The song was inspired by the futuristic short story "A Nice Morning Drive", written by Richard Foster and published in the November 1973 issue of Road & Track magazine. The story describes a similar future in which increasingly stringent safety regulations have forced cars to evolve into massive Modern Safety Vehicles (MSVs), capable of withstanding a 50-mile-per-hour (80 km/h) impact without injury to the driver. Consequently, drivers of MSVs have become less safety-conscious and more aggressive, and "bouncing" (intentionally ramming) the older, smaller cars is a common sport among some. Rush drummer and lyricist Neil Peart made several attempts to contact Foster during the recording of but did not have an up-to-date address and Rush were forced to settle for a brief "inspired by" note in the lyric sheet mentioning the story. In July 2007, Foster and Peart finally made contact with each other. Foster later posted on his website an account of their journey by motorcycle through the backwoods of West Virginia between stops on Rush's 2007 Snakes and Arrows tour. Barchetta literally means "small boat" in Itallian, is the diminutive form of ("boat" or "craft"). In the automotive industry, the term is used for a two-seat car without any kind of roof. The proper Italian pronunciation is (bar ketta), although it is sung with /t/ in place of /k/ by Geddy Lee Neil Peart's favorite car was the 1948 Ferrari 166MM. Lyrics explained: The song's lyrics tell a story set in a future in which many classes of vehicles have been banned by a "Motor Law." The narrator's uncle has kept one of these now-illegal vehicles (the titular red Barchetta sports car) in pristine condition for roughly 50 years and is hiding it at his secret country home, which had been a farm before the Motor Law was enacted. Every Sunday, the narrator commits a "weekly crime" of sneaking out to this location and going for a drive in the countryside. During one such drive, he encounters a "gleaming alloy air car" that begins to chase him along the roads. A second such vehicle soon joins the pursuit, which continues until the narrator drives across a one-lane bridge that is too narrow for the air cars. The song ends with the narrator returning safely to his uncle's farm. Source: Wikipedia

Heard Rush for the first time in 1977. I had tears watching this vid even though I’ve heard that song a thousand times… perhaps hidden memories, or perhaps because it is still so good! Loved watching you two experience it for the first time.
One of my favorite songs from Rush. We had an old Jeep wagoneer that my dad used for hunting. When he sold it i was so angry because I had told him when I was able to drive I would love to drive it. I was about 8 or 10 at the time. I can still remember the smell of the jeep.
Thank you guys... keep bringing the RUSH content. I like watching Asia trying to count with the off beat/ time signature changes.. these guys make music you have to hear multiple times to really get the sense. And of course to have 3 of the best musicians in the same band is just magic. Maybe you can react to Middletown dreams or Headlong Flight, noone really does " newer" rush reactions. BJ captured the sentiment of the song perfectly. It's more about the roads you can race across, even if they're in your imagination. It's about the exuberance of youth and the special relationship the narrator has with that old car and his uncle. I used to dream about racing a car when I was a boy when too young to actually do it. It's a very relatable song.
Hard to believe that, that much music comes out of 3 guys! If you guys haven't seen a video of them live really cool to see . Must see!!!!! One of my favorite bands.

Seen rush in concert in OKC shotly after their album Moving Pictures was released. Many great tracks including this one on it. RIP Neil Peart, one of the greatest drumers to sit behind a kit. Back in the day when sons went off to fight in the vietnam war and where KIA, they left their cars with their folks on the farm who stored them in the barn hence a barn find. One of my favourite Rush songs ❤️❤️❤️ I think you would like Circumstances Entre Nous Speed of Love ( one of their few love songs) for Asia The Trees Cheers
The song tells a fictional story of a dystopian future when motor vehicles have been outlawed. The narrator is describing how he would sneak out of the city, to the countryside where his uncle still had an old outlawed motor vehicle that they would drive illegally. The chase at the end is describing some future law enforcement vehicle / robot that tries to chase him down when they catch him driving the illegal car. It's a great song, thanks for sharing!
