A retreat inn with only four rooms - Yaeno Minakami Onsen | 4K Vlog of Private Onsen Ryokan
We stayed at Bettei Yaeno in Minakami Onsen, Gunma Prefecture.
This is one of the best hidden inns in Minakami Town, where many hot springs are located. Bettei Yaeno has only four rooms and does not even have a lobby, so you can spend a quiet time as if you were in a villa from the moment you were shown to your room upon arrival.
The owner, who used to work for company, decided to open an inn after making a bold decision. The beautiful building was designed by Matsuba Kei with an emphasis on greenery and open spaces. The corridor from the gate to the room is also beautiful, and although it is a small inn, it has a dignified presence.
The room I stayed, "Yamaboshi," is luxuriously designed with three rooms, a living room, a bedroom, a dining room, and a small garden. In spring, you can enjoy the cherry blossoms from the garden. After arriving, I enjoyed the hot springs, had dinner in the private dining room, and lounged around in the living room. Time passed by in an instant, and before I knew it, it was morning.
The highlight of this inn is, of course, the food. The ingenious Japanese cuisine by Chef Susumu Kanakawa has created many fans, and many repeat customers have come to visit, making it one of the inns that are now difficult to book. Kaiseki cuisine served in beautiful dishes. On the day, we enjoyed seasonal kaiseki cuisine decorated with autumn colors, as well as matsutake rice.
It is run by a family, and we had a lively conversation with the proprietress who served us the meal. It is an inn that is filled with family warmth and resonates with the spirit of hospitality. I will never forget when the owner, proprietress, and head chef came to greet us when we left. I think that starting a family-run inn in this day and age is not an easy task, including securing staff.
A hot spring inn that makes you want to support it and hope that they will continue to do their best.

    Thank you for a trip to Hokkaido with this beautiful video. The baths look so beautiful, and the "art" on the floor with the signs of the mineral water from the many years this onsen is used, is so special. I also like the fact, that they have a bath keeper. In situations like this, I really wish that I could speak japanese, and talk to Mr. Sato and get to learn more about the baths, how to keep them, of the history of the inn etc. I wish to visit Hokkaido soon. What do you think, are May or October good months to visit Hokkaido ? We dont drive (we have to rely on public transport), dont mind it if its cold, but we also dont want to have major places closed down because its off season. We dont want and cannot travel in summer, but September might be possible, if its much better than May or October.

    Thank you for sharing another beautiful video with us. This ryokan looks very special and beautiful. The stars are of course the baths (the "normal" baths and the 5 hidden baths). What a great and unique system. The setting of the baths is so special, in nature and so tastefully done. It must have been a bit stressful to use all the baths during your one night stay. But of course its stress in a good way 🙂.

    The baths look especially beautiful and special here, and I imagine that being in the water, when its raining, is a great feeling. Here in Switzerland, we have something called "solbad", which is a bit similar to an onsen. The water is not as hot, and you bathe wearing swimming suits. When its openair, its wonderful to be in the warm water, when it snows.

In Japan there are many modern ryokans but I feel its bit costly. Considering that point of view, I believe I am much more satisfied with most of hidden ryokans/onsen because its economical and you can enjoy extraordinary experiences. Also: As I dont sleep very well, I love to bathe in the middle of the night. Usually, nobody is around, which is great. And after that, I can sleep well. So I like ryokans or hotels (like most Dormy Inns), where this is possible.

    • @Documentrip2

      I agree and its really gourgerous to enjoy such famous onsen alone in the night. I feel most of the guests at hidden onsen/traditonal onsen are elder people and they sleep earlier. Most of the case you can dominate onsen alone. Its quiet and not need to care about others. Your style must be perfect but sometime it makes me sleeping on next day :-) My preference to choose ryokan is the one which room is less than 20. Hoshi Onsen has around 30 rooms and bit bigger, but onsen is available 24 hours and no issues at all.

Enjoy the beautiful main bath (but only, when its just open for women), enjoy a tasty sukiyaki and all the other really good looking food, and the historical and beautiful inn. Thanks for your comment. Hoshi onsen is one of the top hidden onsen ryokan in Japan and it's one of the best for me as well (as you may aware, this is first ryokan which I made video for 2 times). The only thing is the ryokan is located alone and there are nothing to be surrounded. You may feel bit alone but you can focus on the stay there. Hoshi no Yu is sometimes featured on top of travelling magazine and very famous, highly recommend you to be there.

      @@Documentrip2 Thank you for your answer. We will be in Tohoku next March, but for our "over next" trip to Japan, I think it will be Shikoku (so maybe also including this beautiful ryokan). The only places we have visited so far there are Takamatsu and Naoshima. P.S. We are very lucky in Switzerland, to have 4-6 weeks paid holiday per year (5 in my case) and I can also take and afford some 3-5 unpaid extra weeks per year. Which gives me the opportunity to travel a lot. As Japan is so far away, I would never go there for less than 3 weeks (4 are better). That means, that I have such a long list of places I would like to visit in Japan 🙂and not enough time for them.

