@22:00 The Dizonite torture sound is perhaps the most chilling concept I've seen in a while because, as you mentioned, the Empire committed this terrible crime and recorded just as a banal administrative "record of completion". Then they realized it was useful and weaponized it. But then Dr Gorst, as a character makes this so much more terrifying. He's not physically imposing or scary looking. You have this seemingly polite, mild-mannered, and sort of nerdy character but he's describing in glee and fascination how this thing works from a scientific and procedural standpoint, completely ignoring or dismissing the awfulness from a moral standpoint. As someone who's had to take some "ethics in science/engineering" courses, that to me is the most terrifying things- an Empire that sees every interaction as "How can we make this accomplish our goals" as the only and bottom line.

Damn, Denise Gough is so good at face acting. Her expressions toward Bix is awesome acting. When Syril accosted her, the expressions that flashed across her face: Surprise, fear, disgust, anger, uncertainty...masterful.
The PORD greatly increased the number of incoming prisoners as well as extending the sentences of the current prisoners. The prisons suffered a tremendous sudden prison population increase. I don't think merely transferring prisoners was normal operation, I think that resulted in either an error or a calamitous _ad hoc_ solution. Then they panicked.
Dedra made a positive statement about Syril to his Bureau of Standards leadership. That leadership, having gotten a message from the ISB (unusual as hell for the Bureau of Standards), believe they must certainly do _something_ in response...they can't simply ignore contact by the ISB. So, they promote Syril.
This is such a wonderfully written and acted series. Love your discussion and reaction.

The Empire and its inner workings have been showcased in a level of detail I didnt think was possible for Disney. Torture using the cries of alien children, hagging a man for show, staging murders. This depiction makes the Empire scarier than ever before.

And now we don't want Dedra to win. The cat and mouse game really begins. Poor Bix. For me Syril is the dark humor of the series. The conversations with his mom are great and show the difference in upbringing between her and Maarva. The sipping from the bowl cracked me up. We see that Cassian has been busy for his past 30 shifts. Note that Vel, who, holy cow, was Mon's cousin was crazy, echoed what Cinta told her. It's almost like Vel isn't really into the rebellion and just trying to convince herself. I thought for sure she was Luthen's daughter the way he said "LOOK AT ME!" in their meeting on Aldhani. Actually, how they can escape is very important. They just needed a reason to get everyone else on board. And they just got it. It's gonna be a fun time next episode!

    • @colleybri8912
      @colleybri8912 4 дні тому +1

I love that early scene that suggests that Cassian is becoming a bit like Kino - excited at the idea that they can “take the shift” and get flavour with their food. We might think he’s given up and accepted imprisonment. Then we find out just how busy he’s been … with the pipe and plotting with Birnok. Brilliant writing.

The contrast between Cassian and Syril’s mothers succinctly tells you all you need to know about their respective sides and perspectives on the Universe. For Maarva, love is unconditional while for Eedy love is transactional. Likewise, it informs how they find romantic partners (for Cassian, intimacy is easy; for Syril, intimacy is unsettling and has an element of possessiveness). Just great writing.

Dedra is the scariest Imperial we've had since the originals. That eye twitch. Bix 😢 has GREAT acting.
    Andor: no one is listening
Rogue One: think anyone is listening?
Karns infatuation with Dedra is less romantic and mostly that she is EVERYTHING he wants to be. Yes some romantic but mostly idolizing what she represents.
Empire is scary, just casually plotting a staged death.
They don't intentionally put them there, they were supposed to be transferred to something like the spice mines. Here you need people with hope because they're building important items. Once the sentence is up you send them to a labor camp or somewhere that you can just beat them into submission.
"Never more than 12." That line alone has more gravitas than rest of Disney Wars.

One of the amazing things this show does is show how really fucking *evil* the Empire really is. Nothing with grandiose notions of "good vs. evil" you see play out in the Jedi and Sith dyad, but simply how fascist, how morally bankrupt the Empire is, how it oppresses those it subjugates. Especially after PORD is implemented, literally *anything* could be used to drag you in front of a magistrate. Talk about living on your knees.