Neil really was able to see into the future. The Red Barchetta is actually a 2010 Kia Forte Koup like I have. But on a more serious note, Neil's kick drum through the entire song is probably the best overall single composition of his catalogue. The alternating kick / snare flurry at 633 launches just some absolute monstrous jamming on his part through to the guitar harmonics. The reason the entire song rocks and flows as it does it because they played live in the studio, looking at each other. They'd been on the road for 6 years at that time so they knew each other as players, so in the studio they wrote and arranged through endless jams, building the songs. This song does not exist if they tried to write it like they did in later years, separately in different rooms fuqing around with Pro Tools. They couldn't pull off La Villa in one take, but the album version of Red Barchetta is a single take, recorded on Dec 8. Geddy recalls coming out of the studio and going to get a coffee and hearing on the TV that John Lennon had been shot earlier that evening. They were never the same after they parted ways with Broon.
Asia, irrespective of the length of any song on Rush’s MOVING PICTURES album, they r all worth a listen. Best album Rush ever recorded. To have every song be as as good as the previous and next, is difficult but the boys did it.
No such thing as a best Rush album, this was their most commercially successful but Hemispheres was more technically difficult and 2112 their most iconic. My personal favorite is Permanent Waves but never would I try to tell someone that it's the best they ever recorded, some people like their hard rock Peartless first album while others will tell you their last, Clockwork Angels is Rush at their finest it's all in the eye of the beholder or rather the ear of the listener. That said Moving Pictures is a monster of a record and I never get tired of hearing it.
The Barchetta was a car manufactured by Ferrari in the early 60's, don't know if earlier. It's tubular design was what made this car unique. It did come loaded with ponies under it's hood (like all Ferrari machinery). Neil was brilliant in constructing his lyrics to the brief history of this car. Finding it in his grandfather's garage, like a diamond 💍 in the rough, cleaning it up, and LETTING IT RUN WILD on the road, is brilliant and so tastefully done...... Give a SINGLE SONG over the last 30 years that is equally constructed. ONE??????? I can give you a few HUNDRED from the 70's! Greatest decade in music! Unequivocally..........

In the late 80's I had a red 1970 Chevy Chevelle 454 that I used to cruise the neighborhood in and the rich kids with the newer cars (and the Philly police) would chase me, but never caught me. Your review bring those days back to me! A Barchetta is a "style of a car, not a make. Ferrari, Fiat, Maserati all made Barchettas. Great review!
The barchetta has full-width enveloping bodywork, in contrast to an early spider corsa, which may have cycle or wing fenders.[2] Later (non-corsa) spiders added more heavily padded seats, interior carpeting and a full windshield, items not found in the more spartan barchette.[4] Some later cars still called barchette were more well-appointed, following the trend of the later spiders and convertibles.
Funny you listen to Rush and the Who in the same few hours. Two bands that unfairly had the best rhythm sections in rock. Keith Moon of the Who was especially a huge inspiration to drum for Peart
The first car to be called a barchetta was a Ferrari 166 MM shown at the 1948 Turin Auto Show.[5][6] The car was designed by Federico Formenti at Carrozzeria Touring.[7] Giovanni Canestrini, editor of the Italian sporting newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, applied the term to describe the new car's original bodystyle.[6] The name barchetta has been associated with the open 166MM model ever since.[5]
Barchetta, was an Italian company that took hi-perfomance cars me by other companies like Ferrarie and the put their own body and interiors on the car. I'm sure there were also some perfomrance updates included.
Barchetta, pronounced (bar-ketta) is an italian term for a small boat, a skiff. In french it would be "barque" (bark). Ferrari had his first car leave the Maranello factory in 1947 and it was a red, V12-engined Barchetta, model 166 MM.
In this futuristic song, the Motor Law banned cars. His rebel uncle had an Italian sports car hidden under trash in the barn that the kid would get to take out once a week, or his “weekly crime”.
The Fiat Barchetta (Italian pronunciation: [ˈfiːat barˈketta]; Type 183) is a roadster produced by the Italian manufacturer Fiat from 1995 to 2006. Barchetta in Italian means "little boat", and also denotes a type of open-top sports car body style.
I also believe that the uncle has passed and lives spiritually through the red barchetta and returns back to the farm to be at home by the fireside represents being at peace within yourself. Great song RIP Niel Peart
A Red Barchetta is a convertible Ferrari 166A built between 1948 and 1953. It had a 2 litre V-12 engine. It would likely sell for more than 1.5 million dollars today. They were $9000 in 1949.

