Sculpt The Mad Hatter with WED Clay

  • This 'just for fun' sculpture took just a few hours. I think it came fairly close to the original drawing of the Mad Hatter by John Tenniel, for ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland,’ by Lewis Carroll. A few more hours would have given me time to add details like wrinkles, maybe get the eyes the same size...
    But I did have other things to do. 😊
    You can find the pattern for the face-sculpting form that I used in the video here: www.ultimatepapermache.com/fa...
    There is a small charge for the pattern, and if you're just playing around like I was when I sculpted the Mad Hatter, you don't really need a form. But it is a lot faster than creating an armature out of wire, in the traditional way.
    I used WED clay for this sculpture, available here: amzn.to/47K73Ts
    You might be able to find it at your local pottery supply store, or ask them to order it for you. It's usually less expensive that way.
    If you'd like to learn more about sculpting a portrait based on an outline, try to find an affordable copy of "Sculpting Made Easy" by Catherine Barjansky. I bought a used copy years ago, when it was just a few dollars. The least expensive one ($35) I could find in a fast search today was on Etsy, but you might have better luck if you do your own search. If you have any interest in sculpting portraits, I highly recommend it.
    To see a current artist using this method, check out Amelia Rowcroft's sculpture of Robin Williams here: • Sculpting Robin Willia...
    You'll find a link to her sculpting classes below her video. If you've taken any of her classes, please let us know what you thought of them in the comments below.
    You can find my book "Make Animal Sculpture with Paper Mache Clay" here: amzn.to/1nMUO3a
    And if I forgot to include a link to something I mentioned in the video, please let me know. Also, if you like videos like this and you'd like me to make more, let me know that, too. 😊

      He does feel more 'real' to me, now that I can see him in the round. It's a fun way to get to know a character, so I need to do this more often. 😊

Any other brands you recommend? (Love your ADC recipe) Looking for manufactured smooth clay that holds fine detail that does not require a kiln/firing. TY

    What is the head form made of? I happen to a plastic (I think)one. Like a mannequin head. Would it work? What about paper mache. Would it stick?
    How long does the clay stay moist enough to work? It would take me a long time to get it right (whatever I was making).

    • @UltimatePaperMache
      @UltimatePaperMache  5 місяців тому

      I made the form out of cardboard, using my pattern - but a mannequin head will work, too. I have one, and I use it a lot. Paper mache will stick to it, but then you'd only be able to use it once. The WED clay I'm using stays moist longer than normal wet clay,. but you do need to cover it with a damp cloth and a plastic bag if you need to leave it for a few hours.

      Ah - I thought it was arsenic, but mercury sounds more reasonable! (Not reasonable to actually use on a daily basis, of course...) I just looked it up, and you are right. Here's a good source: www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/mad-hatters-disease

    • @autumngrace8541

      @UltimatePaperMache the symptoms of the madhatter on Alice Wonderland, however, didn't exhibit the true madness symptoms of mercury poisoning as those who were actually in the hat making industry and wore the hats daily.
      Funny how dentist have had to do certain protocols for safe handling of taking care of mercury waste, yet we're put in so many mouths. Sorry to go off topic with the madhatter stuff, I had recently learned about it in the last 6 months. Love your paper mache work. Just starting to explore. Binge watching. Can rice flour be used in place of gluten flour?

    He is fabulous Jonni. I look forward to downloading your pattern and trying this. I have been searching online for a way to seal WED clay. I love the feel of pottery clay and WED clay but I am not interested in moulding the finished piece. I would just like to keep it the way it is. If anyone can help me with this, I would very much appreciate it. As far as weather is concerned, it will reach 38 C down under today. 100 F . I love the cold so happy to do a house swap if anyone is interested in travelling 9,500 miles 😊😄

    • @UltimatePaperMache
      @UltimatePaperMache  5 місяців тому

      That would be a fun trip - but I have to stick around to take care of the chickens. 😊
      I don't know if you can seal any kind of wet clay to keep it permanently - although my grandson made me a small, flat heart, about 1/2" thick, with WED clay. It lasted for years, until my cat knocked it off the shelf. If it had been thicker, or if it was a solid sculpture, I'm sure it would crack. My Mad Hatter's clay cracked in one day where it was put on very thinly over the armature, and I'm sure the rest would crack apart and end up on the table if I left it alone. If I wanted to keep the Mad Hatter, I'd use paper mache over it, then cut the paper mache in half and remove the clay and the form underneath. You can see how I do that in this video (although the paste I used is no longer sold): ua-cam.com/video/BBqBnrtAwUQ/v-deo.html
