  • Did you know there is a subspecies of Raccoons with only a population of 200 raccoons left in the wild!
As the smallest species of raccoon, Cozumel Mexico is the only place in the world where these little guys exist!
Although raccoons are normally solitary animals that typically feed on crabs, fruits, insects, crayfish, and small vertebrates, most of the population will stay close to human activity for a quick meal!
Unfortunately for these cute little trash pandas, they are listed as Critically Endangered on the iCUN list. Not only has most of their natural habitat been taken away due to tourism, parasites and diseases plague this species that are spread from dogs and cats living on the island. Today, there are only around 200 - 300 pygmy raccoons left in the wild!
Although the Temptation to feed these cute little animals seems like a helping hand, it can often contribute to their declining populations.
It's important to remember, When coming across animals in the wild, it is always best to leave them to feed off their natural food sources!!