It's incredible to think this came from 3 musicians I've had a serious love affair with this band from the age of 12 and I'm 57 they are truly the Mozart of rock and Mr Lee is booming on bass
Appreciate you 🙏 ✌️
Although I love all types and variety of music, I have to say Rush is my favourite band and why I took up drumming. You both are such a joy to watch, thanks for reacting to this great music.
I saw the tour for this album! (Moving Pictures) At the Civic Arena (different name now) My seat was dead center, as far away as you could get! I could touch the roof with my hands! Amazing show! 😎✌❤
Love you guys and you're reactions. I'm really struck by the last few bars of this song, masters at play, just simple variations for a perfect fade out. So good.
Off the 'Moving Pictures' album, one of those cassettes i would listen to from beginning to end, sometimes 2, 3, 4 times in a row, on a Walkman, while riding my bike, back in the day. I'm glad y'all got to hear this one, a lot of people have never heard this song.
4 times is about as many as you will get before the walkman eats the tape!
Rush is in my top 3 favorite rock bands.🥰Love ya'll!
BJ knows bout it...........Neil Peart the drummer, wrote ALL the lyrics for all RUSH songs...........
Everytime I listen to this, I seriously have no idea how Geddy is able to play all those intricate bass riffs while singing. Simply amazing.
This is one of the greatest driving songs ever.🔥🎧
2112 one of the greatest albums ever written and performed. An iconic masterpiece ..
The drummer and Lyricist also owned a few vintage Ferrari’s.
In this song, motor cars are outlawed in the future. The storyteller would take his very old uncle’s Ferrari Barchetta car out for the ultimate joy ride!
You could get some pretty good deals on a muscle car back then. Not much out their anymore as far as barn finds go. Peace
What a TREAT! This song grows on you. If you're a car guy or girl, WOW! In the beginning his uncle has preserved for him an old machine....
Watch them perform this. It is an adventure.
YOu just heard 1 of the top 5 bands of ALL - TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The "Red Barchetta" was a post WWII Ferrari. A Beautiful car made from 1948 to 1950.
FYI a red barchetta is a V12 Ferarri
Muchas gracias chicos por este gran tema...saludos desde Chile 🤘🇨🇱🇨🇱🇨🇱♥️
Red Barchetta = #7 on my all time top-ten list.
It’s always fun to see someone enjoy this for the first time has that experience cannot be relived
this is probably the millionth listen for me as this is one of my favorite songs
the more you get into the story and the more you can anticipate the music the more you love it
I was a bit surprised that they didn’t comment on the music tempo chords time changes etc.
Asia: "Sounds like cheese". BJ: "You disrespecting the Bro Code" You guys are the best.
The Red Barchetta was one of the early cars built by Ferrari circa 1950 that stunned international racing
The Red Barchetta, an amazing race car and song by an amazing band named Rush. Like the song and the car, it takes you to a place where you are in the moment and nothing else seems to matter. Both were meant to be enjoyed for it's beauty and purpose, enjoy the moment. Always enjoy life and stay free. Just don't get caught!!!
Really would love to see you both react to their songs: "Subdivisions" and "Superconductor." They are a few of my favorites and they both have a cool sound. MMmmm I want a piece of BarChedda now.
His gray haired uncle preserved it for him. Now its his time to enjoy it
One of my favourite Rush songs ❤️❤️❤️
I think you would like Circumstances
Entre Nous
Speed of Love ( one of their few love songs) for Asia
The Trees
Cheers
The song tells a fictional story of a dystopian future when motor vehicles have been outlawed. The narrator is describing how he would sneak out of the city, to the countryside where his uncle still had an old outlawed motor vehicle that they would drive illegally. The chase at the end is describing some future law enforcement vehicle / robot that tries to chase him down when they catch him driving the illegal car. It's a great song, thanks for sharing!
Their best tune.
Good to see folks explained the song to you. One of my top 5 favorite Rush songs. Hope you guys explore more of their stuff.
