  • We stayed at the Wanoyado Hotel Iyaonsen in Miyoshi City, Tokushima Prefecture.
Iya Valley / Iyakei is said one of the three most unexplored regions in Japan. Along with Shirakawa-go in Gifu Prefecture and Shiiba Village in Miyazaki Prefecture, Iya Valley is a remote area where the Iya River has created a V-shaped valley over the years. The legend of the Heike clan's fugitives gives this place an even more mysterious atmosphere.
Hotel Iya Onsen is the only member inn in Shikoku of Japan Association of Secluded Hot Spring Inns. Iya Valley is gradually becoming famous not only in Japan but also around the world, and travelers from all over the world gather at this luxurious inn in this remote area.
We take an attractive cable car and descend a 42-degree cliff for about 5 minutes. The valley, which has been called Furnotani - Valley of Onsen, is home to the finest hot springs. The alkaline simple sulfur spring, which has a faint smell of hydrogen sulfide, creates fine bubbles when poured from the spout, and is characterized by the skin-beautifying effects of the alkali, the texture of the carbonated spring, and the mysterious bathing sensation of being able to experience all of the sulfur spring water in a lukewarm bath. I have been to many hot springs, but this bathing sensation felt like nothing else I have ever experienced before.
On the other hand, Sora no Yu in the main building of the hotel has a mild alkaline hot spring with little hydrogen sulfide smell due to heating. And above all, the panoramic bath with the Iya Valley as a backdrop is simply breathtaking. The infinity bath with a direct view of the mountain on the opposite bank is also a one-of-a-kind view.
The food is a full course meal that lets you taste the bounty of Tokushima Prefecture. You can enjoy local specialties such as game meat, local cuisine, and Awa beef and Awaodori chicken, which are representative of Tokushima.
Spectacular view, exquisite hot spring, special cuisine and cable car. I think it's fair to say that this is a representative Japanese inn that everyone can enjoy. A superb inn full of charm, I would definitely recommend it if you visit Shikoku.
*Photography is prohibited in the hot springs, but this time we were given special permission to take photos during cleaning time, with my companion accompanying us. Thank you to all the kind staff who helped us and for your cooperation.
