“Nothing could possibly make up for the lack of secret communion with God.”
    -C.H. Macintosh
It is nonnegotiable that Moses’ encounter with God is one of the most astonishing moments in the history of humanity. God “comes down” (vs 8). It has been like a fountain of understanding, teaching us of God and His dealings with His man for thousands of years. One mystical mind sees this and the other sees that. A theologian finds this and another finds that. I want to chime in on the text of this encounter and call to our attention a few delicious truths I find to be deeply thrilling. I intend only to pick a few of the diamonds inside this treasure trove. I ask forgiveness for my omissions.
The first truth, I find as unavoidable as it is indispensable. The Scripture states, “Moses was pasturing the flock…” There is no mention of any other person with him. Hence, the first sparkle of the text is that Moses is alone. A private personal presence. Macintosh writes,
“God has had all His servants very much alone with Himself, both before and after their entrance upon their public work; nor will anyone get on without this. The absence of secret training and discipline will necessarily leave us barren, superficial and theoretic.”
    He continues,
“In the desert God will teach…None can teach like God, and all who learn of Him must be alone with Him.”
As we look at the life of Moses we find that the time he spent in private was nearly ten times as long as that which he spent in public.
Another point of interest for me is that God had manifested Himself. “The angel of the Lord appeared…” Moses’ part was giving attention to the fact that God had already appeared. This shows us that all finding of God is a result of God having already appeared to us. Could it be that this text teaches us that in being alone with God we experience God by giving attention to the fact that God has already appeared in Jesus Christ. May we cherish this holy fact, while being separated from men to be with God, He has appeared.
Another point of intrigue for me is that what Moses saw alone with God far exceeded anything he ever saw in the highest places of the world. All the learning, riches and fame of Egypt could never compare to the Divine Speaking Flame in solitude. May we be ever convinced that the glories of Christ far outweigh all the wealth of the world. As David Brainerd once wrote,
“An hour with God infinitely excels all the pleasures and delights of this lower world.”
Another point of attraction in this encounter is that it notes, “when the Lord saw that he turned aside.” This seems to carry the notion that God was watching and waiting for attention. Oh that our hearts would feel this truth. He is watching to see how we will respond to His presence. He is waiting for attention. As Tozer brilliantly states,
    “He waits to be wanted.”
The next valuable note is that Moses’ “turning aside” means that he turned away from everything else to give attention to God’s presence. In this moment, the heat of the sun, the sound of the sheep, the center of self were behind him. He faced the Living Flame. Oh that we would practice this turning from everything inferior to Christ the superior. Macintosh writes,
“Everything is set aside save the stillness and light of the divine presence…this is the place all must go to be educated for ministry; and there must all must remain if they would succeed in ministry.”
It is touching to notice that God then, after attention is given, speaks directly to Moses. Here is how we hear the Lord, turning our ear from all else to Him. Communion begins at attention to His presence. It is heart melting to see that God says his name. This communion is personal. He then says his name again to show that communion is paramount.
The last point I mean to emphasize in this short article is that Moses responds to God with, “Here I am.” To me this shows us the sweet summary. Part of our communion with the Lord is presenting ourselves to Him. We respond to the Lord by presenting ourselves to the Lord.
Alone with God, we recognize his presence, knowing His presence trumps all the treasures of the world. We realize that He is watching and waiting for us to give attention to His presence by turning away from everything else to Him. Here He speaks to us both personal and paramount and we simply respond by presenting ourselves to Him.
