    Like you guys, I profile all my big reels. Note: Think of the drag plates’ life and efficiency as a bell curve graph. When the reels are new they make less drag than once used on a a few good fish that pull high drag. The why?...bc just like the clutch in a car or new brake pads on a rotor, the drag plates when new have no grooves and they don’t seat together until some heat and pressure break them in. Moral of the story....check them once in a while to see when they peak out and re-adjust accordingly; and after much use you may want to check them again, as with repeated heat cycles and wear the plates slowly deteriorate.

    • @druallen2366
      @druallen2366 2 роки тому

      I got a avet 80 exw in a few weeks ago and had the same issue. The lever was in free spool and I couldn’t get the Knob to budge but only a click or two. I ended up grabbing a set of channel locks and slowly turning the knob. It didn’t take much effort to turn once I had the channel locks on it. My guess is the reel just needs to be used and heated up and then it’ll function better. But like he said in the video, once you get the knob set where you want you shouldn’t have to mess with it anymore. Hope this helps.

    Just curious when you are spooling up your reels do you use high or low gear setting??

    • @GulfCoastNation
      @GulfCoastNation  3 роки тому

      Always spool the braid in low speed- You should have around 20-25 pounds of pressure on the line to get it on tight! Then we spool the mono on in 2 speed under very low pressure. That doesn't need to go on tight because it is about to get kayaked back out! (and you don't want to stretch the mono too much before use!)

    In the market for a 130.
    Looking at the Makaira 130 or the Avet 130.
    I see you dislike the Tiagra 130? Any opinion would be appreciated.

    • @GulfCoastNation
      @GulfCoastNation  3 роки тому

      Hey! We would recommend the tiagra 130 over the avet! We have owned 2 and both broke after 3 months.
      The only down side to the tiagra is you have to messed with the preset on the beach to get it to set right.
      The mak 130 would be one of your best options along with an alutecnos 130 or penn 130 st or vsw, although they can be tough to set as well

  • @bobbyh177

    so ya confused me a little on this... We adjust the one drag setting with the free spool on right but when u test the drag u test with it set to strike? so turn it on free spool, turn up the other drag, turn it on strike and check drag? If it's not where you want it then turn it on free spool, turn side drag up or down, put it back on strike and test again?

    • @GulfCoastNation
      @GulfCoastNation  3 роки тому +1

      To kind of simplify. You should only ever adjust your preset in freespool. But to test how much strike is, you have to put the lever at strike. BUT if you don't like the strike setting then you put it back in freespool first to adjust preset!

    What’s the fishing rod and reel for sharks 4-6 feet

    • @GulfCoastNation

      Start with a casting setup, 6500-9500. 65 pound braid and a 10-13ft casting rod.
      Its tough to target sharks just in a size class cause 10ft sharks come 40 yards off the beach too.

    I'll never understand how manufacturers can claim max drags that are way over what is possible. The Tsunami SaltX claims 50lb on a 4000 size reel. Yet your using some serious tackle and running 50+ lbs. I've got a few accurates capable of some heavy drag. No way a small spinning reel could ever hold up to that. I've noticed Accurate lowballs their figures a little bit as do some other big game reel manufacturers.
    Crazy how much drag you guys run. But like you've said it's critical to give the shark the best odds of survival. Glad you all fish heavy gear. Too many guys fishing old senators fighting sharks for hours!
