I didn’t have an amazing undergrad GPA either and I know people who have gotten into Columbia MPH with less than a 3.0 so it is wayyyy more than possible! Hi I just came across you video and I love how you’ve covered all the aspects regarding the degree. I’m currently a physical therapy student and I wanted to know whether MPH is a good degree for physical therapy grads.
Thank you Taylor, this video really was super helpful! I am currently doing my BSc in bioinformatics, do you think I have a chance when applying for a MPH program? Public health kinda became my passion and now I found a course abroad that offers the chance of specializing in epidemiology while doing a MSc in PH. Can I even apply with a degree in bioinformatics? Sending love from Germany x
Definitely! MPH students come from a multitude of different backgrounds! In my program, we even had a student who was previously an aerospace engineer so anything is possible as long as you show a passion for public health 😊
I am the same. I'm currently in my BSc in bioinformatics in Germany and discovered my love for public health. My goal is to do my masters abroad in Canada at the moment.
I'm still in high school (and by the way I'm Australian so some things are a little different) but I was wondering what bachelor degree you completed? I'm personally looking into a bachelor of health science.
Hey, I am from Australia as well (Melbourne) If you are interested you can actually go straight into a Bachelor of Public Health and Health Promotion course, most universities offer that in Victoria and I have seen similar courses in South Australia as well, not entirely sure about other states. I also recommend you to look into the possibilities of doing a double-degree combined with either business or even nursing - it opens up a wide range of possibilities in the future! Good Luck:)
Hi Jordan! I got actually got two undergrad degrees: a Bachelor of Health Science and a Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences. It sounds like Sharon left some great (more specific) advice on undergrad majors in Australia, so I’ll refer you to her comment (:
Sharon Ruth Hii sahron I am from India and I hv done my GNM in 2018 and now I am working in hospital as a nurse plz guide me if want to come in Australia can I apply for Bachelor in public health is it better me for future or not
@@khairakaur3509 Hey, I am not entirely sure about the criteria for you as you will be coming as an international student; you might need to talk to your embassy or contact a relevant university for further information. Since you have completed GNM, it might be worth looking into doing a masters or at least try to get some credit points for your previous studies when applying to study in Australia. There are currently many universities that offer a bachelor's or honors program in Public Health as well as many alternative pathways. In terms of your future and career opportunities, it depends on your Visa Criteria and where you might wanna work in the future as it is harder to get a job in a government organization/ agency if you are not an Australian Citizen which can drastically reduce your chance or put pressure to get a job; but always keep in mind that current laws can change literally anytime and there is always an alternative pathway if you really want to pursue it. From my experience, I thoroughly enjoy studying Public Health and Health Promotion and I recommend it to anyone to pursue it if you have the passion:) Good Luck!
Sharon Ruth Thnks a lot for rply ☺️I had already applied my offer letter for bachelor in public health for Australia in Melbourne city but i am discussing with u because I think u are a citizen u knw more about courses because some people's says me to take bachelor in nursing but i can't took this course because of my low bands score and now my agent refer me to take a bachelor in public health
Hi thank you for the video! I have a bachelors in health science and I’m deciding between PH or Healthcare administration. Im leaning toward PH because of my history of Pulmonary disease and how diseases can effect your health. I was in a nursing program but realized that it wasn’t for me or dental because overall oral health says a lot about your own health…but really don’t want to deal with mouths… between PH and HA, which would you recommend?
What would be the job title for someone who wants to create health programs for like a community, hospital, schools, etc,? I’m hoping to get my MPH but a very creative person so looking for more creative jobs. 💕
There are a lot of different titles this might fall under but program manager or something similar would likely get you into a similar role to what you described ☺️
Hi Hannah! So it may seem confusing because you can basically do anything health-related with an MPH the same way that you can do pretty much anything business-related with an MBA, and so on. Let me know if you have any specific questions that I may be able to answer to help make it more clear (:
Hey u talked about masters in health administration in your video so can you be a lil more specific about mha n i wanted to know if we can have combination of mph and mha like together.
Great question! So you would not want to do both an MPH and MHA because they can be quite similar (and in my opinion that would probably be a waste of time/money). I explain the difference between an MHA and an MPH in Health Policy & Management (HPM) this way: - an MHA is for people who want to do business and see healthcare as a way to do that - an MPH in HPM is for people who want to do healthcare/public health and see business as a way to do that I hope this makes sense and is helpful!
Helpful info".. Public health and Health informatics on same platform..? Since both includes in healthcare.. Is there any flexibility to work in one another..?
Hello, I am interested in the MPH program. But I've a Bachelors in Business Administration. So you think I'll be good fit? Would I have to take numerous prerequisites to get into ?
You would have to look at the individual schools' requirements for admission, but I don't think you would need to take any prereqs. Most programs do not have specific requirements like that and people from all different backgrounds/majors get accepted (:
While your time might be better spent getting a master’s degree in genetics or immunology instead of public health, if you are really determined to study public health, you can pursue any concentration. Epidemiology or biostatistics might be more applicable depending on your interests.
When you get your Masters in PH and want to work as a health educator in a community college does that require an additional certification? If so is that per course that you desire teaching ? Is this an option ?
