Nice video mate, good to watch. I’ve been doing plumbing for 20+ years and as good as the paste is. PTFE is your best friend. Trust me every olive and fitting never had a leak since
love watching a gene at work Tom .Especially new to old can be nitemare at times . just one comment on the earthwire you tucked back which im sure you reconnected to the new pipe sum plummers treat earthwire with getting in way but earthbonding under sink is so so important . using two copper earth bonding clips to connect across hot and cold supplys obviously on copper near the tap connections . reason being that these days with use of plastic fittings the bonding is properly done in first place the main earth wire goes directly to the bonding block on the fuse board hence the connections under the kitchen sink ensure the earthing between the not and cold is bonded sound because sometimes there can be a potential difference between the tap connections and if no bonding a person can get a nasty surprize if they put hands on both tap heads they being chromebrass are perfect conductors and can surprize one .. iv sometimes put a meter megger across taps and gotten a p.d .there shuld be absolutly no p.c between the tap heads and at least six square earth cable shuld go straight from the bonede tap pipes to the earth block back and board .great work Tom . love watching yu a truly honest super tradesperson .
Yes mate although my first trade was a sparky I also did loads of jobs like this one. I learned early on that you had to quote for as little work as possible to get the job and to do as little work as possible to make a profit. I knew a few stuck up plumbers who would quote a fortune for a job like this. They would only do it if they could cut out all of the original painted pipework and fit all new pipes and fittings. You've probably seen the type. They have a new van every 3 years and cary more fittings than Plumb fix. I love your real life plumbing vids. Just a little tip for anyone watching who's interested. I know most plumbers burn off paint on old pipe work, but I used to find it made the paint sticky and hard to clean off and also I couldn't tolerate the fumes from some of the old paints. So I would mark off where I was going to cut the pipe and then using a Stanley knife I would scrape vertically down the length of the pipe gradually moving the blade around the pipe until most of the paint was off. The thicker the paint the easier it would come off. For tougher paint I would shorten the blade so it was more solid. I would then just finish off with wire wool. I scraped the pipe before cutting as the pipe would be more solid. With a little practice you can shift the paint really quickly. Thanks Tom for another great vid.
Thanks for the support and the message mate, it is greatly appreciated, getting paint off pipes can be a real pain sometimes, there's a few gadgets you can get now but I find heat and a knife the quickest ways still, I really like the idea of cutting vertically down the pipe to avoid fumes, I will have to give that a try
@@PlumbLikeTom Some guys I've met couldn't scrape a Stanley blade down a pipe as it sets their teeth on edge. One I worked with always left the building when I did it. You have to laugh.
I just try and do everything correctly, most jobs you go to don't comply but it doesn't mean that your work shouldn't. Prosecutions are extremely rare but can occur. Recently a plumber got prosecuted for fitting those stupid toilet spray hoses, in my opinion products that don't comply shouldn't be able to be sold but things never seem to really change, thanks for the support mate
Hi Tom. Nice video. I like to see the job from start to end. Top tip, try and use a Tenon saw on the push fit waste pipe, it leaves a nicer edge. Keep up the good work.
Be nice to see a bathroom fit, I know they're time consuming and you can probably earn more jobbing about I like the little touch there for the apprentices. About starter kits 👌 you should do something for them

As MR tiff always says "real world plumbing" that's exactly what this is mate, been following for a while nice to see you do all sorts from complex plant rooms to "simple" tap swaps etc keep up the content mate, proper old school with the hacksaw to the waste pipe, get yourself a rothenberger rocut 52! Great bit of kit
@@PlumbLikeTom mj tiff had the knipex ones and loved it, until it started tracking the pipe so I only use mine where my rocut doesn't fit, all the best mate!

These jobs 😂 look simple, but everything takes time if everyone tries to do it properly, nice one Tom , that paint on a pipe work is absolute disaster 🙈 get yourself a small Rothenberger grips those mini ones , it’s quite simple to remove the paint just squeeze a bit not to harsh and keep twisting around it left and right , does work very well and rest is steel wool or abrasive strip , I never struggled that much 😅 , I use to use torch , but that technique works better. Good 👍 job tho dealing with old pipes
Thanks mate, cleaning paint off pipes can be a right paint. I keep looking at those spinney things that go on your drill but I don't know how well they work. I've just brought a Nerrad stanley knife which has a scrapper that pops out to help get around the back of pipes to clean paint of. It seems quite good but I didn't have it when this video was made, I might show it in an upcoming video if I think it's any good, thanks for the support as always mate
Best way I've found so far is to heat paint first then put a scrap piece of 22 over the pipe and use the inside to scrape the paint off. Gets round the back aswell
Hi mate, sometimes, if possible, I just change the inside of the stop tap, in theory they should all fit as they should all be BS1010 thread. Other than I generally use a philmac universal transition coupler and then back to copper. This all depends on whether the water can be turned off and how much pipe and space you have to play with, you can send me some pictures and I can try and help more if your struggling mate, those jobs can be really tricky sometimes
Grest vid tom. Can you use that blue handled lever stop tap as the only mains water stop tap in a property or does it need to be a brass stopcock to meet regs ?? Thanks
@@PlumbLikeTom I think back in the day only a brass stopcock was allowed because it had a floating jumper which acted like a non return valve (showing my age now) some modern stopcocks are still like that and some aren't. I also fit lever valves in replacement - much easier for the end user 👍

I need to upgrade my press gun. I currently have an old rems machine but it's too heavy to really use now, pressing is the best way on a lot of jobs and probably is the future, thanks for the support mate

Honestly it is tough when you first start out, If I would be starting from scratch I would set up a facebook page and advertise on there, I know a few guys in my area who do that and they stay busy all the time, heating season is just around the corner so plumbers will be in short supply

Any WRAS approved full bore valve is good for mains water. Sometimes levers are easier to operate than normal stop taps, thanks for watching mate

Great valves but I find them hard to get a proper purchase on them when tighten up. They should re design them..

Do you sometimes reuse olives & nuts?
Only nuts when there off a specific valve, some threads vary so I find its better to use the original nut
Why do you use compression fittings in some areas and solder some others? Any specific reason or just convenience?
