Yeah, so what if they bump up the price of the item to get a charge? The criminals should be charged!!! Do you think people only buy cheap stuff online?
It's the thief who decides to go after the pricier package. How effective would this sting be if there were unattractive items in the boxes? Don't know what the laws are in your area but also add some "No Trespassing" signs too. That might increase the charges.
Here's the deal. It doesn't matter what the value of the item is inside the box. If you don't want to be arrested for either a misdemeanor or a felony, DON'T STEAL THE BOX. The reason the departments are looking for a felony arrest is because they know it will probably be reduced to a misdemeanor in the court system anyway. That way the can at least get a misdemeanor. If it were just a misdemeanor, the thief would probably plea down to get a sentence of little more than community service as a punishment. The reason officers are doing the bait program is to DETER people from being repeat offenders or doing it in the first place. If there are no consequences, it is not a deterrent.
I boxed some bricks and had a handle with fishhooks attached to it..when grabbed it wont move and the hooks will embeddeep into the fingers. The barbs will ensure hospital removal that is if they can carry the bricks....
You can set just about any tracking number to send you a text once it’s scanned and delivered. You can also use the tracking number to know the exact day the package will be delivered and make arrangements to contact a neighbor for the day of delivery if you are unable to get the package once you get the text. There are ways to keep ahead of the lowlifes….
The law says, no privacy can or should be expected while in public. Cops don't like being filmed & try to stop it based on privacy laws. Except there aren't any in a public setting.
First, calling them 'alleged' thieves is asinine. Secondly, leave it to a law professor to raise concerns about police actually doing their job and trying to catch thieves. Sometimes, you have to sweeten the bait to catch the fish. You don't want to be tracked, don't steal my stuff. You don't want a felony conviction, don't steal my stuff. I'm tired of being captive to a delivery because of people who would rather steal your stuff than to get a job and buy their own. Now days, there are plenty of jobs to go around - go get one

A porch pirate, who hasn't been caught, but has stolen around 20 packages, each worth $100, but now gets caught with one package worth $1, the same sentence should apply no mater what the cost of the package is
Exactly. The value of the package is solely determined on what the homeowner ordered. Whether it’s a $1 box of tissues, or a $3,000 MacBook Pro, the thief doesn’t have X-Ray vision, so if they get slapped with a felony, it’s their own fault. They were willing to steal a random package, regardless of what the value was. The severity of the charge definitely fits this crime, because it could’ve been an expensive item.
Not to mention they can have a trespassing charge added too. It's cali, so I was just waiting for someone to come out in defense of the thieves. Sure enough, just had to wait 2 mins into the video.
High ticket item or not, they are still tampering with people's mail, which is a federal offence! Don't want to be prosecuted for stealing stuff? Don't steal stuff! Easy as that.
Trapping people into a louder crime? Please. They were going to steal the package anyway no matter what it is. It doesn't matter. They took the package, they pay the crime. No matter what.

