That scene where Lance is telling Sheila about losing (for the nonce) his daughter. Then we see a shadow crossing her face and realize, omg, she has lost a child. The moment passes because Lance is too self-absorbed to notice her distress. It's a devastating and incredibly subtle piece of acting on Sophie's part.

But she has that line which cuts ya guts out. She says, “what you have going for you is she’s met you Lance, and you’re lovely.”

There is a moment in series 3 when Sheila is sitting on a tree branch and Terry is watching her from afar with a loving smile on his face. It was a fleeting moment you could almost have missed, but wonderful and deeply touching.

That's when he found a button on a beautiful summer's day and saw his wife smiling at him. You can see on his face, "this is as good as life gets". I hope to be as happy as that one day!

I also read that a false foreboding of something bad happening to Terry, wasn't there some sort of allusion to that in the script too?

that episode has several moments like that - when Varna makes that find, Becky and Toni and the wine, even when Lance and Phil find common ground around 1978, plus of course Becky and Andy winning the auction for the cottage. That episode oozes love and human connection. It may well be the best episode of any programme, ever. Who else watches it with tears of joy rolling down their cheeks?

Without a doubt, one of my favourite characters in The Detectorists. Sophie coveys such depth and richness to her role as Sheila. Season 2 when she is talking to Lance in the pub garden, we see her pain and feel the loss that she keeps hidden. Brilliant actress.

I've watched that episode several times, but that scene always hits me like a ton of bricks. It's brutal, but in the best way possible. So well written, so well acted, and so well directed. The fact Lance isn't even really paying attention to what she's saying. He's too self-absorbed to even notice what she's really talking about. It's so well done, and so true to life.

I can remember when we were first introduced to Sheila & Terry, and thinking to myself "Ah, there's grief here. Probably the loss of a child, maybe miscarriages or stillbirths". Sheila seems numb, and slightly distanced from reality; shell-shocked by her past trauma, but also by cocooning herself in a protective veil of manufactured happiness. Add to this their constant need to fill their time with dance classes, that "need to be doing", to blot out the grief. So when she has that moment in the pub garden, I cried hot tears on her behalf. Beautifully written. Wonderfully Acted.

Yes and she’s so patient! And into it just because Terry loves it. The time they do the stake out and the club asks him whether he’s coming and he states with clarity that Sheila is more important. Can’t remember the line but as an obsessive detectorist myself - it was terrific reminder

I love the character of Sheila but behind the facade there is real sadness, as Dauphinuk (below) explains. The adoration for Sheila by Terry is so touching- this is top quality writing from Mackenzie Crook and brilliant acting on the part of the cast. Sophie Thompson, you are such an accomplished actress but your insight into the theme of Detectorists- that beneath the surface we all have our troubles, our regrets, our losses- is spot on: thank you, and please keep making the lemonade.

I adore Sophie Thompson. She always brings so much to her characters (my favorite Miss Bates). Sheila is so special, and as many of you have already pointed out, OMG the picnic table scene. My husband always gets teary eyed at the last scene together, when Terry holds up the button and Sheila smiles and waves. Pure contentment. That we should all be lucky enough to experience this, in some form, in our lives.

I've always been a huge fan of Sophie Thompson's brilliant tragi-comic portrayal of Mary Elliot (Anne's snobbish hypochondriac sister) in the 1995 Persuasion movie (what a fabulous movie that is!) I am now keen to see 'The Detectorists' - it sounds terrific. I've been aware of its existence & cult status but until now, I never actually seen it.
