I am more than happy to answer
@@ThePublicHealthDr thank you for the prompt response. How does this work timing wise, is it a split week etc would be interesting to know the logistics of the MPH year
Thanks for your initiative on this useful video. Let me ask for your suggestion firstly! I am a doctor who finished bachelor studies in my country and MPH from LSHTM. I am thinking to apply non-medical scheme coz I don't want to use my time for foundation years in UK. Do you think it is suitable or not? And any further impact if I apply non-medic scheme? Thanks!
Thank you Eric, hmm I am not really in a position to advise on that as I went through the medical route but the faculty's website have a 'FAQ' page and also an email address for any queries so they may be able to help further. www.fph.org.uk/training-careers/specialty-training/

A good video idea is one on the competencies e.g what they are, what is expected , potential ideas of meeting them, challenges etc...
Thank you for your precious advice. I will start my MPH from Teesside University this September.
Best of luck!
This video is a saviour. I wish to be mentored to get into public health training in the UK. I am a medical doctor from Cameroon.
