If you are on a budget and dint mind the noise of a hammer you can get a anywhere hole punch popular with scrapbookers for punching holes for eyelets with the same bits. You get a nice clean hole through thick materials for a few bucks. You need to hit it with a hammer so there is noise but that the only downside. The crop a dial punches are great too but more expensive. Great explanation of the screw punch. I didn't know the difference in quality.

I have a Nonaka screw punch and it is one of my best bookbinding tool investments! It was pretty expensive when I bought it but it has proven its worth time and time again. I actually got it after watching one of your video's many years ago :)

I did a lot of research and bought the original screw punch from Talas. I felt confident I was not getting a knock off. Love this tool and use all the time. I have a 1mm, 1.5mm and 2mm drill bits. The 1mm is my workhorse and use it instead of an awl for my small booklets. Not cheap but you get what you pay for.

I am a 30 year Japan resident and I have never seen this screw punch. I have seen far more awls in use however. I suppose it is one of those niche specialised products that only true craftsmen and artisans will know about. The price is also perhaps difficult for your average office clerk to justify and that is probably why I haven't seen one in use and in the very analog and paper intensive Japanese bureaucratic system (finally this is slowly starting to change), there should have been ample opportunities to have spotted one! They look to be very useful, if only for opening a new hole in a leather belt!
Interesting! I've never been to Japan, but for some reason I imagined there would be screw punches available in all the shops 😄

I just bought this last week and it arrived yesterday. I looked up your tutorial because I needed to know how to change the blade size. I then tried using it, and realised I might have bought a knock off, it’s so hard to use!

I’ve got a cheap plastic one from a hobby shop (the spare drill bits are stored inside the handle which is nice and stops me losing them!). It has been good so far, but I’ve only used it a few times. Although I like it, I can tell that if I was using it a lot, I’d probably soon want to upgrade.

I'd love to have one of these but the current financial constraints mean even the cheap imitations are beyond my budget. I have beenlooking at the prices in the UK and Hewit's have it at £43.20 incl VAT while CXD International have it at £51.56 plus VAT. Both come with a single 3mm bit. When you compare the cheap ripoffs available the difference in prices can only really be accounted for if the quality of the tool is far lower and therefore going to wear out/break much sooner. It really would be a false economy to go for a cheap one in my opinion.

I’ve bought a cheap version from Amazon because i couldn’t afford the Nonaka one - waste of money, glad i was able to send it back. Came rusted, and falling apart.
Eventually I got one from Vaessen Creative, which is plastic, but works really really well and come with 3 bit sizes and a little holding place on top. It was about 15€ too, so a lot more affordable. Good alternative if you can’t find or afford the Nonaka, screw punches make a big difference for my projects

Living in Japan, never heard of that! I’m gonna look for it.
To buy japanese tools, paper etc. is always a win, because in Japan quality has high priority as it is important there to fit customers needs.
Those screw-punches have a great advantage, because you can punch a hole even in places a regular punch won't reach.
I've got one from Amazon with 3 inserts and it works great.
It's like the cars ... the Corolla is the most durable vehicle in the world.

I have a Japanese (I suppose) screw punch that I bought years and years ago. The instructions are in Japanese and it says Made in Japan on the instructions, but it does not say made in Japan on the tool itself. When I first bought it, it worked pretty good for what I was using it for which was to punch holes for eyelets on cards. I have not used it in ages and it seems a little (whole lot) stiff now and barely goes down at all. So, I guess my question is, are there knock offs that are also made in Japan? If it does not say made in Japan on the tool itself is it safe to assume it is a knock off? Loving your videos and getting reacquainted with book making.

Miss Jennifer, what's the thickest depth your screw punch can be used for/on? Thank you VERY much for this informative little video complete with the caveat emptor! ❤️
The board I punched in the video (with apple paper) was 3mm thick and it punched through that. I'm not sure what the thickest depth is, but keep in mind the bits get wider/taper beyond the tip. So the punched side of your project might have a larger hole than the other side, if that makes sense. If the project is 3mm thick or more, I've also punched a hole on both sides (meeting in the middle) to cut all the way through. Hope that helps!

this tool is very awesome! i tried using puncher, but turns out it wont cut through cloth even though it cut through thick boards, maybe its sth about cloth, like its more flexible? does this nonaka can be used to punch holes on clothes too? will appreciate for any other tips that can help me punch holes neatly into clothes >< thanks a lot!

These are seriously pricey but I think they are worth the invesment, particularly for bookbinding projects in the long run. May I ask what size blades you own and would recommend for stab binding and sketchbook cover punching?

@@KatieCottingham I watched and unless I got it wrong, she showed using the 3mm punch while mentioning she has the 1mm and 2mm, but I was thinking, perhaps a smaller bit would do for some booklets? Trying to minimize the number of bits to buy, so I kind of have the same question. If one wanted to make just smaller booklets, would the 1mm serve in place of all three?

I bought one yeaarrsss ago but I guess it was a knockoff cause it was really bad so I didn't use it anymore. I wish I knew back then cause I could've used it back then.
I wish I was more aware of knockoffs back then too! Years ago, I thought the company who imported the punch was the maker and it was confusing. The company I bought the Nonaka one from in 2012 (Aitoh) ended up making their own knockoff years later-and that's the cheap one I tested in this video.

What size bit do you use for the string in stab bindings?
I have a punch where you need to physically tap it with a hammer or mallet. Works the same and a lot cheaper 😭
is the tool like a leather hole punch?

I ordered one. It wasn't good. The paper wouldn't pass down to the chamber. It all got stuck in the nozzle.
Awl vs screw punch is the book making version of an actual piercing needle bs a piercing gun