One thing that the show does as a great very important setup is that Dr Gorsk’s interrogation technique is VERY effective so we know if any characters end up in the ISB’s hands, they’ll get info out of them. It sets up the stakes very well

Agreed. It automatically ups the stakes and makes the already competent empire MUCH scarier...
Gotta admit tho. Kinda scared for continuity as this method isn't continued in the OT (of course it isn't, they added it here)...hope they account for it not becoming one of the main ways of interrogation by the end of Season 2 since it is very efficient at getting info without risk of "injury".

It’s not a perfect solution, but I could accept that as enough of an attention to detail to tie it off.

IMO probably the best SciFi series ever. Better than Babylon 5, BSG and Fire Fly. Known by some as the Game of Thrones in space. Great writing, storytelling, acting, and a plot that unfolds that you won't see coming. Syril and Deirde, to me, represent the slow slide into acceptance of fascism. Syril is obsessed with his ideals of law and order, he took pride in his place in the system, shown by his customized uniform, but his ideals are divorced from morality. His anger and obsession with the murders Cassian committed wasn't because men died, it was because someone killed officers and wasn't going to be punished, it offended his ideals of how the world should work. His supervisor’s refusal to act was the first crack in his world view, and his acting anyway was him clinging to the idea that the system wasn't broken, the problem was just his superior. He fails, gets fired and punished by the system he thought he was fighting for, and everything falls apart. Then he meets Deidre, a representation of The System that actually cares about catching Cassian, who comes to embody the ideals of law and order within The Empire he'd always held dear. She is a fascist monster, but that doesn't matter because morality was never a factor for him. He's willing to enthusiastically embrace fascism so long as it is lawful, ordered, structured fascism.

When in doubt - choose "Yennefer! :) #TeamYen
She plays Yennefer of Vengerburg in one the very best ever videogames - Witcher 3 ... a beautiful, but sarcastic, unlikeable witch ... you get to choose whether to fall in love with her or not during the 100 hours of gameplay ... or do you choose the much more friendlier, freedom-fighting witch, Triss Merigold?
I choose Yen every time - because she has a heart of gold hidden underneath the ascerbic facade - and the way Denise plays her makes it impossible, for me at least, not to fall head-over-heels in love
I had no intention of watching Andor (probably some more Disney kiddie nonsense) .. until I heard that Denise was in it as an imperial officer
As I admired her voice-acting a lot, I wanted to see what her face looked like - and chose to watch the whole show from the beginning, even though I read that she doesn't appear until episode 4 [I had no idea she was a main character]. I'm so glad I didn't just skip to her scenes ...
My story mirrors Andor's plot - how something completely unrelated to Star Wars (like most of this comment! - sorry)
... led to me wanting to take down the Empire
(I'll just have to settle for the Tories on July 4th)

I don't think that Syril is "shooting his shot". I don't think he's in love with Dedra, she's just the only person who (in his mind) has recognized his drive/wants as well as someone who (he believes) is taking the search for Andor just as seriously as him. He thinks she's the only person who has the same level of commitment and love for the Empire as him, rather than him being in love with her or something.

Imagine that one of the seven facilities that we saw when Cassian was first brought to Narkina are where the "dead-end" prisoners are transferred to. Or somewhere worse. At that point, the Empire doesn't care if the prisoners know it's just a game, but they also aren't given freedom of movement or expected to produce important products efficiently either.
So, just like an American prison.

    • @parsa1372
      @parsa1372 4 дні тому +5

Imma address the show itself and the next step after it.
Sending the "released" prisoner to the same complex, but just another floor was a mistake, a logistic error. That made the news spread, they didn't have enough resources to contain it, so they burned the whole bridge to keep it quiet.
Empire wants slaves for the "project" but has limited resources and cannot have every prison to the max security to contain them. So only the people "released" will get sent there and at that point it doesn't matter much if they try to riot. They are slaves.
The rest of the prisoners who aren't slaves yet (which are MAGNITUDES more) can be more docile cause they still hope they will be released. So they wont need that much resources (never more than 12 guards on each level)
      So the cog keeps turning.
Much of this is not explicit. But the show doesn't contradict it and i argue it is very reasonable for it to work this way. At least that's how i would've done it if i was a dictator :)