Unfortunately I don't know very much about that path but I'm sure it is possible and would depend on the requirements of the employer (i.e., the community college).
I can't say for sure because I haven't done any research on it myself but an MPH is a masters level degree just like any other so I would assume that you could teach at community college with an MPH. I definitely know someone who was teaching at a college with her MPH (but she was simultaneously pursuing a DrPH). Unfortunately I can only give this anecdotal advice since I am not pursuing a career in teaching but I see no reason why you couldn't get a job teaching with an MPH (:
It’s not exactly necessary, but getting your CHES (Certified Health Education Specialist) credentials would probably be helpful. Or at least make you stand out more :). Many CEPH accredited schools push for this especially if you go the Health Promotion route in a MPH degree!
Honestly, whatever you are most interested in! In my program, there was a large variety of undergrad majors and backgrounds. You should choose what you will like because you will get better grades if you enjoy what you’re studying ☺️
I don’t know the statistical breakdown for sure. Mailman publishes these statistics publicly so you could try to look it up but I’m unsure if they have those specifics. I would imagine it’s usually academic settings though.
Hai, did you take bachelor of science in public health or bachelor of arts in public health? and what’s the major differences and is it hard to find university that applied BA of public health (or any rrecommendations)? Thank you so so much! goodluck w your studies!
Hi Steven! My undergrad degrees were actually in Biomedical Sciences and Health Sciences so I don't have a Bachelors in public health and can't really speak to the differences. Sorry I couldn't be of more help for this question but let me know if you have any other questions (:
Not at all! Most public health professionals work in the field without having medical degrees. You can see from the stats in this video that there are only a small percentage of students who continue on the further education.
Hi there, Your video is very helpful! I am too planning to apply for MPH in coming year so I would like to take some suggestion from you in regard to writing letter of intent, what all things need to be kept in mind, how I need to proceed and streamline my thoughts on the same. Please guide me I am very much interested to know about it.
Is it a good course to pursue after bachelor's of pharmacy? As I am pretty much interested in this course, but don't know if it would be beneficial for future aspects
I don’t know very much about pharm + mph but if you are passionate about it, you should go for it because it definitely doesn’t hurt career aspirations!
Hello! Im finishing up my bachelors degree but I wanna start looking into graduate school and do MPH and found an online program that I feel would be a perfect fit for me since I would want to work full time and take courses in tue evening but do you think an online degree in MPH would affect me getting a good job?
Hi! I want to work in management in a hospital for my career but idk if I should consider an MHA or MPH I know both include healthcare management tho :/
The US does have a few MSc PH programs (Harvard and Hopkins are of note) but it’s mostly MPH in my experience. The MPH is more practice based (and more recognized in the US) while the the MScPH is more theory based. Hope that’s helpful! 😊
Check out this video about the cost of Columbia’s MPH: ua-cam.com/video/OJospBmCb3s/v-deo.html Due to the time commitment of a master’s degree, it would be very difficult to study for USMLE Step 1 at the same time. US medical schools give students time off to dedicate all of their time to Step 1 studying. An MPH program would not give you the same level of dedicated study time.
So a student with nothing to flaunt on his CV apart from good step scores, what path would you suggest in order to match a residency program? Like how can I improve my cv?? I have no contacts in usa plus the whole education system of usa seems so alien to me
Choose the program with the best fit for your personality and academic goals! Go with somewhere where you like the people and the course list excites you!
Maam...i have done Bachelor's in Electronic engineering and after 6 years of graduation. I doesnt feel satisfied...i am very much interested in public health and its job responsibilities kicks me and i like to do masters in public health and want to starts working but ppl r says...i cannot go in this field and master in public health is not possible for Engineering Graduate. Is it so ? Plz help...plzzzz
Hi, for my undergrad degree i am studying public health science in Nigeria and I plan on furthering my education in USA, can I study public health for my masters
Hi! I am planning to get my master degree but still confused about which major i should take.. So i want to ask you something about Public Health. Is it possible for someone that graduated from Communication major (bachelor) to apply in Public Health?
Hi taylor.. i am from Nepal.. and i have completed my BPH.. and i am not sure what should i do in my masters.. after completing my BPH i realized I am not really into public health and wanted to know what are the other more technical faculties that i can apply at states.. or do you think MPH is different form BPH that i might like it afterwards.. i really need you opinion on this one.. thanks
Either could make sense depending on what you want to do! An MPH is for people who want to work in public health (and could use management and business as a way to do that). An MHA is for people who want to be in business/management roles and see healthcare as a way to do that.
Nice video! What bachelor’s degree is necessary in in order to prepare for a masters degree in public health. (P.S my college does not have a B.A in public health)
You can have pretty much any undergrad degree! There is no required major for an MPH. Just double check that you have completed any course-specific prerequisites.
This video gives some great examples of careers you can do with a public health degree. Short answer, I would say, public health is anything that deals with the health or wellbeing of a population or community.
Hi Taylor, thanks for the information. Actually I have been studying online MPH for 9 months at USW. My question is (is online certificate differs from on campus?) and what are the differences between the two (if there is) ? Specifically, in terms of hiring jobs.
