I'm 16 and I see kids of 10-12 age swimming faster than me and it kind of demotivates me sometimes but after this video I really feel confident. Thankyou so much, Cody.😊
This video has just given me more motivation towards my future I’m always nervous when I hear about people that have been swimming there whole life vs me who has been swimming since high school . Thank you Cody
Rowdy Gaines didn't start swimming until he was 16-years-old and, hold onto your hats, TWO YEARS LATER he is winning two gold medals and a silver medal at the 1978 World Championships! AMAZING!
I must say, this is a very inspirational video Cody. This makes lots of younger swimmers such as myself feel better about ourselves with our PBs and times.
I really appreciate this video. I started swimming this year (freshman year) when I was 14, just turned 15 this Sunday. People think it was ridiculous for me to set my sights on swimming being anymore than a hobby. I never walked around yelling I was going to be an olympic swimmer, but I was trying to push myself in the direction of swimming for a college. I fell in love with swimming (stopped Latin-American dancing that was like 8 years of my life to make swimming full time) when it comes to ability, I just finished my first season which was on preteam. I'm going into Gold starting this March, and once my sophomore year comes along I'm heading into Platinum. My coaches see my potential and are doing everything to prepare me to move up. And even though Im happy for moving up so quickly (and am fully aware that it wouldn't be possible to go faster while it still being healthy), it sometimes doesn't feel like enough. The thoughts of starting too late and never being able to compare to kids my age are constantly in my mind. But when I saw this video, it gave me hope and brand new motivation. Thank you for that
True! I started to train seriously at 25 when I was allowed to compete in Masters events. And by the age of 30 I dropped more than 7 seconds on my 100 free LCM compared to my results at 15 when I had no idea what I was doing in the pool. 30+ now, working out 6 days per week and still improving.
Cody your videos are AWESOME!!!!!! They really help me throughout the day, And you also talk about whatever I am going through and builds confidence in myself
When you said it doesn’t really matter what age you start it gave me a lot of hope because swimming is my passion but I can’t really do it year around I tried for a couple years and I was improving, going to meets, all that. But my parents kept pulling me out because of the cold season and we trained at a outdoor pool, and I’m sensitive to cold. (It was hearted though) and I haven’t been in a pool in over a year which I’m really sad about and I don’t have access to one. The good thing is I’m going to high school next year, and that was where I used to train. I plan on joining the swim team and getting back in my game. I was worried that I would not be able to cause I see all these swimmers all start at like 8 or 9 or something. Now I realize I can do it, thank you so much for making me believe in myself again
I’ll be 24 finishing university next month and I’m trying to build a career in swimming. Was really inspired when you were saying people start at all ages etc etc, but then you were talking about 16 year olds being late. Don’t know whether being from a less prestigious swimming country(Ireland) will help or make it harder, but I’m still gonna give it a go. I’d rather try and fail miserably than get a normal job.
hey cody.....its nice to see an olympian vlog,....keeping aside all formalities... I request you to make a video on the different types of exercises you do to keep yourself in that position and the intensities respectively.... I know you dont make videos on the exercises ,but still I have a request
I'm a huge fan, subbed since day one and have been following you since 2015 and the road to Rio! Pleeease put more caps up on poshmark! You're a huge inspiration to me as a swimmer and I'm dying to get one!
Thanks I really needed this :) Started swimming last year when I was 14. I was very slow but I am getting a lot faster and I can keep up with the people swimming for many years. I definitely need to improve my times, I am still slow, but I know I can. This video gave me a lot of hope so thank you for that.
Man, these vlogs are so inspiring! I started swimming my freshman year of high school, I was about 15. I liked it so much I had to join a club team. I quit playing baseball because it just wasn't fun anymore. I remember watching swimming growing up and being inspired by the swimmers and I even wanted to be an Olympian because that was so cool! Watching people like Nathan Adrian, Michael Phelps, and Lezak (who I have met, nice guy) was so inspiring! Now I'm 17 and I'm decent and of course it'd be cool to be an Olympian one day, but I just really want to swim for a fast school like Queen's University. I just need to get faster. I only got one more year of high school.
I feel so behind because I only learned how to swim last year, I’ve only been like swimming on the highschool team for 2 months. I’m not very speedy (literally today I swam a 1:52:08 100fr ) but I’m only 14 , I have so much time to improve.
