  • American Horror Story is a bit messy when the camera isn’t rolling, and it’s really not all rainbows and unicorns on the set. One of the first departures from American Horror Story was made by Jessica Lange, but who are the others? Stay tuned and subscribe to Bopping for more videos.

I’m currently rewatching hotel and really loving it but that’s probably because it’s the first of the older seasons I’ve seen in awhile after the disappointment of the last few. So many male actors do look the same though😭 I keep thinking they’re all Darren Criss and needing to remind myself they killed his bit character off already.
It’s also hilarious because they make an off handed joke about Kim K in it and I’m like you all have cast her in the new season, is this really what we’ve come to🥲
On a more positive, it reminds me that I’d really love to see Lady Gaga given a similar role in another narrative and allowed to just really run with the part, I think it could be excellent.

Jessica Lange was one the show's main pillars. No Lange, no Bates, no Paulson, no go for me. I'm pretty sure Lange got sick and tired of playing the same character over and over again; bitchy antagonist with a cigarette in one hand and a drink in the other. She has so much more range than that. That's not how you treat a two-time Oscar winner. She got out because she knew the show was going downhill. I believe AHS is responsible for taking Hagsploitation to a whole new level. AHS also became too formulaic and I think, in general, Ryan Murphy's personal prejudices and biases come out in blazing glory in his shows.

Double Feature, on the other hand, had a promising start with the first episodes but instead of building upon that foundation, they ended it super hastily to make time for the second half which was just awful. I remember when the first season came out it was considered so groundbreaking! My mom and I would tune in every Wednesday lol. I think part of it's "downfall" is 1. losing beloved actors 2. Running out of ideas 3. High expectations from its viewers 4. Length of series. Some of the seasons people seem to hate I actually loved and vice versa, but sometimes even seasons with a promising start would fizzle out because you can only stretch out so much plot so it either starts to dull out or more random crap gets added to fill in the gaps that doesn't even make sense. I will continue to follow the series, but I know that it sometimes leaves something to be desired.

A big problem is so many fans openly state they know it's getting terrible, but they'll still watch it anyway. With that knowledge, the people behind the show know they really don't have to try. I don't know for certain what it might be, but, Jessica Lange was definitely most of the glue that held that show together & all of my friends' interests. I wanted more Dylan McDermott, too, & 1984 seemed like a mocking rip off of Friday the 13th, & those other horror films of my youth.
It seems to me that Ryan hires more & more cast members, (& many of them new faces to add onto the list)because they're also gay, or bi, or trans,& not by talent, or acting merit. Like I said, I don't know for certain, but, many of my own LGBT friends even think that.

Completely agree with this. I really enjoyed Red Tide up until the final episode. It was a different take on vampires than they did back in Hotel and they seemed to be going for 'back to basics' type approach that drew from what worked well in earlier seasons. If they had just given it the time to wrap it up properly we could have gotten a great' season.
Heck I even think even 'Death Valley' could have been a solid season if they had given it a full season rather than 4 episodes. The conspiracy theory stuff was fun and I liked how it all tied in to famous mysteries. With a better and longer modern day storyline that wrapped things up properly it could have been a perfectly fine season.

Personally, I am a HUGE fan of series 3. Coven remains my favourite of all seasons to this day. The actors are well cast, the characters are well developed and MOST of its plot is sound. Also, it's a relatively short season compared to some others. It doesn't drag on and concludes nicely.
Apocalypse, although weaker, was a nice follow up to it, but I wish it had taken the cohesiveness of Coven and used that as its base.
What puzzles me though, is that if they could create a follow up season to Coven, why can't they do something similar to the others?
otoh, I do love how some seasons seem to be connected by little things. THAT is what makes AHS so exciting, seeing those references or bringing in a character from a different season's timespan. I must admit I have not really been able to watch the later seasons after Apocalypse. So I can't judge on them.
The major gripes most of us have with the series? The looseness of plotlines, the chaotic writing within them and the lack of strong leads seem to be the main points I see making. Plotlines within AHS have been an issue since season 2. I don't think there has ever been a season where a MAJOR plotline is taken from episode 1 full on to the final episode. They always seem to fall short a few episodes before the end. THAT is due to bad or chaotic writing. It can be solved by either squeezing out every ounce of interest into the entire season, or shorten the season in episodes so the MAJOR plotline can run full course and not leave us wanting. Ultimately, it will improve the quality of the show.
A major strong point of AHS has always been its firm cast. The same actors playing different characters over different seasons. THAT is also AHS' main weakness, since actors don't always lend themselves to such extensive jobs. IMHO, the solution is to keep actors on for say, at least 2 or 3 seasons and then roulate with other actors doing the exact same thing. Instead of having actors getting tired or disgruntled with playing heavy roles for an extensive period of time, they have a set timespan ánd get to enjoy some freedom from the darkness for a while before coming back. In turn it also allows more creativity and diversity throughout the seasons since every actor brings something different to the table.
However, during any season span there should be at least 1 or 2 MAJOR LEADS. Male or female IDC, though I have to admit the female leads have been exemplary sofar. Jessica Lange, Angela Bassett, Sarah Paulson, Lily Rabe, Evan Peters, Dennis O'Hare etc.... iconic actors and iconic portrayals.
The show desperately needs a steady set of TRUE actors to be the backbone of every storyline, while having throw away roles / sidekick roles for non-actors or wannabe hangers on in the show. I mean, let's face it, SOMEONE has to die at SOME point.

