So, I just lost a subscriber from posting this video. I know it isn't what this channel is going to be about, but I just thought it was a cool thing to see. Remember, if you see a particular video on the channel that may not be to your taste, you can just skip it. Normal service will resume. I'm a bit gutted actually, I thought this was awesome.
You need to do what you want with *your* channel.
You are *never* going to please all the people all of the time, but if what you are doing makes you happy then do it.
You are dealing with the 'people of the Internet' and they are a pretty weird mixture of mainly good people, some great but a few are just downright nasty and you will get to see (and hear from) them all

My Uncle ran a group of twelve steam powered fishing boats converted into minesweepers out of this port during the war. He was awarded the DSC for his command and for work above and beyond normal duties. His name was Lewis Courtney Viner. He was a good man.

Manoeuvering with a stern line tied on like that is called "Springing the boat" and is a trick used by many boats in tight spaces.
Yeah, just never witnessed a boat of this size do it in such close quarters. Probably a regular occurrence, but I enjoyed it!
@@BumblingSailor - nip up to the western isles. Some of the CalMac ferries do manoeuvres that scarcely seem possible, but it is all in a day's work for them.
Just seen this video!! Can not believe that you find it so amazing turning the Newhaven-Dieppe ferry!! My father was the last British Rail Shipping and Port Manager at Newhaven from 1971 thru to 1982/83!! During his time there the x3 ferries working the service routinely came in Bow first into the linkspan and upon departure turned and left Bow first!! The x2 French vessels Villandry and Valancey did sometimes turn outside the harbour and come in stern first!! Originally they both did not have Bow doors!! They were fitted during a refit but I believe that they were problematic!! I have fond memories as a child either sitting in my dads office or Newhaven Harbour Signal Box on a Sat morning watching the 11:00 ferry turning and departing!! Sometimes if I was lucky we would actually go on to the ferry for coffee with the Captain before departure!!
That's awesome! Yeah, it happens far less often now. After all, it's a 146m ferry turning in a 149m space. Apparently the captains must do it twice in a given period to keep their entitlement to enter without a pilot. And obviously in certain weather conditions.
There are a lot of epaulets in some harbors. There are fewer real Captains. This is one. Their confidence in the crew and the crew’s confidence in the Captain are apparent. Thanks for capturing and your commentary.

The skipper is no doubt French. He will have crew overboard swimming with ropes on them. It's what they do. I met a French bloke. He was sailing around the world in a 28 foot boat. It had no motor at all. He wanted to dock in Noumea and they had no-one to bring him in. So he tried sailing. No wind. So he swam it in. No kidding. He got off the back and pushed, moving the rudder by hand. The marina operator thought he was insane. Anyhow, his mate was buying our yacht. He said he wanted to check the keel. Put on goggles and jumped overboard. Literally 2 minutes later he came back up.

i watch AYO fishing, he started out fishing,then he bought a boat doing it from nothing, then he posts other stuff, challenges etc and i watch everything because its entertaining, post what you want if its entertaining its worth watching, simple :)

We just sat and watched a ferry video. Didn't see that coming. Given the speed and accuracy you cab reverse me dad's old shitty trailer into a tight spot I expect to see some impressive squeezing the 26th Comtesse between two expensive yachts and terrified gazillionaires in Monaco!

if you seriously do look into getting one, look at a matched pair bow and stern. The additional control of thrusters makes manoeuvring in tight confines a whole lot easier.
Bow and Stern thrusters are an amazing thing. I have been considering drilling a couple holes 8n mine and installing the tube. And be able to turn on a dime. Spin in circles lol.

Truly amazing ship handling, even though she has bow and stern thrusters. I just checked, and she is 142.63m long, while the widest part of the Ouse where she was is 155m! You can also see the deckhand on the port bow keeping the bridge updated via walkie-talkie. What I find curious is that she is currently supposewd to be operated by DFDS Seaways France, but stll has Transmanche Ferries painted on her hull, when Transmanche Ferries was supposed to have been dissolved in 2006! Apparently DFDS still uses the Transmanche name.

Could you see a stern like holding them? That would explain a lot, but it is definitely possible he just walked it with the help of the bow thruster and then just held himself at the perfect distance from the dock

Your sister did a pretty good job turning it around and with a bit more practice, she should be able to do it a bit more quicker. Any master mariner could do that with their eyes closed - NOT! That was absolutely awesome to watch and sincerely appreciated the expertise of the master of the vessel. I couldn't think of anything more harder to do. Cheers mate!

