Hi friends! Update time! After about 6 months, the paint on my handles started to wear away! One of you lovely viewers gave me the idea to use towel racks for a cool modern handle upgrade! They look so cool, thought I would share the idea!
You did really good for an amateur but here's some tips from a pro painter: - There's a product called "Bulldog" which is an adhesion promoter. You can apply this stuff to any hard to paint surface like plastic, metal, rubber etc to help your paint better adhere. -After you applied the paint to your fridge and let it dry, you should've applied a gloss clear coat over your work to protect your paint job. Just like how you applied that gloss spray over your handles. - I suggest putting a chrome trim along the top and bottom edges of your doors to give it even more of a retro look. You can try Silver Washi tape, which sticks really well.
If you use bulldog, do you still need to sand it? I’m painting a brand new fridge and it has a smooth finish instead of the normal fridge rigid texture and I’m worried about ruining it. I really like the smooth enamel look.
This turned out great and you did and amazing job! I just think that I would've put a final coat of sealer/protector on after. It turned out awesome! Thank you so much for sharing! I love the color too, great choice! Cheers! 😘👍🏻💯🤗
Complete appreciate that you reported back a month later to give us an update. I love it when content creators do that. I’m so gonna do this to put handed down fridge
This is the first video of yours that I've seen and it's an instant follow from me. It's kind of giving Rachel Maksy DIY vibes but more informative. Looking forward to watching more!
I literally you-tube everything. Came across this one because I want to paint my white fridge black for a new addition in our new home. Honestly the editing, the information, and the overall layout was just top notch. I am one of those people that never subscribes, and never comments. This is VERY thorough and I love how I didn't have to search for another video for the aftermath. Just love it. 10/10. Have a great day and happy new year. I'm liking, commenting and subscribing and hopefully you might have more content I can see! Either way awesome!
Having been a painter for a number of year I totally agree that PREP is always the first step to a quality finish. Second to that is ALWAYS use an appropriate primer. Any paint that says 'One Coat' or Primer included you shouldn't trust. They've had to compromise someplace. Like a multi tool it does a number of things poorly but no one job well.
This is crazy! This is the first color I painted my fridge and I absolutely loved it!!!! Now I bought an actual retro style fridge and I’m going to paint it pink!!! I love this!!!
You inspired me and I watched this like four times before I did mine and it’s awesome. Thanks for updating the handles issue. Now I just go to kitchen to smile at my beach blue refrigerator 😂.
Thank you for the update, ESPECIALLY about the 2nd attempt at painting the handles! My fridge was white, , and I painted a darker Teal, than Claire’s. I moved my empty fridge to the garage, took off the doors, handles, and hardware (was changing the direction of the opening side of the doors anyway) followed all the steps, (except the liquid sandpaper), and waited a solid day In between all the 4 coats. (So 4 days total) Oh, , and I (painstakingly) taped the rubber gasket around the doors. So THANKS Claire, for the inspiration!!!
Hi Claire! Your video was the first in a lineup of videos for repainting a fridge. Although, I watched several of the others, yours had everything I needed to plan my fridge makeover. Thank you for sharing your DIYs and your time! P.S. You look absolutely gorgeous with your hair down. Sorry, I just had to throw that in. Thanks again!
best vid i’ve found !! hate when people say they’re gonna give a time lapse and it’s only like a week.😐 like that doesn’t show me anything lol. this was THE best vid, especially bc of the updates; loved the look of the fridge as well !
I hope people see this. IF YOURE SANDING. USE BREATHING PROTECTION!!!!!!! Sorry for the all caps but the dust collection on your random orbital sander isn't 100% and that means you're breathing in dust made out of metal and any other paint or chemical that is on the fridge.
I have a rusty refrigerator in my garage that's an eyesore but works great. I have always wanted a pink refrigerator with black handles, gonna try this, thanks for all the great tips!
Claire thank you for this super helpful fridge makeover. I, too love the retro look, but not the insane prices. I’m going to view your Instructions a few more times and will “practice” the new skill on a stand-mixer. Thank you again fir this valuable info. You are my hero!
Love that color. That's the color I picked out for our bathrooms. The lighter version that's on your walls, that is. So pretty! Love how the fridge turned out.