In America we have this thing called the construction. That constitution says that everyone of us is innocent until found guilty in a court of law. It's something us Americans call due process. Maybe you've heard of it?
@@paulhorn7855 Yes, that is a principle of Roman law, not American one. In a theoretical, ideal court of law, justice would not be locked behind the paywall, like in the US. Wealthy and corporations would not sit comfortably simply knowing that people yearning for justice can't afford the legal process. But there is also absurdity of certain terms if you simply, and mindlessly follow the letter of the law. Don't get me wrong, due process is a fantastic and important element of law, because it is a basic element protecting people from having their lives ruined by false accusations and "witch hunts". But it creates certain absurd situations when you discuss technicalities. For example - technically a thief caught red-handed, in the process, recorded on cameras, and with ton of pictures taken and other hard evidence is STILL innocent, until court decides otherwise. That is the absurd element of following letter... to the letter. The reality is - person caught in the act is guilty here. Everyone is either guilty or innocent, regardless of court's decision. The court simply approves or disapproves the claim made by prosecution, giving it legal power.
@@hideshisface1886 in this age of deep fakes, due process is even more important then ever before. You don't know if what you're seeing is real. Even a shadow of doubt and a jury must acquit. Therefore, the validity of the evidence must be presented before a court so that only the guilty are held accountable. To many innocent people locked up as it is. When thieves steal a package pretty sure they are hoping for a higher priced item… so gimme a break about “baiting” and “trapping” them into a felony. It’s not like they are being tricked into stealing the package. They are choosing to steal a package of unknown value. So it’s at their own risk.
@@lindapedersen-hylka7170 one solution could be a random selection. Just like in real life. Some items higher end, some not. Leave it to chance whether a felony or not. Either have a string box type box you can open or the delivery company can, or do like they do in Europe in many places. If there is no one home, they deliver to a store in the area that they have an agreement with (gas station, grocery store, etc.) and the customer goes, picks it up, and has to present ID. Trina Parker Invasion of privacy? Are you kidding me? Their privacy is already invaded when their package is stolen!!! People don't know the difference between protecting their privacy and invasion of privacy!!! Only a liberal would say something like this!!!
This is absolutely not entrapment. Entrapment requires an agent who coerces the person to commit a crime they would not normally commit. Since the thieves did what they did on their own volition, there was no entrapment.
"Bumping up the value of what's in the box could raise some concerns"... only if you're a theif. Don't take what's not yours to begin with and you have no issues. Amazing how that works, right?
Right! Obviously some of them are opening packages to see if it's something valuable. Somebody opened a huge box of cotton swabs, rubber gloves, sharps containers etc.. for my office, they left it because you can't pawn 2 thousand cotton balls... I guarantee nobody has ever found a new Mac and put it back because they didn't want to risk a felony.
Some walmarts do that intentionally. Since its the same scumbags that do most of the stealing (80/20 rule in effect), they now keep track of thefts and don't go to police until the value total is a felony.

To the people saying this is entrapment, entrapment means you are being coerced into committing a crime. For example, when a cop sells or plants illegal drugs onto someone, only to arrest that someone later. What they are doing here is not entrapment. The thieves aren't coerced or influenced into doing anything, it's just a package that is the property of someone else that is placed where the thief isn't supposed to be in in the first place. It's like trying to say that a bank robber was "entrapped" into robbing the bank because the bank has a lot of money inside of it. That's not how it works. FungusMossGnosis it is not a bumper crime because the thieves still recognized the item as a Mac item or the valuable item and decided to take it. To Henry, it sounds like an increase in the penalty for the crime would be justified but, being a postal employee I can tell you, only stealing U.S. Mail is a federal crime. Up until the delivery, the mail is in the custody of the federal government. Once it arrives at the location, it is a crime to remove it from that location if you are not the recipient or a resident of the location where it's dropped off.
@@spydercofanboy4433 I'm missing your point other than already knowing what you stated. My point is that someone should be charged equally. If caught they should be charged with intent to steal. I don't think that it should matter that a letter or package came by U.S. mail or by UPS. +enkadu007 Entrapment means law enforcement encouraged someone to commit a crime they otherwise wouldn't have committed. That is not the case here.
If you steal things then I don’t think you have any rights to privacy. People should have a right to protect your property.
How is stealing a package legal? It is still stealing.

You don't get privacy when you break the law. No they are doing the job. If you want to complain you stop them.
The only people that feel their "privacy" is being violated are theives.
The law says, no privacy can or should be expected while in public. Cops don't like being filmed & try to stop it based on privacy laws. Except there aren't any in a public setting.

How is it alleged when they're caught on camera?
First, calling them 'alleged' thieves is asinine. Secondly, leave it to a law professor to raise concerns about police actually doing their job and trying to catch thieves. Sometimes, you have to sweeten the bait to catch the fish. You don't want to be tracked, don't steal my stuff. You don't want a felony conviction, don't steal my stuff. I'm tired of being captive to a delivery because of people who would rather steal your stuff than to get a job and buy their own. Now days, there are plenty of jobs to go around - go get one

You're views also fail to take in the potential for mitigating circumstances. Every person accused of a crime deserves their day in court, because justice may be blind but she's bi too. Justice goes both ways..
@@paulhorn7855 There are no mitigating circumstances if someone enters my private property and removes something without my permission. They are INSTANTLY GUILTY. When thieves steal a package pretty sure they are hoping for a higher priced item… so gimme a break about “baiting” and “trapping” them into a felony. It’s not like they are being tricked into stealing the package. They are choosing to steal a package of unknown value. So it’s at their own risk.

