  • The moment a national hero became an Olympic legend. Kelly Holmes had already won 800m gold at Athens 2004 just days before lining up in the 1500m final.
Not since Albert Hill in 1920, had a Brit won two athletics gold medals in the same Olympic Games

I was a teenager during the 2004 Olympics and Kelly became and still is one of my Team GB Heros. What an amazing achievement it was to win 2 golds, I think Kelly inspired the current generation of female athletes and gave them the self- belief that they too can achieve their dreams.

Kelly Holmes coming from near the back to win in the last 300m is still one of the most incredible things I've seen in athletics.

I remember it like it was yesterday. I was at a neighbour's house, on my feet, pulling my hair out shouting, ''There isn't f***ing time! There isn't f***ing time! THERE ISN'T F***ING TIME! I don't believe it! I don't BELIEVE it! I DON'T BELIIIEEVE IT!!!!'

I was so pleased for her because she had been on the end of so many hard luck stories throughout her career with injuries etc, well done Kelly, you showed whats possible if you never give up.

I come back to watch Kelly's Golds every so often, she had bad injury issues before 2004 and I remember she wasnt expected to do well. Those Golds were earned the hard way, what a legend she is.

Kelly was a brilliant tactician. Once one physically becomes a top athlete that's only 90% of the training. The brain also has to go through intense training. One of our (nameless) finest lady middle distance runners could learn so much from Kelly.

Summer Olympics. 1904 USA. Sent Louis. Men's marathon. The first officially recorded use of doping at the Olympic Games, US athlete Thomas Hicks, was doped twice during the race by his coach, and he managed to cross the finish line and become Olympic champion.