Great tutorial and follow through. I hate prepping. But obviously ya gotta do it for the best results. It's funny how long this has been my favorite go to color for about 20 years and I know it's been around for awhile lately, but I've decorated with it for about 18 years now. I love the mints, teals and turquoise! So...I love your fridge!
Oh my goodness, thank you so much for doing this video. I absolutely HATE the limited colors that most appliances come in. It's so sad that we don't have the color options of past decades -- unless we want to spend like $10,000. So, thank you so much for doing this video, you are an inspiration to me. Any chance you also want to paint your oven because I'd LOVE to see a video of that as well!
So cool! (OK, so now you/we know better what to do with the handles). The "real-world" test for the paint job on the fridge case is how well magnets stick to it(especially over paper notices) and whether or not there's any damage to the paint when removing magnets that are placed directly on the case with no paper under them. Hope to hear the results of this "test" (after all, who in modern America doesn't have a notice/drawing/photo tacked up on the fridge?). Thank you, Claire.🙂
So I have since painted this same fridge again! So it has quite a few paint layers on it now and magnets are no problem at all! The fridge has kid art and magnets all over it 🙂
It looks really nice and I hope, it will hold up for a long time. I recently watched another refrigerator makeover, and the guy used car wrap he bought online. Imagine the possibilities there! He also didn't like the old handles, so he bought some he liked better and glued them on with epoxy on very heavy duty magnets, he then attached to the doors.
Really looking forward to doing the same. 😍 Great video, with all the explanation and details. Many videos just leave out half of the job and make it seem super easy when it's not really. Also appreciate the updates afterwards a lot! ❤️
8 years ago, I painted white Rustoleum Appliance Paint onto my fridge. I did a bunch of light coats. I first cleaned it with TSP and lightly sanded it with a sanding sponge and dusted it well. It is still in perfect condition and no one would ever know it was not originally white. Even magnets have not scratched or dulled it. Great way to update an old (but quality-made) fridge. It still keeps perfect temperature, too, unlike the multi-thousand-dollar garbage they're selling nowadays. I also did my washer and dryer and there was only slight scuffing over the years due to my laundry basket being slid across. So I just shot it again lightly and good as new. PS: It stinks like heck for a day
Great job on the fridge! Beautiful and love the color, the exterior of my house is a soft turquoise. I'l be looking for more of your DIY videos, very informative and such thorough research you did . Thank you!
Thanks for sharing the video! 🙏 Love that you're doing it with the dishes in the sink and 🍞 on the counter, refrigerator full of food, kid in the background and not bother at all! 💯🥳🤩🤣!!! Love the results!!! 👌🏼👏🏻👍🏻
Wow! I also have been wanting to paint my refrigerator. I’ve been so nervous. I know that I have to clean and sand but I didn’t think it would hold up. Thank you for the encouragement.
OMG i love it!!! I painted mine pink because lowes delivered a white one to me instead of black. I ended up spray painting mine. I ordered a gloss to paint on which will be here tomorrow so hopefully it will look better! The color looks fine but it's waaaay too matte! And i too was inspired by the Smeg fridges but my budget isn't even close!
@@ClaireRisper Thanks! I am gonna need it! Oddly enough I am going to TRY to paint my old almond color fridge black. Flat black I hope! I am afraid! haha!
Hello! I am so excited to tell you that I painted my fridge this weekend using your techniques! It looks beautiful! Thank you for posting the video it was a life and money saver!
Thanks Claire. I really appreciate your honesty with going back to the handles a second time. Going to give this a try this weekend. We are also in a small kitchen area. The color adds an extra pop.
Excellent presentation. I was just about to paint a brand new fridge but without the primer and that sanding liquid stuff so I'll definitely put in the time and be patient with those steps. Thanks!
It looks amazing! Great job! Love that you took your time to do it and also waited to see how it holds up just so you could share and help someone else. The colour is gorgeous.

You are a life saver, I was scratching my head for I wanted to change my refrigerator like getting the Smeg, but pricing is too high, hope you will be available for me when starting to paint mine. Much appreciated 👐
Wow, thanks for the follow ups after a while - I will definitely use your method to paint the fridge, and you convinced my reluctant hubbie that it can be done! 😅
My husband was totally freaked out when I started lol! Over the years he’s learned to trust me with the home projects but he was worried about this one! 😂 hope your project turns out amazing!