    1. 1984 was an excellent season. It was a perfect play on that genre of movies in that time period and the storyline with a more sexually played on then how it was back then. I loved it.
    2. I liked double feature, but only the first half of it because it was an interesting take on a vampire story and I’m a sucker for vampire stories. The second half was like a really bad episode of The X-Files. Like it was an episode that was written, but never approved to go through and somebody found the script and used it for American horror story.
    3. Sarah Paulson will never ever be not welcome by the fans, and we will always want to see her in American horror story in someway, shape or form.
    4. Gabby yes queen you need to direct an episode because you understand the genre because of how much you’ve been a part of it and I would love to see you Direct and episode or even a couple.
    5. NYC was a story that needed to be told because it was a part of our history and it’s always pieces of that type of history that always gets overlooked and they were able to do something with it. I will admit I had a hard time watching the season, but I appreciate the story and I’m glad that it was told.
    6. And I find it interesting that Evan Peter says that American horror story took a toll on him mentally, but yet he went along and did Dahmer. That mini series in itself was probably more of a mental fuck then the American horror story seasons, he was a part of.
    7. Now I wouldn’t be mad if they made more American horror stories episodes as opposed to an entire season. Because I did like a lot of those stories, and I also liked how they utilized murder house more in some of those episodes.

Here's a secret: Ryan's shows are only GOOD if they're his "favored" thing to work on. For example, POSE was amazing in Season 1, but Season 2 began to make crazy choices as 2018/2019 was when Ryan was trying to juggle 9-1-1, American Horror Story: Apocalypse and American Horror Story: 1984.
American Horror Story had reached top profitability in 2014/2015. Right after Freak Show and before Hotel. Ryan at the time was juggling SCREAM QUEENS: Season 1, American Crime Story: Season 1, and trying to begin FEUD. Jessica probably saw that Ryan was a man who had way too many toys and not enough time to play with them. And then Evan saw. And then Sarah saw. And Lily Saw.
Now AHS isn't a show you want to stay multiple seasons on, unless you're connected to Coven or Murder House. 1984 squandered potential. Double Feature was rushed and terrible. And NYC was just "The Normal Heart" mixed with "Angels in America" with Spirit Halloween decorations glued on.

The process really only started failing me in season 10 (double feature). I went in blind with no knowledge of what the plot was (as I always do). I was so excited the entire duration of episode 7 cause I thought it was going to ultimately tie into the first half of the season.
After episode 7 finished and I googled the season. I realized that double feature basically means two stories. I was intensely disappointed because that first half ended so abruptly. it definitely felt to me like the characters had been gloriously set up for some incredible reveal, but, no, it just..ended...at the height of the story.
Though I will admit, I didn't hate season 10 at all. Both stories were interesting, they didn't seem fleshed out and finished, but they were definitely interesting.
Season 11 on the other hand... Season 11 might be one for the critics and deep thinkers who find layers in everything but it was not my cup of tea. Upon learning what the big reveal was, I did wish id stuck it out just so I could've had that satisfying aha moment. However, In hindsight, I couldn't have done it. As far as my personal preferences go, I gave them a lot of stick with those first 3 episodes, and it did not deliver for me.
    Still a die-hard fan though.

I loved all the seasons except season 11. I started but couldn't get past the first episode. It didn't even feel like AHS. But first 10 seasons I enjoyed it all except maybe cult.

They officially lost me at Roanoake, I was surprised as I had always found that story intriguing, but I just couldn't continue after the half way point. Hated Asylum.. took 2 attempts to get into Freak Show though it was decent in the end. Hotel and Murder House are easily my favourites in that order.

I enjoyed the first 4 seasons. After that lost interest.

Unbiased Opinion. Most seasons of AHS are solid, I personally didnt watch freakshow because it was too weird and I eat when I watch shows but aside from that its mostly average or very good.
Season 10 and 11 are just complete garbage. The UFO season was watchable and they could've done alot with it, season 11 I didnt even bother finishing. It's just about gay men getting killed by a serial killer, I'm assuming this is to bring some type of awareness but making a whole season about that is very boring. I watch shows to be entertained not to learn about politics, AHS specifically isnt set in the real world which is what makes it even more interesting.
Vampire season felt the same as the UFO season, there's so much they could do with it but it just felt shit. Writing was pretty bad too lol they ignore 10 red flags before moving into the house

1984 was far from the worst season. NYC, and Cult. Bottom 2. Followed by the split season. The rest of them were very good.

The genie of the whole franchise has ended after Asylum. Way before Jessica quit the show. Watch Murder house and Asylum again and after watch the rest. Huge differences in quality, its whole got just dramatically changed and yeah there were good seasons as well but ever since Cult it changed a lot.

I only started watching AHS when the first episode of season 8 aired in Germany. I then decided to watch it and omg I fell in love with it. Season 1 - 3 are amazing, with 2 being my most favorite. I was so sad when Jessica Lange stopped to play roles and when I watched season 6, I noticed the downfall of the series. I absolutely hate season 7 and I only like season 8, because Jessica reappeared.

Before everyone bashed 1984, everyone bashed Roanoke, I really enjoyed both.

AHS Fall River / Lizzie Borden....do a Story about The Murders and somehow connect it to the Witches...maybe one of them is a Distant Relative of Lizzie...

I am no longer a fan, the last two seasons became too woke. The show was much more about wokeness, and not about a good story.