@@Nick-qc7wm not terrible, at the end of last season I swam a 1:19.66 100 fr and a 1:27.69 100 fly . I’m only 2 weeks in to my junior season so I have the rest of this season and my entire senior season to improve.
Thanks for the advice Cody! I have started swimming when I was 15 and just threw myself onto the highschool swim team. I was 1:24 for my 100 breast at our first race. Before Covid started I got it down to 1:13! Now im opening my sophmore year and Ive became more serious than ever. I am very excited and motivated by you to push myself in practice and get new best times. With such little time left, what do you recommend I do to increase my chances to get into a colleges swimteam (I am hoping for the Florida Gators). Thanks :)
Hey man!! How are you doing now? I’m a sophomore in HS right now and I’m just now starting to swim! I really hope to get a time like 1:13 in breast that would be awesome
@@Nick-qc7wm Glad to hear you're starting out. At the end of my junior year I got it down to a 1:03 and I'm about to have my first in-season meet in almost a year. Hoping to crush that time and potentially make state.
I started at 8, swam all year round since then. Got hurt when I was 13, couldn’t do it for about a year because I was in physical therapy. Now I’m 14 swimming doubles in hs and my injury taught me to never take swimming for granted. Some things I still can’t do, which is upsetting but I’m happy to be in the pool. Honestly it’s a bit of motivation to push through all the super tough practices
You sound so much like my dad because he always says this! He we will say “Nobody matters how good you are when your 12!“ And now I’ll always think of you the next time he says it😂
What should I do if I work so hard at practice and go home and work out even more, but am still a very slow breaststroker??? It is so frustrating. I have to work so much harder than everyone else just to improve in the slightest way...
You see, im a pretty young swimmer with decent times. Thing is, my knees and elbows are the problem. My coach says my stroke in freestyle is doing something to my tendons in my arms (basically spraining them) so i have to change my stroke. It's diffcult, going from pulling with only my hands to pulling with my entire arm. Any advice to help change my stroke?
I started swimming 2 years ago (10 years) and it’s been 7 months since I’ve swam and I’m so excited to be going back to morning practice on Saturday 😊😊😊 I wanna be just like you when I’m older
I started at 7 year old. And only managed to reach the finals of my country once and reach top 32 in my country. Man I feel bad when I hear that some people trained only 2 years but got to the Olympics. ( dont get me wrong it's amazing, and I'm SUPER happy for them, but I can't stop thinking that all I did was a waste or that I never really trained hard where in fact I'm killing my self) now I'm 16, I took a break last year because of school (our educational system DO NOT help people who do sports at a competitive level) and I'm trying to get my old level back and get stronger.
I really needed to see this video due to the fact that I'm the same way I've only been swimming for 2 years starting my 3rd so this video helps out a lot
he is "ALSO" a phenomenal american swimmer. that's a big talk from someone good at only the slowest stroke and who has never won an individual gold medal.
Thank you for making this video! I’m a sophomore and I’m wanting to join my schools swim team and I was feeling discouraged. But this video really helped! Thank you I’m going to join and try my best on the team.
Greetings from the Philippines! Fellow World University games athlete here! Sadly not in Kazan but just last year in Taipei. Have you ever been injured? I'm asking this because I just injured my shoulder (rotator cuff) it's torn and it keeps me from performing good in training and in competition even after therapy sessions. Surgery would mean a year off for me to recover. What should I do?
This was very inspirational because I started swimming when I was 8 ( I’m 11 now) and I’m not really the best a lot of people are better then me and sometimes it really hard like if you are in the same situation

No way 😮 that's some amazing stuff.
Honestly bullshit in my opinion. So many people work many more years and never get close to where he was.
Chris Tylka bro our pool is named after him because he was winter haven born and raised. This kind of motivates me
I think of his story every once in a while and I just shake my head and ask how every single time
the sport also had a lot more shallow of a talent pool back then, people on average started later, trained less etc
Watching you grow with these since day one has been sick man!!

I went to IU too! Do you still go to classes? Do all swimmers on the team have to be a student, how does that work?
Love the videos Cody!!!
Could you do a video about how you roll out?