You did a fab job on this, Claire. Very thorough in your prep and painting technique. I will try your approach on my own refrigerator. BTW I love your cabinate, wall and fridge color choices. Inspiring! I'd advise wearing a mask when you sand, however, to protect your lungs. I'd also advise using gloves to protect your hands from harsh chemicals like the liquid sander.
Blessings! Loved watching your video! You did a great job & you've inspired me to get going on the projects I've been procrastinating about. Happy to be your 1000th like & I'm sure you'll have many more! Your fridge looks great & thanks for sharing this project! God bless!
Exactly what I needed, I have a great working white fridge but it's really yellowed. I refuse to buy a new one (landfill ect.) painting it is the perfect solution and I'm going to follow you step by step. Thanks for the legwork ☺
I've been waiting for this video! Loved watching this from start to finish. Your projects always turn out great and the bright colors are a breath of fresh air!
Your my first subscription ever! Definitely an amazing video great quality honest and done right, with mistakes added!! That's super important. Two coats always no matter what and primer I live by that!!
thank you claire for the amazing video. i just bought a stock fridge which is not in that of a good shape, im going to attempt to do exactly as you did, and mb i'll attach some pics or videos to this video as well. i do appreciate the time you put in this video to report the handle part problem. many thanks again.
Hey Claire, nice presentation and I just subscribed! I love the retro look. I'm actually painting my great room Breezeway which is kind of a lighter tint of that color. I came by because I have a stove to paint before I list a property. Thank you so much for the tips and your kitchen looks awesome :)
Thank you! I’m not sure the name of this music, but I get all my music from Epidemic Sounds. It’s a website where you can subscribe to use unlicensed music for videos! I love their selection!
Fridge looks great! Love the colour. Do you have to sand it first? I'd love to do this but I have sensory issues with sanding. While I'm on the subject of sensory issues, please trigger warning for the scratching nails on surface. I even jumped forward and you were still doing it LMAO. Nicely done though
Informative and well-done video! Thanks for the small yet key details and also for the updates! Your fridge looks fantastic. I just finished sanding and am about to head to Home Depot and pick up the prep supplies:)
If you want a paint job that will last a lot longer, you can get appliance epoxy in gallon cans in black and white, and mix the white like you would mix paint.
Wow, that looks fridge looks stunning. I like the look of the handles the second time around even compared to the first round when it was fresh. The second finish just looks prettier. I have a very similar color on my kitchen cabinets; Woodlawn blue by BM. A professional picked all my colors and she choose BM Fog Mist for the walls so if you ever need to paint your cabinets or anything else I can attest that Fog Mist will look good with that fridge and wall color. I would be pretty to replace the white baskets over your fridge with rattan ones or even silver metal to match the silver in your kitchen. Your skin is so perfect. Where are your pores? I love your strawberry blond hair color too!! You look pretty even without makeup. :))
@@ClaireRisper Everyone feels that way. We just finished a huge kitchen remodel. We took the kitchen down to the studs and while it is mostly "done" I still have so many projects not yet finished and it kills me. Have you ever seen those fridge "wraps"? That is a cool way to change your appliance color too but I don't think it looks a bit better than your paint but it is an interesting alternative. Also there are other companies with retro refrigerators for much less than what Smegs cost. If yours ever dies, you can get a retro refrigerator very affordably. I am going to get one for our basement kitchenette area.
Hi friends! Update time! After about 6 months, the paint on my handles started to wear away! One of you lovely viewers gave me the idea to use towel racks for a cool modern handle upgrade! They look so cool, thought I would share the idea!

Thank you so much! I followed your advice, carefully, step-by-step. I'm super happy with the outcome!😅 I'm also a new subscriber.❤❤
Informative and well-done video! Thanks for the small yet key details and also for the updates! Your fridge looks fantastic. I just finished sanding and am about to head to Home Depot and pick up the prep supplies:)
Soooo awesome! Congrats from New Zealand.
If you want a paint job that will last a lot longer, you can get appliance epoxy in gallon cans in black and white, and mix the white like you would mix paint.
your refrigerator looking rhel best!
Thank you for such a lovely comment! I feel like our kitchen is full of never ending projects lol!
I am going to get one for our basement kitchenette area.
my favorite color. :) I'm glad this was the top recommended video. Very nice job. :) I want to try this on my mini fridge someday.
