    Interesting to hear the JJF/Pyzel chat the other day and both talking about how rocker line helps with easy paddling (in the Ghost) and how JJF's boards have all got bigger over the years. Much less "over refined" in their words and more allround.

      Yes. It was great to see this video as it supports what I'm saying with regard to volume vs board design.

      @@Nomad-bi6su thanks. I feel like I have a good board for all conditions. 🤔 But there is always room for one or two more.....

    My hybrid/small wave board is probably 3-4 liters more than the calculators recommend. I haven't been surfing that long so it's a relic from wanting to surf something smaller but still having a chance to get into waves. Assuming correct wave selection, positioning, paddle strength recently I noticed I actually struggle to get it into hollower/faster waves. The added width, the huge single concave, and up front foam gives the board too much lift and causes me to get hung up on the lip all the time. If I do make the drop the thing tracks straight towards the beach and I can't stay anywhere near the pocket! My next "stubby" board will have less volume.

    • @BigGuyBoardsSurfshop
      @BigGuyBoardsSurfshop  4 роки тому

      Yeah, give it a go. If you want volume to help with paddling, flat boards with a wide nose do this well.
      Just use volume as a rough guide and experiment wherever possible.
      Thanks for watching. 👍

    Thanks for putting this content out! I’m 6’ 95kgs and always getting board recommendations over 40L.
    If you had to choose a daily driver board to ride 2-6 ft waves would it be the Hydra? Been eyeing one but also like the RNF Retro. Or would you skip the fish shapes all together and stick with something like the Uber driver XL?

    • @BigGuyBoardsSurfshop
      @BigGuyBoardsSurfshop  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Brandon. That depends on a number of factors such as your surfing and what kind of waves you ride. For example; A fish would be faster down the line and more forgiving, but a small wave shortboard would be more manoeuvrable. If you can give me more detail on where you surf / your ability / how often you surf / how you like to surf / etc i can give you some specific recommendations.

      @@BigGuyBoardsSurfshop Surf in Cocoa Beach, FL. Some weeks 4 days a week and other weeks not all. Ride waist to head high usually. Occasionally over head.
      Used to live in Australia and ride a 45L FireWire dominator. That was 7 years ago. I’ve done some wakesurfing in there but didn’t pick it up again until last fall. Bought a softech flash 6’ 39L which works decent as a groveler but isn’t a great overall board. Can ride down the line front/back side and do turns. Probably intermediate depend on your definition.
      Thinking something under 6’ around 38 liters in epoxy. Like a stiff board and feel like a fish in epoxy would be perfect or something like a hydra.
      Thanks for the help!

      @@searcher415 Something like a Hydra or similar would be perfect for most Florida waves for an intermediate surfer. Make sure you get some big fins as they will make a big difference to drive.

    How old are you , scott? Only asking cos age is a real factor in volume !

      I'm 36. Relatively good paddle fitness after 25 years of surfing. I'm probably on the low end of volume for my weight / ability, but I can catch waves pretty well and like having a lower volume, more manoeuvrable board.

  • @lelosurf

    Hi Scott, question regarding your groveller. Can you elaborate on the reason to size that on the lower end of your volume scale. I guess you could squeeze out a lot more speed / catchability out of the groveller when sizing it up more. Especially since you ride your daily driver (i guess 70% of waves ridden with a daily driver) with considerable more volume. I don’t get why you would decline more volume in your groveller for really shitty waves. Cheers

    • @BigGuyBoardsSurfshop
      @BigGuyBoardsSurfshop  4 роки тому +2

      Good question. Due to the Hydras template and rocker it's quite easy to paddle. If you had an Uber XL and Hydra same volume, Hydra would be loads more easy to paddle. Hence the drop in volume and therefore length, which fits better into small waves.

    Hi Scott, I'm about 90kg at 6'1 height, 42 years and somewhere between Beginner Intermediate and Intermediate. I'm surfing super weak Northern European wind waves and on vacation I'm usually going to France or Portugal for better waves. Volume calculators spit out something like 41-44 liters in Volume.
    Looking at shortboards, that would bring me to something like a 6'5-6'6 which I'd like at my height. I also got grovelers between 5'8 and 5'10 with that volume and I feel I struggle with the popup although it works at 80% of popups at higher board lengths.
    Would I need a longer groveler at my height or do I have to do something different when popping up?
    PS: Before the lockdown I was at about 82kg and riding a 37L Rare Bird which was pretty much spot on in better waves.

      It's a combination of technique, equipment and possibly fin size. Try something short with more volume. You will also need xxl size fins to provide required drive. It is also a fact that heavier people find it more difficult to ride small waves. You will never find it as easy as a 70kg person.
      There are also loads of good tutorial videos on riding small waves.

      almost mu exact situation lol. we are almost the same. I just got a 5'11 and think it's too short. it's 43.5 liters though. I've only ridden it a few times in crappy florida waves. I keep thinking I need like a 6'6. but I'm gonna keep trying ! I spent $1000 on this board

    Any comments on the OG square tail puddle jumper vs the hydra? I have a stock 6'2 puddle jumper and am about your weight/height. Was thinking of getting the 5'11 hydra too.

      I had a Lib Tech PJ. Check my review. The Hydra feels better as a grovel board. PJ possibly slightly more performance in better waves, but it's been a while since I rode it. I'd go Hydra.
