  • Screamo, or "skramz" is an often misunderstood and under-the-radar style of punk music. Here's ten of my favorite records in the genre.
    I made a playlist of significant screamo albums in case you wanted to explore further: • skramz playlist

    thank you for the quick You And I shoutout.. I played drums for You and I. I love your 10 records here.. Saetia was our tour mates a few times.. and when You and I and saetia disbanded... my brother Casey became part of Hot Cross. so super cool to see you chose Hot Cross in your top 10.. Casey was one of the guitarists in You and I.. and was also excited to see Capacities to be part of your list.. as Tom was the other guitarist from You and I.

    My guitar teacher was actually from the scene.
    He showed me his stuff when I was 17.. so far got stuck with Screamo.
    I am 22 years old now, I did some Screamo songs while I was in school with a friend of mine.
    I played the guitar and was screaming my lungs out and he made some drum beats with his computer, he is a Hip-Hop Guy and always was making Beats on his Computer.
    I quit the guitar for a while and just started playing half a year ago again.
    I want to make some Screamo again now, I am just happy there are still people keeping the scene alive !!
    If anyone wants to make some Screamo (online) feel free to ask ! :)

If you ever create a top 10 songs video, be sure to consider raein - a new day scenario (from the daitro/raein split) . Epic does not describe the experience listening to it. imagine writing it... Cheers!

    I saw hot cross in 2005 at a small book store called all books in summerville SC. I was 13 or 14 and was actually well informed in screamo and punk at that young of an age .my older brother got me into a lot of cool shit and it went way deeper from there. Anyways that show changed my life. Im a drummer... I've gone onto playing music ever since. Was in a screamo band called days become months. We played a shit load kf really cool shows and went on tour twice. Been in about 5 bands after that. Now i have a career as a stagehand/audio tech/set carpenter

    My favorite screamo album is probably Quiet! Pull the Strings although I've listened to You Will Not Survive and Shin Guard's 2020 a lot more.
    One of my absolute favorite albums is Ulises by Viva Belgrado although I think it really crosses that boundary out of screamo and into post-hardcore.
    I'm fairly new to the genre still and enjoyed learning about all these bands I hadn't heard of before.

      Suis la lune is probably one of the best bands out there. That album is so raw and the production is so dirty... Check all the new compilations that they released now because they just release a new discography vinyl compilation box, they have nice old songs all put together.
      And Viva Belgrado's first influence you can tell only by hearing them that it's Suis la Lune, Ulises is a very good album but Flores, Carne is outstanding.

      I think I would consider Alexisonfire post-hardcore, although the argument could be made that their first album was screamo. In general I think their pop sensibilities exclude them from traditional screamo bands, same goes for groups like Silverstein.

    I heard a few songs from Envy as my first exposure to screamo and really didn't care for it initially. A few months later, I was looking at the charts for "powerviolence" genre after being super impressed with powerviolence/grind band called Full of Hell. Orchid came up and I listened to both of those albums mostly just perplexed and confused, but yet something kept drawing me back in. And then I was hooked. Orchid's final album (Gatefold) is probably my favorite screamo album. Some of their stuff from splits/b-sides/unreleased material that appeared on the "Totality" compilation was actually quite different from "Chaos is Me", "Dance Tonight! Revolution Tomorrow“ or "Gatefold". The stuff on "Totality" is more like straight up grindcore but with a bit of emo/screamo influence.

I’d personally put their first album on this list. Though this isn’t my list. I like Off Minors Jazz influenced Screamo. They use a lot of jazzy type of compositions in their music. Because of the experimentation, I would probably label more so as post hardcore.
      Such an amazing album; the incredibly melodic and cathartic moments still give me shivers.

    I really want a nice combination of jazz and skramz, saetia had a touch of that, and off minor, and maybe stuff like i would set myself on fire for you. I was wondering if you knew any bands that really nail that combo though?

      Hi, after reading this question I was kinda wondering as well which bands have those jazzy sounds in their music. I made a small list of screamo bands that are noteworthy with a specific jazz influence (my ear could be wrong, but then at least you have some nice list of bands that are good to check out anyway! They’re all really great)
      - Agna Moraine’s Autobiography
      - In Braille
      - Candidate (there are different bands called like this, it’s the Simple Harmonic Motion album)
      - Hats off, Gentlemen (Not sure if this one counts. Apparently they started out as a Saetia cover band. May explain why I thought they fitted in this list)
      - A Fine Boat, That Coffin (very jazzy, but completely different sounding than the bands you were mentioning. So not sure if you really like this)
      - Okara (more on the edge of math rock/ jazzcore. But what are genres anyway :p)

    There is different type of screamo like pop screamo like Thursday and even silverstein did cover orchid song "destination blood",post screamo like funeral diner, and power screamo or emoviolence ( i prefer called power screamo) like orchid and jeromes dream

    • @VCCassidy
      @VCCassidy 4 роки тому +1

      Carlos Olguin I think what you’d describe as “pop-screamo” was really more like modern post-hardcore with a poppy spin. The clueless mainstream rock press erroneously called bands like Thursday and Glassjaw screamo because they had heard the term but didn’t really know about the underground scene it came from. They just needed a way of differentiating the slightly heavier stuff from bands like Dashboard and Taking Back Sunday.

    how do screamo and post-hardcore differentiate? does phc always have some clean singing? also thank you for so many new bands! i just got into orchid and funeral diner because i was looking for where tragic lyrics came from: death, tragedy, romance, etc. i feel like it was in Hawthorne Heights and my chemical romance, mayyybe in the used and silverstein. thanks man!

    • @MrSilentStorms
      @MrSilentStorms Рік тому +4

      Honestly those two genres can be combined. Post-hardcore is hardcore with more melody to it (leaning toward rock/alternative), not necessarily in the vocals but that definitely happens, while screamo is generally octave chords and based around screaming. Bands like Envy mix the post-hardcore leanings with screamo.

    Great video, but still I think that bands rather should be separated into two camps such as screamo and emoviolence. Also I can't recommend enough "Tristan Tzara" from Germany, "Jasmine" from France, "Shikari" from Netherlands and "...Of Death", "Reversal of Man", "iwrotehaikusaboutcannibalisminyouryearbook" from US.
