    I first heard this song I guess it's been 38 years ago. I must have gone to see this movie back then at least 10 times ... mostly to hear this song. After all these years, it haunts me still. It's been almost as many years that I put away singing and acting to make a living. Now that I'm old (69) I've picked up my very first string instrument ... a baritone ukulele my Mother bought me when I was in the 6th grade. This is the song I still remember -- and this is the song I'm learning. I don't sing any more - but surprisingly - one still can learn things, so I've been working on an instrumental arrangement on the Bari for this. It's a very complex and beautiful ballad and I'm not sure if I'll every master it -- but it is so lovely -- and it brings back so many memories of when Sally Field and I both were young. The world was so full of promise. Funny how time can steal so much of that. Glad to hear this again and remember. Thanks for putting this up.

      Haunted! Yes, that's the word for it. Only this week on You Tube I viewed and listened to every version on You Tube. Somehow, here's a song that gets better. Here's a song with sheer melody...something modern songwriters (well, they are writing chants, really) have forgotten about. Can recommend the Michael Crawford and Sarah Mann versions highly.

One of the greatest pop songs ever written, one of the greatest voices of all time and how it fits with the theme of the movie itself so well .... inspiring powerful stuff !!

    Only Jennifer sings this song like she has lived it. I've heard other's cover "so it goes like it goes", but there is no life or soul in how it's sung. Thank you Jennifer for all the beautiful sentiment and longing you put into each song I've ever heard you sing.

    I played this song at both of my parent's funeral services. Both children of the working class. Mom was brilliant but could not go to college for lack of funds. Dad was a union man for 50 years. "Bless the child of a workingman, she knows too soon who she is; Bless the hands of a workingman, he knows his soul is his."

    For the most part, I don't listen to country music, but when I sat for the final credits of this outstanding movie called "Norma Rae," as a man, I felt this song right down to my feet. It is probably one of the most beautiful country songs I have ever heard. It might also have catapulted Jennifer Warnes' career.

    "Maybe what's good gets a little bit better, and maybe what's bad get's gone...." Profound lyrics. I love how this song sounds like it plays backwards before it moves forward. Genius!
    This song won for best original song at the 1980 Oscars. Winning over two magnificent songs sung by Melissa Manchester--she still holds the record for the only artist to have two of her songs nominated for an Oscar on the same Oscar award night.

    I was a young girl when this movie came out. I remember watching with my mother; it was on HBO ("Home Box" back then). I didn't really understand it, but thinking back, I guess innately I knew it was profound. It impacted me because I never forgot about it. I recently watched it again (Hulu), as an adult this time, and now I understand why I was so drawn to it. Very powerful and poignant....

It won best original song at the Oscars. I would also say that another song from the movie Working Girl with Melanie Griffith had a fantastic song "Let the River Run" written and performed by Carly Simon. It also won for Best Original Song at the 1989 Oscars. Very uplifting and inspiring also.

    Many who were young in North America at the time of 'Norma Rae's' release heard this beautiful song and were struck by it, and David Shire, the composer, a lesser known trooper who slipped easily from the New York stage to Hollywood to orchestrating pop, was at last handsomely rewarded with an Oscar for his work. If only 'Best Song' winners today had this grace on a regular basis.
    As for Martin Ritt's film itself, it stands as a testament to the misunderstood and often derided 1970s: I can't imagine anyone today - not even Netflix, footing the bill for a story about a barely literate lower working class female southerner and a Jewish labour activist attempting to start a union in a greasy textile mill - maybe...if it were set in the costumed past, say, the 'ragtime'/menshavik era of 1905...or in another country [with subtitles!]...but in the [then] present day? - the idea seems like a bad investment...and there's all the difference between that oft presumed to be less enlightened time. The 70s were in no way perfect, and socially a great deal HAS improved since then, but now everything seems to be glazed in the 'slick'; the aesthetic of the truly shabby (except in select cases where racial divides are the focus) is avoided, even banished...and the idea that a struggling underclass is still the experience of a great many in the most technocratic of societies is quietly avoided.

    Thanks for posting. A great song and wonderful movie ("Norma Rae" about a real life hero Chrystal Lee Sutton) about a time and people that are too far gone. These were people who fought for what was right despite the possibility of harm to themselves. It’s a shame that we no longer recognize the sacrifices from those who helped make our middle class as we become part of history.

    • @PunchlineEverytime

      No, corporate greed leading to off-shoring heralded the death of the textile industry. Unions were/are just people trying to get a fair shake. If we had a government not bought by the rich, they'd have done something about it.

    • @dazieger
      @dazieger 3 роки тому +1

      It's a tough call, really. Certainly not a travesty.
      They're both perfect songs - the sheer craftsmanship behind them is breathtaking; and they're both profoundly moving in completely different manners and contexts. I think this song won on the strength of the lyric -- it communicates so much in so few words, whereas the lyric of Rainbow Connection, which is terrific, mind you, has a couple of slightly awkward phrases, is just a little less polished.
      It doesn't take anything away from the song, particularly in the context of a kids' movie (not that the standards for kids' movies should be lower, but because kids think a little awkwardly themselves. It's a perfect song for the film, and I have not a single gripe with it).
      Honestly, for my money, the best song in The Muppet Movie is "I'm Going to Go Back There Someday."
      "Connection" and "Goes" are two amazing songs that both deserved the Oscar nod. If pressed, I'd have gone with this one, but I would have agonized over it.

    • @dazieger
      @dazieger 3 роки тому +1

      Shane, the reason "It Goes Like it Goes" -- or any given song -- is not on iTunes has to do with rights and licensing and ownership and other legal matters. I assure you it's not lack of demand.
      I'm not even saying the demand for this song is as great as the demand for "Rainbow Connection" -- I'm sure it's not. But it has nothing to do with the quality of either song or, again, any song on iTunes or Spotify or any other streaming/sales platform. You'd
      be amazed how complex and tangled the ownership of film music in particular can get. It's a clusterf--k.

      Yeah, definitely one of the most glaring musical Oscar snubs. But what does the Academy know really?

    I like Jennifer Warnes, but I'm just gonna say that this is one of her weaker moments. The fact that this forgettable and dreary-sounding number won the Academy Award over superior songs like "Rainbow Connection" and "Through The Eyes Of Love" proved that even back then, the Academy was making questionable decisions. Besides, her later Oscar Winning duets "Up Where We Belong" and "(I've Had) The Time Of My Life" blow this one completely out of the water.

      I respectfully disagree. Although this song wasn't a mainstream commercial success as the others you cite, it's beauty and emotional impact packed a powerful punch.

    Problem with this catchy tune is that it's too red.