I know this port well . I was the mate on an aggregate dredger , we used to turn in the same place sometimes with the ferry on it's berth , then back up through the swing bridge but we were smaller than the ferry.
That's awesome. I could honestly watch things like that all day. With a coffee. And in better weather 😂

In the old days of newhaven being a railway port. They had a tug based at the port to help with this. Now you see why

used to be a common trick used in marsellie when we docked there on cruises, especially when windy in a confined port like this,leaving a line or two at the stern to provide a piviot point, good deckhands then tension or slack as required via the winch’s

Because Newhaven Port is French owned with one quay..they have to reverse and turn to get pointing at Dieppe. It's not a deep port and wasn't the original river mouth...which was Seaford.
Yeah, I've watched it daily, usually reverse all the way out past the breakwater and turn out there, never seen them do it this way before. It was awesome.

Oh, and mine is 27ft so it's harder because the wind would affect it so much and I haven't got a bow thruster or crew and er, so there.

It,s called spring off does not matter what size boat wind was on his port side .Keep a stern line on his port side to the dock power up on the starboard engine and round she will go(ok had the bow thruster on as well) us it all the time on yachts i deliver if the wind is in a bad direction

I have travelled on this ferry quite a few times in the past and this manoeuvre was only carried out a few times, she normally backed out from the berth and turned in the outer harbour, a lot quicker.

The only time Iv'e been into Newhaven was to shelter from a rising westerly gale in the 80 year old gaffer that I was trying to sail around from Ipswich. I was absolutely knackered and 'stupid-tired' and so hadn't noticed the ferry port. Sometime during the night I woke up with the very same ferry's bow just a few yards from my own and the huge wash of his bow thruster as he pushed it up against the dock. Seemed to know what he was doing though !

I had a boat just up river from there on Denton Island at Meechings. It's a lovely place to have a boat and a quick day trip can take you round Beachy Head and alongside Eastbourne. A slightly longer trip is west to the isle of wight. The boat you bought looks like a fair bit of work, but slowly slowly catch a monkey! Are you on the hard opposite the ferry terminal? I will give you a wave on the 15th Jan, I'm booked on the 07:00 boat and good luck with the project.

Does happen often that the ferry has to do a 180? Certainly had me on the edge of my seat!
It's the first time I've seen it. Must have been due to wind direction and strength. Usually it just reverses all the way out of the channel and turns around outside of the breakwater.
I use this route a few times a year and back in September 22 it was the first time I've seen it do that! I was watching from the deck and the winchmen had a lot to do keeping the lines at the correct tension. It didn't seem anything like as tight as it does in this video, but the decks are towards the stern, nothing up the bow so hard to judge. Funny enough I will be on it again in two weeks, will report back on the departure technique!

I live near Hailsham and have been looking for a boat for a while. I was thinking of a mooring at Eastbourne or maybe Brighton. I hadn’t thought of Newhaven. What’s your thoughts on the Marina/Facilities/pricing?

Hi, the facilities are a bit old but functional. The staff are great, friendly and helpful. My moorings are paid until April, think its around £3800pa for an 8m boat, but don't quote me on that! 😂. The only thing is that the berths almost dry out at very low tides. It's very soft mud and the berths themselves have deep areas where the boat is, so they don't tip over or anything 😂

In all the time I've been fishing from the harbour, I've ever seen that manoeuvre before, even in some pretty wild gales, although then again, I'm normally fishing evening/night, so less likely to do it when dark, always backed it out to beyond the harbour wall and turned, not even seen them turning inside the harbour wall, but then again, would it be deep enough even at high tide? Surprised NP&P haven't dredged the sand out just so it can turn inside the harbour wall in calmer waters, rather than straight out into rough sea.

@@BumblingSailor just had a quick search and only showed 1 other video from a year ago, same ferry turning in the harbour. As you say, awesome to see it happen in real time, especially as the harbour doesn't look wide enough and seeing a few sib/kayak guys launching from Simpson's slipway during low tide not realising they'll be stepping into the silt, you mentioned the depth of the channel too.
As a non seafaring person I must admit the turning of that ferry was absolutely amazing. Power to the captain who ever he is.
The helmsman has obviously been watching far too many You Tube videos of Greek ferries..................

