Great carving. I carve fairy houses and light houses in cottonwood bark. I like how you take smaller cuts with your tools. I use a similar method and have been told I need to take bigger cuts. I smile back and say I like to take my time and relax when carving. Please carve what ever you like and I will watch.
Made my day finding you. Meant to be because your voice and approach to carving poetry into wood brings me back to my childhood of Pinocchio. The Heart inside the wooden chest as Gepetto tirelessly and relentlessly creates someone He could Love just as the Lord did for us.. Thank you for your gentleness and keep making beauty around the madness of the world… your new viewer aka “ForeverBoy” 🦁 👊🏼
Thank you for teaching me. I just started carving and this has been one of the most educational six minutes I've experienced so I'll have to share that thank you.
This is an excellent video on carving wood spirits in cottonwood bark, highly recommended! I have a handful of bark set aside to do a series of faces, and this video has awesome reminders and guidance. Thank you!
Sweet very nice!! I use hard wood for carving not really hard but in-between nothing like yours but I'm getting there my noses is a little challenging but I'm learning your work is superb very well done ✅
I quite like your carvings sir. I think you do an excellent job at carving some Brian Froud fantasy creatures. Anything from his Faeries to even characters from the Dark Crystal.
Nice! I make these but I use a dremel tool. I find it easiest to carve the nose and and then base everything else around that aswell, I can never get the beard to look just how I want it to tho. I've also only made about 20 of them so I'm fairly new at it.
Beautful face! The most beautiful art to me is sculpture of the best of humanity that captures us at what always feels what is possible and those we look up to and cherish among us. Beautiful art of beautiful human Beings seems to remind us of all we can be and holds back the dark spirits of this world especially that we have much to fight for and be thankful for to God in heaven the most beautiful of all whose faces we will one day see again for eternity.
That was a wonderful expression on a very fine carving.! I subscribed to your Channel. I was wondering if you could tell me where you get your Cottonwood bark. I bought some in the past from eBay and it was very poor quality and difficult to carve . I would appreciate the link to the sources you use. Thank you and best wishes
Thanks for the kind words and for subscribing! I harvested this bark with a friend up in Vermont a couple of summers ago and just lucked out. I have heard carvers having luck on eBay but it's always a gamble. Just curious, what makes it difficult to carve?
@@wilkinsonwoodcarving some of the Cottonwood bark I got had a very dark exterior, almost black. And it was not soft and easy to carve. In some of the other videos I have seen on carving Cottonwood bark, it appeared to me that the Cottonwood bark with a gray exterior surface seem to be the finest . I suppose Cottonwood bark differs from region to region. I'll keep looking, thank you for your response. Best wishes
I have another theory why they might like faces of old, bearded men. From my own stint in drawing faces completely from imagination with no reference material, I strived to learn drawing very symmetrical, smooth and beautiful faces. But I noticed how "beautiful" faces are kind of boring to draw. The penwork is just so subtle and non-dramatic. But drawing old, wrinkly faces with facial hair or even scarred and weatherbeaten skin, those faces are FUN to draw because you can go absolutely nuts with the linework. I can imagine that it must be the same for carving and sculpting.
@@wilkinsonwoodcarving I can imagine. For the same reasons I also liked to draw demonic/possessed faces and also plenty of craniums 😄 Always wondered what it would be like to carve or sculpt a cranium. 🤔
I have 4 or 5 of your wood Spirits which I purchased years ago at street Art Fairs in Chicago . They are so unique and special hanging on a wall. Great to see and hear you creating one. Do you still sell them?
Hello Sir, My question is, I have some Cottonwood Bark that is about 7 years old since I purchased it. Wood it be to dry to work with and if so do I soak it in water to perhaps give it moisture once again or is it fine the way it is. Thank you.
Hi it should be fine to carve. Only one way to find out lol I have never tried soaking. I would recommend trying it on a small piece this way if it doesn't work out it's not a waste
Awesome videos, one thing I would really like to ask though, I can't find cotton wood like yours anywhere, I live in the UK, I tried looking on Amazon and online but if found nothing 😢
Thank you! I know people find it on eBay. It could be difficult to get wood with bark on it because of importing laws. I had that issue trying to ship a piece to Germany
@@Dr.D21 yes, but be careful if the knife does not lock. I would recommend wearing a glove (kevlar is best) until you are more used to handling the knife. There are a lot of great projects with just one knife to see if you like the hobby
Hey there I just stumbled upon your channel and got inspired gotta ask do I need a special equipment/knife? What tools do I need? Also how does one start with this new hobby? I’m quite skeptical I can do something like this carving in the video as my first go haha
Hi! Thanks for watching and reaching out. I've been carving for 10 years. Like all things, there is definitely a learning curve but a great way to start is to get a decent knife that stays sharp. There are a ton of great UA-cam tutorials/books for beginners projects. I'd start there then if you like it, start investing in some new tools. Have fun and enjoy it's a great hobby.

I have a shiny chrome hunting knife, a forestry axe and some harder woods in my area that i collect from the street. Hard to even carve detail into the wood, let alone my own name. Any beginner suggestions?
I tried using the same tools last night, loved it, I usually use power tools but the detail I was able to do with these tools was really nice, I’m on year two doing these and chainsaw carvings, mostly use my die grinder and dremel with flex shaft tho, and off subject but how you was talking about spiritual stuff, do you believe in Jesus Christ?

Thanks! Big cuts can be useful, but bigger cuts can lead to big problems lol
I love how you say you find features in the wood vs you make or create features! Fantastic job!
Thanks! That's the best way to describe it, it's like finding the carving in the wood 😊

How can I get into wood carving with no experience. It seems super cool.
Get a decent knife and you can pick up some wood at a craft store. I'd look for some tutorials on UA-cam or a beginner wood carving book

Can you do a video on the tools?
It's the partially open mouth that sets it apart. And strangely, he looked like he HAD a pupil before you cut it out.
Thanks! It was just a pencil mark. I like to position the pupil to make sure it looks right before I cut it into place
