Signs of Spring But not Trout

  • It was an optimistic drive past Abergavenny, the Cherry blossom was out and many of the trees were in their early leaf green.
As I drove on up the valley of the Usk spring slowly rolled back and by the time I crossed over in to the Wye valley it was obvious that it does take about two weeks for spring to make it over the Epynt and in to Wye.
There were still some signs of spring though so it was well worth a fish.
The early season in Mid Wales is an interesting time to fish, the briefest of hatches can bring good fish up, although at other times you’d swear there wasn’t a living thing the whole river.
The valley of this particular stream is quite narrow and quite steep so it takes a while for the warming sun to have an effect.
I was surprised and pleased to see nymphs moving in the margins and birds starting to mark their territories with song.
A few small Olives hatched around mid day but the trout remained dormant.
I suspect that will change very soon when it does the river is looking in fine condition and I’ll look forward to being back on that beat.
I fished a 7ft 4wt cane rod with a 3ft mono furled leader then about 3ft of 5 pound mono going down to 2ft of 3 pound for the tippet.

How lovely to see some nymphs on the stones and a cracking little Wren bustling about👍

When I saw those nymphs I thought it was going to be on. If the nymphs are moving the trout can't be far behind.

lovely to see you back on the river Luke. i enjoyed the shot of the Jenny Wren. A very slow start for us all I fear. Hopefully things will pick up before too long. Keep them coming

Thank You Peter, that Wren did not sit still...
Warming up now, after the wet spring I'm hoping the warm weather will bring the Mayfly on.

Hi Robert. Glad your season has got off to a good start, it has been slow here. That last pool is a beauty, there were a few fly about and I thought it was on... I got the feeling it would be in a day or two, next time...

Hi Luke, nice to see you back on the water, I am feeling the cold badly at present but did manage to get out a week ago and some fly life about but no sign of fish so put on spiders and had a 1.5 lb brown so very pleased with that, looking forward to your next video. ATB Mike

Thanks Mike, it was good to get out, can't belive that was my first trip. It's been such a long cold (and wet) spring.
A 1.5 pound fish is a very good start to the seson, hope it carries on like that.

Great video, could just listen to the audio to feel like I am on the river. Only a month until my local rivers open.

Glad you enjoyed it. And things start to warm up for you.
We've finally got better weather now, and the trout are starting to move.

Seems to be all over. Spring has quite reached to deep valleys. I only travel 45 mins. up into the hills and the change is dramatic.

@@bannisterrods It is. Flowers that have faded at home were at their best in the hills.