I dont know why I like to watch people of all skill levels take on a project like a Sailboat. I totally get your honesty about taking on the project, but there are some questions I have maybe you would like to answer, maybe even gather all your questions you get and do a video answering them if you feel up to it.
First question is why did you choose that size of boat, it seems small and I bet if your looking to fix a boat you may want to choose a boat that woudl be larger as you are a grown man. I understand money does not grow on trees, so that may be it, but I can immagine a larger boat that may need more repair that may not even cost as much as the one you have now.
Seccond question is do you watch other sailing channels to learn the best way to make repairs on your own boat? I dont know where you skills lie but from most of the channels I have seen when you put (Shore Power socket) a whole in your boat you may want to seal it with Epoxy so it does not rot the wood between the Fiberglass layers. Also I did not see you use any sealant beyond the rubber seal that came in the kit, maybe temporary fix but I hate to see you have problems later that could have been prevented at the time of installation.
Lastly I want to comment about your video style and that is to say Do it as you see fit, I do not think there is a wrong way. You may find later you want to improve the quality, or the method to your video series, but either way its your channel and do whatever you like. With that said you may from time to time get suggestions on how to improve the videos you make. One thing you must never change is your humor and quipy remarks as it just plain funny.
Things you have not really done is tell us more about your boat as in a way of a in depth walk arround. We also would like to know more about you and skills you have and how they will help you with your endeavor.

Hi, thanks for your questions. The reason I got this small boat is pedigree and seakeeping. The full keel, narrow beam and low height means she'll heave to well (a great safety feature), she'll punch through waves, and take water over her bow without it hitting a big coach roof. The lack of volume low down in the Hull form means she won't 'bounce' up waves due to excess buoyancy. Everything about the boat is geared towards seakeeping and robustness, and she's of a size that's easy to handle solo.
She's laid up in solid fibreglass, there's no core to seal up. I've got sikaflex to replace the gasket, it was -4 and outside of the curing range of sealants, and now its rained almost constantly since.
I know I've probably missed something but I can't read your comment while I write the reply. I'm doing a walkaround soon, hopefully it'll clear things up. Thanks!

Suggestions for you are; Do your best to put out content on a weekly if not more often if you can. For the money situation I do suggest having a Patrion link in every video you post and make it easy to find, also you need to put together a Online Shopping Wish list for things you need for boat repairs as well as maintaining your channel ie Camera equipment and anything else you can think of and remind your viewers if they can to check out said wish list if they can help out. IMO a One time purchase is easier to bite into than a monthly obligation for some people. I think its good to remember to not think of this as all alone so reach out to local business than may be able to help you, talk about your project whenever you can, this means to also think of contacting Marine Companies that may want to sponsor you in some way.
I dont know how organized you are as a person or if you even want to be, but maybe start now while you can. Start a list of items you have on hand, things you need, and projects you will be doing and possibly adding the things you need to complete those projects.
Lastly one thing I notice when watching videos is how hard it is to film all the work being done and as you are alone I suggest a camera mount that you can leave in a static position and simply work and fiddle with the footage in editing. All of this will come with time and the more you do it the better routine you will fall into.

I'm hesitant to keep mentioning it and directing people to it. I've worked hard all my life for other people, so asking people to basically give me their hard earned money feels very awkward and unnatural to me. Even though I know this channel won't survive if they don't. I feel cheeky asking, but also need to. I'll have to reconcile that morally. I've been known to shoot myself in both foot and head if I feel something is 'wrong' 😂. I'm aiming to have an 'episode' every week that will be numbered, then in between do some other little videos about things that I'm doing or find interesting that might be outside the the 'norm' for the channel. I'm doing my best to engage with everyone that comments, it's almost become a full time job, but I guess that's a good thing! Please keep any advice coming, I appreciate it all. Happy New year! TBS.
Isn't this done using computer controller thrusters?
No, the ferry only has a bow thruster. It couldn't use the rudders/props at the rear as this would have sent it forward into the marina, so it worked into the stern line wrapping around from it's port side. All seamanship, no computers.

I think her mains are definitely oil, I've seen the black smoke come out when she gets going. In most of the video her mains are idle and she's using the wind, spring line, and bow thruster (I assume powered by generators). Awesome to watch!

I can see the ferry and I have seen it turning in its berth a few times. I want to say that it used to be done regularly but procedure was changed to reversing out after an incident or grounding, however I can't find the article so perhaps it was Dieppe.