Nothing will happen to you if you don't try to STEAL something that doesn't belong to you in the first place.
Good way to explain it!
Thanks for the explanation.
Yeah just like they use them bait cars to catch car thief's.
Trespassing is the first crime, anything after that is completely fair game
@@BlindMellowJelly You need to know trespassing laws well first.Generally where the "mail man can go" isn't trespassing.Once you ask someone to leave though,it can become so.If you don't want someone entering your property at all without permission first, then you need to gate it.Of course this means, your packages are going to be left outside the gate too so.
I suppose people can always get a lock box of some sort and leave the locks code in the notes for shipping? Dunno but no one has "trespassed" here in the video.

They didn't give you permission to film them. 😡 They are just conducting a simple robbery of a package that you bought with your hard earned money. 😤 And you think it's ok to use security cameras because of this. 🤔 You should be ashamed.

They should be happy we don't go old school and just start cutting off hands, and heads of thieves.
Theft is theft if you can't do the time dont do the crime. I think they should be charged with criminal trespass too!!!! I don't feel sorry for any of these crooks!!!!
So if you punch someone, and the police come along and say: "Well, actually, they pulled a gun on the victim" - you're okay that a misdemeanor is bumped up to a felony? More taxpayer money wasted. Civil rights violated. You're sure you're cool with that? Maybe we should just start hanging thieves again, or cutting off that hands, eh keyboard kowboy?
These people stealing packages should know better - they need to be charged with their crime. It hurts to realize people have no boundaries to take from those that work so hard. I know what it's like because i knew people that lived with us and stole the little we had. They should be charge to extend of the law!!
If it was a real Mac book pro, they would have taken it with no guilt and would not get caught
FungusMossGnosis it is not a bumper crime because the thieves still recognized the item as a Mac item or the valuable item and decided to take it. If it was a real product, it would have been taken and rarely be recovered. This scenario is not similar to the scenario you are describing. They mention in the video thieves are becoming picker. They are not just going to steal a box full of diapers or staplers. They are going for larger items already. That has always been their goal
I would never feel sorry, I feel sorry for the stupid people defending the criminals.....
How are they "alleged thieves" when you have them on video stealing stuff?! They're thieves! We have indisputable proof of this. Why are you waffling for no damn reason?

That defense attorney made me cringe. I don't care what the value of the item is that cops are putting in these boxes, A CRIME IS A CRIME! It's not entrapment, it's called catching a willing thief in the act! Crime should not be protected under the law!
EBsportswiz that value of the item plays into whether jail time would be involved. A kid stealing a candy bar isn’t locked up. You steal a $3000 item and they’ll lock you up
It's Amazon packages, not federal mail mate.

EBsportswiz haha ikr
It might apply if an expensive item was packed in a box with a cheap item labelled on it, the thief could claim they wouldn't have stolen it if they had known it was worth so much.
Unlabeled packages though are a different matter, the thief is obviously willing to take the risk.

Aren’t they in jail-
I just LOVE the idea that because they are putting in higher value items means they are trapping you into a higher crime! Did you steal something that isn't yours from a porch that doesn't belong to you?!? Well, it could have been a box of Kleenex or it could have been a box of diamonds---either way, shut up and go to jail!
Fairness? Last time I checked, stealing mail is a felony.
larry smith
Yes, however a lot of these packages ARE from the USPS. I buy lots of stuff online and I use USPS a majority of the time.
It's not "stealing mail" if from UPS, FedEx, etc. If it is from the USPS, the postal inspectors are good, but they don't have the manpower or budget to deal with this issue as a continuing problem.
Mail theft is a real horror! What if send checks through the mail to pay rent, mortgage, phone bill, or other really important things. If it's never received that could be disastrous to the homeowner. These crooks could cause big problems.
This is not USPS mail. It is private service.
I dont care if I ordered socks, if you buy something, you wouldn't want others to steal it. I say cops should do it, more people should do it or set up traps or something. It's so stupid how many people steal packages
Smh
It's not entrapment it's just another tool and it's working.
I love how you can always find someone who is willing to go on the record of essentially saying, you have to be fair to the criminals while they are committing a crime

Di oi - It's their fault they don't know what they're stealing.. apparently it's a risk they're willing to take! It's all on them!