If you haven't already listened to Vital Signs, you should!! I think it's the best song on the album...see what you think.
Rush was amazing! This might be my fav song of theirs. I love the lyrics and the story it tells.
Good description. The motor law, as the song says, appears to be on it's way. Who knows if the internal combustion engine will become illegal, but we'll be getting cooked in electric cars.
One of my favorite Rush songs!
Check out their song 'The Trees'.... it is timely, even today....
RusH is composed of 3 compulsive perfectionist, and genuine good people that do not have any the ego trips that have lead to the demise of many successful bands.
Truly GREAT musicians that are also truly great friends.... Resulting in some of the cleanest, tightest most amazing music ever made.
Incredible song!
This song live and in person is unbelievable!!
Thank you for doing Rush. They've been my #1 since 1978 (along with UFO).
love your reactions, nice couple.its a car song, a classic.like hiway star or turbo lover from judas priest,i suggest the analog kid from signals.you gonna have chills asia, the lyrics fit whit the music, musical genius,🤟
"Working Man Live from Cleveland!!"
when it's referred with a car (it can mean many things from a small boat to food packaging) it's a 2 seat convertible
I was hoping you guys would get to this song.
More Canadian rock! Thank you! 🎸🇨🇦🔥
This song holds the world record for the most drum changes in a song. We all miss you Neal.
3 geniuses and this album Moving Pictures…..I saw this tour live…didn’t sit down for more than 5 minutes.❤️🎼❤️
My favorite RUSH cut''''''''''''''' RED BARCHETTA
Hello. Earlier today was watching their tragedies of all three of them. 🎸💙🎶🥁
Funny you listen to Rush and the Who in the same few hours. Two bands that unfairly had the best rhythm sections in rock. Keith Moon of the Who was especially a huge inspiration to drum for Peart
How can U not Smile when U listen to Rush. And the story is so good. Moving Pictures is a complete masterpiece with something for everyone.
The first car to be called a barchetta was a Ferrari 166 MM shown at the 1948 Turin Auto Show.[5][6] The car was designed by Federico Formenti at Carrozzeria Touring.[7] Giovanni Canestrini, editor of the Italian sporting newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, applied the term to describe the new car's original bodystyle.[6] The name barchetta has been associated with the open 166MM model ever since.[5]
One of the world's best three man bands 10 out of 10.
I have a VERY willing 68 Ford Galaxie 390 fastback chillin in my garage! lol ....so I can relate to this song lol
Barchetta, was an Italian company that took hi-perfomance cars me by other companies like Ferrarie and the put their own body and interiors on the car. I'm sure there were also some perfomrance updates included.
I seen these guys 2 times and was amazed that 3 instruments could make the sound they make
Barchetta, pronounced (bar-ketta) is an italian term for a small boat, a skiff. In french it would be "barque" (bark).
Ferrari had his first car leave the Maranello factory in 1947 and it was a red, V12-engined Barchetta, model 166 MM.
Barchetta is an Italian sports car
In this futuristic song, the Motor Law banned cars. His rebel uncle had an Italian sports car hidden under trash in the barn that the kid would get to take out once a week, or his “weekly crime”.
1948 Ferrari 166 MM Barchetta 0038M - sold for $3,080,000 One of three 1950 Touring Barchettas originally built with one door.
Asia and Bj - This song was done in ONE take in the studio when they recorded it !
This was the song that got me hooked on Rush so many decades ago
The Fiat Barchetta (Italian pronunciation: [ˈfiːat barˈketta]; Type 183) is a roadster produced by the Italian manufacturer Fiat from 1995 to 2006. Barchetta in Italian means "little boat", and also denotes a type of open-top sports car body style.
Love anything by Rush!!
This is on the second.side of 2112. A great album !!
I also believe that the uncle has passed and lives spiritually through the red barchetta and returns back to the farm to be at home by the fireside represents being at peace within yourself.
Great song
RIP Niel Peart
A Red Barchetta is a convertible Ferrari 166A built between 1948 and 1953. It had a 2 litre V-12 engine. It would likely sell for more than 1.5 million dollars today. They were $9000 in 1949.
great song 🎵 rhythm...i think of riding my motorcycle through the roads through woods and hills ❤
