    Big Bear Lake is located in the San Bernardino Mountains and is an easy drive from most areas in southern California. It is about 93 miles northeast of Los Angeles, an approximate 2 hour, and 10 minute drive depending on traffic and road conditions. From Beverly Hills it is approximately a 2 hour, 20 minute drive and from the City of San Bernardino (29 miles) - depending on traffic it is a 40 to 45 minute drive up the mountain.
    There are three roads that lead in and out of the Big Bear Valley.
    Front way: If you are driving on the I-10 or the CA-210 Freeways you can choose between the CA-330 which becomes the CA-18 through Running Springs and Deer Lick or proceed towards Redlands and take the CA-38 through Mentone.
    CA-38 usually has less traffic, but the CA-330 is quicker. On busy weekends and during snow storms CA-38 may be a better choice.
    There is some confusion about the CA-18 which starts at Running Springs and continues into Big Bear Lake. When you arrive at the bridge over the Big Bear Lake Dam, the CA-18 continues straight ahead and this section of the road is called CA-18/Big Bear Blvd. This dual name continues through the Town of Big Bear Lake past the Stanfield Cut-Off towards Big Bear City, and when you reach Greenway the CA-18 turns left on Greenway and then turns right where it becomes just the CA-18 again. It then continues down the back side of the mountain to Lucerne.
    Some people prefer to take the back road because the drive out of the mountain is shorter. To go this way, take the CA-18 to Lucerne and then go west towards Hesperia until you reach Bear Valley Road. Take the Bear Valley Road until you reach the 1-15 South.
    All the roads leading to Big Bear offer some pretty spectacular vistas, especially CA-330/CA-18 - there are numerous turn-outs where you can stop to enjoy the different views, on a clear day you can see all the way to the ocean. Other views are picture perfect with layers of mountains that look amazingly like a background in a Da Vinci painting.
    On the way to Big Bear you will pass through the town of Running Springs, and then Deer Lick. Shortly after that you will pass by the Snow Valley Ski and Snowboard Resort. Approximately 11 miles later you will arrive at the traffic light at Big Bear Lake Dam, continue straight ahead over the new bridge for Big Bear Lake or turn left onto North Shore Drive if you are staying in Fawnskin.
    When travelling to the mountains in the winter months, you are required to carry chains even if it isn't snowing at the time (if Highway Patrol stops you and you don’t have chains you will be asked to turn around and purchase them before you return). If it is snowing there will be police road blocks set up on the highway and they will make you pull over and put your chains on. If you have 4-wheel drive and mud & snow rated tires they will look in your car to make sure you have chains but probably won't require you put them on. Don’t forget to keep a flashlight, water, snacks and extra blankets in the car - just in case there is a traffic delay due to a storm.

    The original Big BearDam was built by men in the days of wagon drivers and twenty mule teams. My Dad’s grandfather, Alex Henderson, was one of those twenty mule team drivers who drove the wagon loads of cement from Colton up the Cushing grade to Crestline, then across the Rim to Big Bear to build that first dam. Holcomb Valley and gold was discovered by Dad’s cousin’s great great grand dad. Bill Holcomb. And his cousin, Bill Holcomb was Dad’s cousin. Dad was Don Henderson who owned Timberlane Homes, Inc. in Running Springs for many years. Other Henderson’s were once Mayor and Alex was on the first Fire Dept. of San Bernardino. Others were on first Sheriff and then Police Dept’s. As well. Lots of history of both Mtns. And the Valley, from first Wagon train days . Lots of wonderful memories today! Thanks for your video!

    Home sweet home! Raised there from the mid 1940’s to the mid 80’s then back in the late 80’s to early 90’s. Up often to care for property until sold to Lulu Bell’s Bakery/ Coffee shop. Sure miss it, but not chains and digging out and crazy drivers! Please be careful ! The life you save may be yours, your family’s or one of my old friend’s! 🤗

      You're welcome this is the 330 hwy route and we are working on the 38 hwy route from the past storm which is a bit longer but less curves and less traffic, carry your chains and have a safe travel.

      @@CaliforniaPlaces one question I saw that there are zones for installation of the Chains. Will I also see areas to remove the chains once up by BB or GVL?

    • @CaliforniaPlaces
      @CaliforniaPlaces  2 роки тому

      Yes the installation area is always stablished by the snow chains check point before go up, and to remove it when you go down is up to you but usually is passing the check point....if you drive AWD car , truck or suv and is not too much snow on the road is ok to drive without chains BUT on our experience always install them and keep it all the time, some streets are not clean from snow as the main roads/hwy and are very slippery and you will see cars stuck or crashed and you'll feel better to not be you.

    Going in March for a honeymoon will snow chains be required? How’s the drive during winter months?

    • @CaliforniaPlaces
      @CaliforniaPlaces  2 роки тому +1

      Hi congrats! by March maybe still snowing, be prepared with chains cause the snow chech point up there, the only way that is not necessary to use them is if the last snow was 1 week before, by that time all the roads up there are very narrow cause snow on the sides and in some drive points the snow in the asphalt is thick and snow trucks can't remove it at all so is icy and slippery..keep checking the weather all the time but it stressing to think .
      SOLUTION: We highly recommend you to buy your chains, install it in your house 2 or 3 times in the nice weather (practice, practice) and drive the car around the block so you'll feel how is to drive with chains and what speed (usually 25-30 mph) Up there just install it drive wherever you want.... you'll see a lot cars stuck on the roads cause they think it wasn't necessary.... Enjoy your honeymoon!

    What is the max. speed after installing chains?

    • @CaliforniaPlaces
      @CaliforniaPlaces  3 роки тому +1

      25-30 mph if you do more it's very noisy in your car or you can damage your tires or body car, use turn outs to let other cars to pass you, no worries about other drivers speed, trust me you will have a secure drive and enjoyable trip than those who don't use chains.

      We don't recommend install chains before snow check point cause after that drive is 25-30 mph to slow for a long hill, carry your chains and at the check point there are always some nice guys that they can install it for you $$$

    • @CaliforniaPlaces

      For this reasons:
      - Cause you can't drive more that 25-30 Mph on Highway or Freeways
      - it feels very bumpy
      - you can damage your car or truck
      - not sure if its illegal but police or highway patrol can stop you if you're far from snow areas driving with snow chains