A fair trial is theirs by right. Unfortunately the lawyer forgets that. As well as the fact that the fair trial is AFTER they are caught.
Yeah you know what this time I have to agree stealing is stealing. Doesn’t matter how much.
Each one should be considered high dollar value because it could’ve been either way.
There is ABSOLUTELY no excuse, justification or defense for stealing. When you have crossed the line into criminal activity, you have already violated terms of fairness for someone else.
Should be a felony no matter how valuable the item inside the package is.
Yes
Stealing of any mail should be considered a felony. Package or not.
Yep stealing is stealing
Make it a 20 year felony for home invasion! Our front porch is part of our tax assessment because its considered "an addition to the home"
Ok you illegally entered my home that's home invasion...... I'd say they need to have a hand chopped off also
Higher priced items not fair? Then raise the penalty for all items. It's a federal crime to steal mail so why not make all items federal.
Henry L nice idea!
Before someone opened a package they don't know what's inside. Could be a 5 dollar cable or a laptop. Some thieves look inside to see if it's worth stealing. If caught they should be charged with intent to steal. I don't think that it should matter that a letter or package came by U.S. mail or by UPS.
This is unrelated, do you work inside the post office or deliver mail? I have a friend who had a package delivered by a P.O. box. She didn't get the package until a month later, because it "lost" in my small town post office. It there a law against that?
Many Amazon deliveries are not mail, handled or delivered by the USPS.
So far as I can tell, most in my area are delivered by contract employees directly to Amazon.
It used to be but private packaging delivery is a private organization not federal
They don't have any privacy rights when they actually "Stole" the tracker they are being tracked with

YEAH! I couldn't believe what I heard I was thinking why are they interviewing this lil pencil neck brick, yes people deserve equal rights but a lot of these thieves are already on their way to a felony it wasn't their first porch they stole from when they took the bait NOT ONE! Lol
I agree with you but it sounds like that man is trying to say with more expensive items. The police are creating to much temptation for the thief to resist.
If you see a piece of solid gold lying in front of a porch, wouldn't you feel a little bit curious?
How can the police create the temptation when the box is not see through, the thief doesn't know it is a bait package or they wouldn't steal it in the first place. So the only temptation is not caused by the police but the scumbag with no moral compass that deserves all the bad crap that can happen to him or her.
Hey if you want to avoid privacy issues and felony charges, stop taking people's packages. Problem solved.

Bumping up charges? Are you kidding me? Don't steal other people's packages and you won't have to worry about getting arrested and charged with felony theft.
"These alleged thieves..."
How can they be "alleged" if they are literally stealing on camera?

As you can see you have a lot of people who think this is just fine and even fight to help them. I think they need a mandatory sentence for this like a year in jail and a $5,000 fine no matter who they are.
LOL. It's not entrapment. You're not being forced to steal a package. Enjoy jail.
It isn't entrapment. It doesn't make a difference if the police or UPS are the one who put the package on the porch, the point is the thief STOLE it. It's the same thing with bait cars. Even if the police leave a bait car unlocked with the keys inside, they are not suggesting or forcing someone to steal the car. That is on the person.
+enkadu007 Entrapment means law enforcement encouraged someone to commit a crime they otherwise wouldn't have committed. That is not the case here. These packages are being left on someone's private property, with their permission. If a criminal makes the choice to enter onto someone's property and take a piece of their property they have no one to blame for that choice but themselves. Even if the package contains a GPS unit which gets them caught and punished. They still made the choice to steal. They now face the consequences of that choice.
enkadu007 no its not. Entrapment is when the gov encourages you to do something and then busts you for it.
So if an undercover says hey nice package there for the taking. That is entrapment.
If they simple leave a package and encourage no one. No entrapment.
It's just like people calling entrapment when a cop catches you speeding. Just because the cop wasn't right out in plain site. Evidently it's real thing in CA, cops have to be out in open so you know their watching you...