I think the answer to this question is much different now in 2020. Since the pandemic has forced most programs online, I can't imagine that employers would be able to look down on online programs but there is no way of knowing. Sorry I couldn't be of more help but my short answer is: online is probably fine!
Hi Sam! Once upon a time I was thinking about going to law school and I 100% agree with what Mikhael said. You can pretty much go to law school with any degree but something like public health would be a great choice if that's what you are interested in! I always tell people to choose what they are most passionate about because you will likely perform better if you like what you are doing (:
It is hard to say "how hard it was" because everyone is different but I can say that there are many people in my public health program that were not "stats nerds" who passed the class just fine. When a certain subject is not your strong suit, you have to find and use as many resources as possible to help you do your best!
Hi excellent video. Quite a good information on MPH. How could we combine different fields of interest. I’m basically from environmental science background but I ve interest in either addiction and mental health or nutrition n dietetics. Does occupational health and hygiene dept under MPH has good opportunities? Please do reply ... thank you 😊
It depends on the school but most schools will let you take electives in different departments or even get certificates from departments other than your “home” department.
I graduated with my bachelors healthcare administration degree. I’m having a hard time finding a job. I just don’t have enough management experience. I thought about getting my masters in MPH? Do you know if it’s hard to get a job in this field?
The MPH would overlap a lot with your healthcare admin degree and could be a good fit if you’re passionate about public health. You should also look into Master of Healthcare Admin (MHA) programs if that’s more aligned with your interests. Don’t get too discouraged! Job hunting is difficult and stressful right now
While some businesses are on hiring freezes right now because of COVID, they are expected to pick up hiring again with more funding and more positions soon! I also don't know too much about the job market for Bachelor-level public health grads, but if you're finding that most positions want further education, you may consider looking into an MPH program in order to more easily find a job in your niche. I hope that's helpful!
You can't touch patients and give clinical care unless you have another degree allowing you to do that (e.g., MD, DO, BSN/RN, Social Work, etc.) But you can work in clinical settings, you just won't be the one treating patients unless you have a clinical degree.
hi I am a medical graduate with a long career break for 15 years. I am planning to get back to a job where I can use my medical knowledge. I am considering public health. will there be any problem when I seek jobs after the completion of masters due to the career gap. thank you
As long as you have a way to explain the gap, it should be fine. Also once you’re in your MPH program, they will likely have a career services office that can advise you further!
At Columbia’s Mailman School of Public Health, the Master’s degree in Public Health (MPH) is 2 years long. You can apply to do an accelerated 1-year program if you have significant career experience or another high level degree but otherwise, the MPH is 2 years. The 2 year program includes a certificate which is similar to a “minor” in college. My certificate was in Comparative Effectiveness & Outcomes Research but it was a part of my MPH, it was not a desperate degree nor could I have done the certificate without doing the MPH. I hope this helps!
Can I ask you an urgent question? Which university is better in terms of employment after graduation, NYU epi or WASHU epi/bio? And which would you go for ?
For sure! Once you have your MPH, your undergrad degree serves to give you a little more insight into other areas (i.e., you can spin it to be a strength for job apps) but I don't think it would exclude you from working where you want to!
You can pursue a master’s in public health with any undergraduate degree as long as you can display a passion and interest in public health in your application!
Iam graduated in botany, can i take Msc in public health... Is this course is only beneficial for medical professionals or it provides equal opportunity to everyone who had taken MPH
Hey Taylor, Ihave completed my Bsc in Food nutrition and microbiology.and now Iam interested to do my public health major in US . Am I eligible for this? If so, after graduation what was the scope? Hope you'll help me with this.
Hello, I’m a dentist and I would like to pursue my MPH from US, being an international student will I find it difficult fr getting new job opportunities in the sector. Btw the video was supercool, informative. :)
I'm glad you found the video helpful! Since I am not an international student, I don't know for sure. I do know that the friends I had at Mailman who were international students are staying in NYC after graduating so I believe they found jobs here in the US. I'm sorry I couldn't be more helpful for this question!
Hello I have a bachelors in Physiotherapy from india and I’m planning for a mph in Canada. Do you think it’s good considering my background? And how rough is the course? Thanks in advance
Hi 🙋🏾♀️ I’m currently an MBBS student in my final year and I am considering getting an MPH. I am not planning to get my license after graduating as I want a different path. Is there a benefit to having my doctors license in addition to an MPH ?
As far as I know, the main advantage would be if you wanted to practice. So if you don’t want to practice, it might not be worth it but try to reach out to people in public health programs with MBBS degrees and ask what they think!
It really depends on the hospital, your geographic area, and a bunch of other factors but I would not do an entire degree just because you think it’ll help you find a job, you should also be interested in the topic!
You can get a MPH with almost any undergrad major as long as you can show in your application why you want to pursue public health. You just have to show a passion for whatever you’re applying for! People change careers and directions all the time.
Not annoying at all 💕 and MPH programs take people from a huge variety of backgrounds! Your undergrad degree or previous jobs don’t really matter as long as you can show you’re passionate for the field
Columbia! Feel free to check out my vlogs from my time in the program, they are all compiled here: ua-cam.com/play/PL83qAgfKI-NWNB8-qyuBCDN10wX4ASk4U.html

