I feel like Lagertha and Aslaug were a perfect example of the “love vs lust” ideology. Ragnar loved Lagertha completely and loved her soul…Ragnar lusted for Aslaug but never truly loved her- he loved the sons she bore him.
More like love/lust vs having kids and practicality. Ragnar and Lagertha had chemistry and history. Ragnar and Aslaug had novelty and convenience.
He loved Aslaug just not as much as he did for Lagatha.

@@scotkilroy92it was a pity because he knew Knute was essentially a spy sent by the Earl and that there would be problems when they got back. Had there been a witness that could back up Lagaetha’s story it would’ve mitigated that. He believed his wife 100%, he just understood the shitstorm that was coming.

He knew he stood a better chance fighting the Earl than she did. As great a warrior as she was, she was still at a major physical disadvantage being a woman, and as we saw in the fight the Earl was no stranger to combat.
The first three seasons of "Vikings" are super nostalgic, especially the scenes where Ragnar dedicates moments to Lagertha. Those early seasons were just something else. The dynamic between Ragnar and Lagertha was incredible, full of love and tension. Every time Ragnar showed his respect and affection for Lagertha, it was so touching and real. Their relationship had so much depth and really anchored the show for me. Those moments between them are what make the early seasons unforgettable and so nostalgic.
That's cause they were really married too in real life.

I love how much nuance these actors display. You would expect outrage and threats and possibly immediate violence. And instead they do this careful, courteous dance of an information exchange. At any moment ready to kill each other, but both trying to avoid escalation. So much tension without anyone raising their voice or drawing a weapon.

Yes, he loved lagertha, but he loved the idea of having sons more. In front of that hurting lagertha that bad, didn't matter. If he *truly* loved lagertha, the idea of being with another woman who is not her, wouldn't have rested in his mind so peacefully. I loved the series, I would have loved it even more if lagertha and Ragnar would have given us goals.
They had goals what do you mean? And Ubbe is really the one who completed them and finished them. They wanted to become farmers or get land remember and settle, they wanted to go west and find the goldiland, he wanted to live in peace from then on. He said they came from Farmers and he was a simple farmer. So that's my opinion

@@jeshurunhazelton7789 Ragnar is a powerful man, in this case if he claims to have killed him he also claims to have seen it happen, and people will believe his testimony. If it is just Lagertha's word the testimony is a lot weaker and many people may not believe her. So it was a simple decision in Ragnar's mind to simply strengthen the testimony by claiming to kill him himself.

Imo the scene that truly showed his love was in season 4 when he was in the cage on his way to his death and he was talking to the seer in the uncut version he rips into the seer about telling Lagertha she wouldnt have children so she put her unborn baby in danger because of his prophecies calling them dangerous saying all she ever wanted was to be a mother yes she had Bjorn but wanted another child after Gyda died just the way he tells the seer these things it showed up until the end he cared about and love her
He was also very sad for Lagertha at the moment she had that miscarriage. Devastated even. One would almost think the miscarried child belonged to him. See how he tried to comfort her then?
Ragnar has an analytical mind. He analyzes the situation where lagertha killed knut. Knut is a spy of the earl, and if anything happens to him, there can only be one thing : chaos between ragnar faction and Earl faction. And ragnar knew that he wouldn't win if he fights the earl in his current status. Instead of pointing to others, he chose the best course of action, which is simply to take the blame and make a reason where a statement where he had no choice but to kill knut because of said reason. Same in politics when avoiding longer arguments.
Now that love & loyalty
Gabriel Byrne was such great casting as the conniving earl, but every major character is so wonderfully cast in the first several seasons.
She loved him always too.
After Ragnar’s passing, the show just didn’t feel the same

It was a culture of multiple wives and Ragnar thought he could get away with it, I think he did love Lagertha but his pride wouldn't let him love her fully to commit to her only, as true love is both people submitting to each other. I think he realised this when he lost her, as he got older he became a lot more humble being able to accept a lot of things for how they were such as his brother's true character, and to forgive Floki despite what he did to Athelstan. He even knows he does not deserve to have Lagertha back, which is why he only says to her, that he wishes he never left the farm, showing his regret for the decisions he made in life, and that he lowered himself for power. His death even was a sacrifice for the guilt he felt towards the slaughter of the settlement in England, and he wanted to avenge that mistake. His constant loses made him reliant on drugs and caused him to hide away after Paris, the loss hit his ego the most, his glory was all he had left after he lost his two best friends, his brother, the only wife he ever loved and his son knew him for the drug addict he was. You can see the massive change when he returns, because he finally throws away his pride, selling all of his treasure to buy sailors, ridding Kattegat of greedy people and allowing him to avenge the settlement in England. He allows himself to be humiliated and look pathetic, because he no longer cares about glory, but trying to amend for the mistakes he made. So I do think he loved Lagertha, I just don't think he let himself love her fully when they were together due to how much more he loved himself, and this he ended up regretting completely. Lagertha did right by herself leaving him and Ragnar knows this, he always continues to respect and protect her throughout his life despite no longer being with her. He knows that she deserves no less treatment for it is his mistake alone.
