Now this is an episode that felt like old school Game of Thrones. They put their foot in this episode. I feel like the previous episodes were good but just a preamble. Now we are finally getting to the nitty gritty. Love these Review/recaps James.
my only fear is that i assume they will recast the kids actors again, because the one-eyed guy in the trailer sure as hell doesnt look like the one we saw in this episode. i dont want more recasts, but i guess for kids (at least the youngest ones) its inevitable
Who ever thought Daemon would be a more honorable husband than his brother. When asked if the maester should cut out the baby, daemon asks if the mother would survive it, to which the maester says “no” and Daemon refuses to trade his child for his wife. People thinking before this episode that Daemon was the “villain” have no idea. He’s loyal to family and just cannot show his emotions properly. But Alicent, Criston, clubfoot and Alicents kids (in the future) have the blackest of hearts.
Well, you have found your heroes and villains. The same Daemon murdered his wife, sullied his neice and soon would dishonour the memory of his recently dead wife as well. He is an excellent character but Alicent or her faction's hearts are no blacker than his. Martin didn't write about heroes and villains in Fire and blood. People have a weird habit of imposing those infantile binaries.
A lot of YT review content is more entertaining than the show, which is why I started making sarcastic recaps to roast things like Rings of Power which was really pissing me off and was a massive clusterfuck of a mess! HOTD is a lot better but I roast it anyway ;)
There’s a consistent visceral texture to every episode with the layers of intense imagery to each and every episode. Episode one, a nasty C-section while knights are beating each other to death. Rhaenerya experiencing the brothel while Alicent looks absolutely detached as the King does his thing. Daemon gruesomely taking care of his wife then Sir Cristin Cole beating Sir Joffrey to death. The feels adds to the story-telling.
Love the acting, writing, scenes. But saying that there is not a character I care for. In original GOT there was always a character I could care for. In this series all the characters could be eliminated and it wouldn’t bother me. But still enjoying the intrigue.
Yes, sir, I am enjoying it. Thanks for reviewing every week; tuning in to Geekin' after every episode enhances my enjoyment of the series. I know GoT has received criticism for wrapping the final season too quickly , though my memory of that series is not how they rushed the events of the final episodes, but rather, all the great moments throughout the series. Furthermore, the immersive production of GoT I think -- the YEARS I spent hanging on all week long to watch the next episode -- is serving this new series quite well. The results: I was on board halfway through episode one of HotD.
The character development in this show is incredible! When Rhaynera decides to bring her newborn baby herself right after delivering her showed how much she feared for her baby and how much trust has been lost between her and her former bestie the Queen Alicent. It was such a calculated scene and exacting performance. Just wow!!!
The time Jump was handled really well. I've gotten so attached to the young actresses I was concerned but they really pulled it off! This show has been Non-Stop badass! I'm a big fan of Olivia Cooke who I believe killed it tonight! And the new actress playing Rymara was fantastic also
Thanks so much for your enthusiastic breakdown. The episode was so intense, especially the way Leana chose to end it. I love the way you called the kids ‘princelings’. 7 Hells is something I didn’t get🥲
Now THAT is how a training scene should be done. They trained in a designated training yard with wooden swords and not steel blades. Plus no silly spins and crazy dodges.

Probably my least favourite episode simply because of the (inevitable) timeskip and readjustments but it's STILL a 7/10 lol. Strange to think that everything we have seen to date is establishment, we have (I think) another 3 seasons with these characters with maybe a couple more timeskips although shorter ones. As good as the young, departed cast was we NOW have the Dance ahead of us.
The only thing I am miffed about is that Sir Cole didn't get the opportunity to thrash Breakbones into Brokenbones. For some reason, the show is reluctant to show him as the greatest warrior in Westeros at that time!
He was shown thrashing Daemon in episode 1 as well as Joffrey in episode 5. And he stabbed that boar in episode 3. That is hardly reluctant. And furthermore, the show is just getting started. Episodes 1 to 6 of Season 1 are prologue.