I still feel confused on what people with MPH actually do
Hi Hannah! So it may seem confusing because you can basically do anything health-related with an MPH the same way that you can do pretty much anything business-related with an MBA, and so on. Let me know if you have any specific questions that I may be able to answer to help make it more clear (:
@@MomentsInMed what jobs exactly do people do with an mph
lol
Hey u talked about masters in health administration in your video so can you be a lil more specific about mha n i wanted to know if we can have combination of mph and mha like together.
Great question! So you would not want to do both an MPH and MHA because they can be quite similar (and in my opinion that would probably be a waste of time/money). I explain the difference between an MHA and an MPH in Health Policy & Management (HPM) this way:
- an MHA is for people who want to do business and see healthcare as a way to do that
- an MPH in HPM is for people who want to do healthcare/public health and see business as a way to do that
I hope this makes sense and is helpful!
Could you help me by telling me what concentration of public health is better if I want to work or aply the mph in lab work, genetics, inmunology etc?
While your time might be better spent getting a master’s degree in genetics or immunology instead of public health, if you are really determined to study public health, you can pursue any concentration. Epidemiology or biostatistics might be more applicable depending on your interests.
:D
Hi, may I know what is the difference between a Master of Science in Public Health and a Master in Public Health?
An MSPH is more academic while the MPH is more practice-based. Also in my experience, the MSPH is a newer degree and is sometimes less recognizable.
Moments In Med but teaching is an option ?
Many CEPH accredited schools push for this especially if you go the Health Promotion route in a MPH degree!
what is the most common (or best) undergraduate major if I plan to major in Health Policy (analysis) as my master concentration? Thank you!
Honestly, whatever you are most interested in! In my program, there was a large variety of undergrad majors and backgrounds. You should choose what you will like because you will get better grades if you enjoy what you’re studying ☺️
For the people who are doing research, who typically hires researchers? Private or public institutions?
Bachelor of arts is more on theory side while bachelors of science is more on technical side.
Do you have to get a medical Degree to find good work?
I am a chemistry graduate, should I go for MPH?
Hello! Im finishing up my bachelors degree but I wanna start looking into graduate school and do MPH and found an online program that I feel would be a perfect fit for me since I would want to work full time and take courses in tue evening but do you think an online degree in MPH would affect me getting a good job?
Probably not in this era! Most things are online now, regardless
Hi! I want to work in management in a hospital for my career but idk if I should consider an MHA or MPH I know both include healthcare management tho :/
MHA = business degree using health
MPH = health degree using business
It depends on where your priorities are, business or public health!
hmm
I’m really interested in mph but i saw some UA-camrs say it’s a useless degree because you won’t be able to find a good paying job.
This is great! Thank you. Is there MSc Public Health in the States (or only MPH)?
The US does have a few MSc PH programs (Harvard and Hopkins are of note) but it’s mostly MPH in my experience. The MPH is more practice based (and more recognized in the US) while the the MScPH is more theory based. Hope that’s helpful! 😊
Cost of studying mph in your college? And is it practical to prepare and give usmle steps while pursuing mph?
Check out this video about the cost of Columbia’s MPH: ua-cam.com/video/OJospBmCb3s/v-deo.html
Due to the time commitment of a master’s degree, it would be very difficult to study for USMLE Step 1 at the same time.
I have no contacts in usa plus the whole education system of usa seems so alien to me
salamalik
Is it possible to study MPH while doing residency program?
If you find a residency program that specifically has a gap year built in for competition of an MPH

