  • This is the second in a series of conversations with Bunsei-san, a Soto-shu (Zen) Buddhist monk. His temple is called Jurenji (鷲連寺) and is in Hachimantai, Iwate. If you're in the area, you can visit his temple. He also is open to teaching mindfulness and Zen meditation classes by appointment.
    You can find the temple located here: goo.gl/maps/7C...

    I'd love to get Bunsei-san to go hiking, but not sure if I can get him to go up in the mountains with me. If we do another video in a month or so it will probably be more of a conversational style as we enjoyed that more. Thanks so much for watching! (Next video will be outdoors again.)

    Thank you once again for another good video. The words of Bunsei-san make so much sense in the world that we are living today.

    After you interrupted Bunsei-san as he talked about the 3rd instict you apologised. Was this only because you realized that you interrupted him or also because of the fact that you quostioned his statement? Ive heard that Japanese collectivism is so big that waiters often wont even tell you directly that all places are taken because it could be considered rude to let you down/disagree. Was this one of these situations?

    • @GoNorthJapan
      @GoNorthJapan  3 роки тому +6

      Well yeah- I felt like I interrupted him with basically a silly point. I also realized it wasn't really relevant whether or not chimps or bonobos had that same instinct.
      In my experience, waiters and restaurant staff are pretty direct when there's no place to sit. Of course they apologize and are very nice about it. Maybe certain regions of Japan vary in this regard.

      @@GoNorthJapan actually, as I was watching the video, I had the same thought at the same time. Only, I don't think it's limited just to the apes that are close to us evolutionarily. I have witnessed this across multiple animal species. Of course, that doesn't negate his primary point. :)

    Quinlan, this is such a valuable video from which to learn. Quite a number of scientific studies have shown that "multitasking" is counterproductive and inefficient, and the points Bunsei-san made about altruism redounding on benefits to all are also consistent. Thank you for sharing this video!

    Thank you to you both for your time in this video, great insight and sharing, loved it! Money has actually always sat a bit awkwardly with me, (I always put it in envelopes if paying in cash as it feels dirty somehow lol) and it's why I give away all my patterns for free, but it has a really strange side effect in other people around me as some people can get really angry, 'why arent you making more money' and 'you work so hard' etc etc as if I'm offending them somehow. It's well meaning, but some people are just wired to think that's the only way to happiness, but it's so not, anyway I waffle! Thank you again and looking forward to more with you 🙏

    • @GoNorthJapan
      @GoNorthJapan  3 роки тому +2

      That's great that you only have external voices asking you why you aren't making more money. I think many of us have little voices in our heads saying similar things if we aren't making anywhere near what our parents were at our age, etc.

      @@GoNorthJapan I guess it may be because my parents just had no money really, my Dad suffered a few breakdowns because of his work so the emphasis growing up became one of being mentally healthy over financial gain, for me at least, sadly my Dad never truly could accept the same thought process, believing he had failed in some way. Anyway that's a story for another day!

      I also have unique feelings about money compared to those around me. I grew up quickly learning not to ask for food, for example, because my mother always said groceries were too expensive. So at first (okay, for quite a while..), in adulthood, I would have panic attacks over my friends spending so much on things that weren't necessary, and I wouldn't be able to fill my cart with enough food while shopping for myself, etc. It felt wrong. I couldn't spend it. I couldn't buy anything that wasn't necessary food and nobody understood how I felt, they just wanted me to change.
      I'm more lenient now. I also consider one of the greatest advice pieces I ever learned to be that you can't take care of others if you don't take care of yourself. Sometimes I still see people being so selfless that they are even hurting those around them. So I always keep this in mind. It's not selfish to protect yourself, too. xx

    Hello Go North Japan (sorry, I don't know your real name). Thank you so much for making this video! It's exactly what I was looking for. If I get the chance to travel to Japan I would love to visit Bunsei-san at his temple to learn more. I'm working on a tech project that's meant to let people become more mindful of others in a more human way and the Japanese culture of mindfulness is at its core. Also, you have a very beautiful home. Have a great day and thank you for sharing this with the world!

      That brings back memories!! I lived in Minneapolis for about 3 years in the late 90s. I remember walking around Minehaha Falls from about 3am to just past dawn on multiple occasions. I really liked how you could walk behind the waterfall in that half-cave area. Really brings me back to being 19.
