I think that OKC, while improved, didn't improve as much as people think. Chet is best utilized as a center, so Hertenstein's fit next to him is not seamless. And if Chet plays as a center, then they are paying very big money for a backup center. I believe they should have gone all in on Lauri. Additionally, they don't really have a backup point guard that is not a rookie (though I am high on Mitchell and Jones), and last season they had ridiculous luck with injuries.
Lauri is not a good perimeter defender, which would mess up the defensive cohesiveness already established. He's an average rebounder, and a below average low post defender. We don't need him for scoring, which is about all he would provide, because scoring is definitely not an issue for this team.

Agree with everything you say except the 7'5 stopper--if that guy plays any minutes during the season, they will be garbage minutes, unless both Gafford and Lively miss extensive time, but this guy's a project and may never play meaningful NBA minutes. It's not that hard to understand. They needed a rebounding big body center to cover one of their only downsides so they overpaid a bit for him and they are still extremely young so adding a good vet like Caruso can only help them.