Hi, what does the term Public Health Practitioner mean? Does it refer to licensed doctors with a MPH?
Thanks xx
A public health practitioner is simply someone “practicing” or doing the work of public health (not necessarily a physician but could be)
Any chances into MPH with legal/humanity background?
You can get into an MPH program with any background as long as you have a passion for public health!

Yes! For sure!
Hi! I am planning to get my master degree but still confused about which major i should take.. So i want to ask you something about Public Health. Is it possible for someone that graduated from Communication major (bachelor) to apply in Public Health?

Unfortunately I don’t know very much about BPH degree programs from outside the US so it’s hard for me to speak on this
Hii, i am from india, and i want to know as a nursing background which is better for me MPH or MHA?
Either could make sense depending on what you want to do! An MPH is for people who want to work in public health (and could use management and business as a way to do that). An MHA is for people who want to be in business/management roles and see healthcare as a way to do that.
Nice video! What bachelor’s degree is necessary in in order to prepare for a masters degree in public health. (P.S my college does not have a B.A in public health)
You can have pretty much any undergrad degree! There is no required major for an MPH. Just double check that you have completed any course-specific prerequisites.
Hi what is public health
Sorry I couldn't be of more help but my short answer is: online is probably fine!

can you go into law with an undergrad degree in public health?
How hard was ur statistics class? I’m barely survived my community college under grad statistics class.
It is hard to say "how hard it was" because everyone is different but I can say that there are many people in my public health program that were not "stats nerds" who passed the class just fine. When a certain subject is not your strong suit, you have to find and use as many resources as possible to help you do your best!
@@MomentsInMed thank you so much for the reply !!:)

@@MomentsInMed thank you 😊
I graduated with my bachelors healthcare administration degree.

I'm a rising senior majoring in Public Health. I'm struggling to find an entry level job. Any ideas? I can't find my niche /sector.

Hi! Are all the job kind of office/ resarch oriented? Or can you have more of a clinical job? hands on patients or populations?

Is MPH (2 year) and MPH: comparative effeciveness research (1 year) same or different ? What should i choose ? Please guide me
At Columbia’s Mailman School of Public Health, the Master’s degree in Public Health (MPH) is 2 years long.

As far as I know, the main advantage would be if you wanted to practice. So if you don’t want to practice, it might not be worth it but try to reach out to people in public health programs with MBBS degrees and ask what they think!