      Wow, glad to see you will plan and consider visit to Shikoku. In Shikoku, there are famoust onsen place called Dogo Onsen and there are also many great ryokans there. I will post other video of Dogo onsen and hope if helps. Naoshima must be great place. That was my options before I go there, but only thing is no onsen. This is art place and hotel is desgined by Tadao Ando which is same architect designed for Setouchi Retreat which I posted previously. Currently I live in India, but its easier to take long holiday (3 weeks for 2 times in a year) becasue workign environment is bit tough. But once I am back to Japan, its really difficult to take it. Normally 1 week for summer and winter. I am asking my company to stay here longer to keep posting videos :-) Once you finalize the plan to visit Tohoku, please let me know!

But unlike you, I dont travel "only" for onsen. The Tohoku trip is booked, already about 6 months ago. In terms of ryokan with onsen, we will have 3 nights on Sado, 2 nights at ryukon in Niigata prefecture (you also visited there and I enjoyed the video), and 2 nights in Matsushima Bay. The other places, we will stay in normal hotels, but moth of them also have a bath.

    What a beautiful hotel ! It looks so different from the more traditional ryokans I know, and which you usually share. And in ryokans, I normally value tradition and history (and even "old fashioned" things) a lot. But I very much like this hotel, it looks wonderful and so "clean and straight". One can clearly see, that a master architect was at work here. I dont think that I will ever stay here, because its too expensive for me (assuming that the price you mention is per person, and not per room). And also, because I always like to travel to Japan in March, and then it would be too cold to use the pool, which seems to be one of the main attractions here.

    • @Documentrip2

      Many thanks for your comment. This type of hotel/ryokan is totally different with any other ryokan where I mainly introduce. Normally its costly and similar to western style, so its not better option for foreign tourists who want traditional style of Japanese inn. But I can say there are many type of hotel/ryokan in Japan and I believe it must be good reference for you. Yes, its bit expensive, but my information of price is 120,000-200,000/2 persons, not per person. The pool is splendid but I believe it is available only in summer season and other season is out of service. If you have any chance to come in summer, please try!

    This looks like a really special Ryokan and I very much hope that it will continue to be like that, so that for many more years, people can get this special experience and athmosphere. I think it is difficult to express you thoughts and feelings about that place, but I feel that you managed very well and that you give us a good impression on how its like there. I am fascinated by Tengu, so the Tengu bath would be wonderful for me (but maybe also a bit "scary"). The only thing I hope they will change, is that they will offer halfboard in the future. Eating in a ryokan is a main highlight for me, and that is missing here. Also, as I have to rely on public transport, that would be a problem here.

    • @Documentrip2
      @Documentrip2 Місяць тому

      Thanks for your comment! I believe this ryokan is bit tough for most of foreign tourists. Even for Japanese, its tough but there are many onsen geek to love that kind of ryokan because its really special. This is quite rare ryokan which maintain the mood of 100 years ago and honestly its not comfortable to stay, but I can promise you that you can have special experience in your life. Even for me, this place becomes special and I am defenitely back to there in near future. I totally agree, the only issue there is no food served. Before covid time, they served it but due to lack of workers they seem to be difficutl to manage. Not only here, I know many ryokans are struggling to secure workers because most of them are located in rural area and its bit difficult to commute and they are one of them (Young generation hesitate to work there, they want to come big city like Tokyo). Therefore recently there are many foreign workers in onsen village recently. Tengu is kind of monster and even for me its bit scary. But it makes mysterious mood and this is the reason why this ryokan is regareded as one of top ryokans for hidden onsen lovers. You can enjoy day spa and if you have chance to come to Nasu area, highly recommend you to try!

The foot bath in your room, the beautiful views from the Ryokan, the amazing food (especially the shabu-shabu and the soup for breakfast) etc. And the onsen, especially the open air free flowing river onsen, look fabulous. One question: can we use our private bathing suite there ? I dont think that the bathing suites provided, will be good for westeners ;-) (in matters of size).

    • @Documentrip2
      @Documentrip2 Місяць тому

      Their icon is special open air bath of river. I never see this time of large open air bath and they are serving bathwear for mixed bath. its really good because even for Japanese, mixed bath is bit challenging and most of ryokans never allow people with bathwear, only large towels. I spent much more time and enjoyed a lot with my wife. Private bath in the room is not big size, but I believe its no issues for westerners to enjoy alone (for 2 people, difficult). They also have large private bath and that is really big (honestly too big for 2 people) and you can enjoy there 24 hours. I highly recommend this ryokan for foreign tourists and hope it helps for your next planning :-)
