    Hi Mike thanks for the great video. I want a President McKinley now instead of a 980 lolz. Just FYI from experience in a former life as a car audio installer I know that DIN mountable devices usually screw to car manufacturers own din rails for mounting. That’s the din mountable designation definition. This means that the holes on the side of the radio should line up to the holes cars factory din mounting bracket and cause it to be securely installed in the dash. Shouldn’t need to purchase special brackets. Just my two cents. Love your videos. I’m studying for my extra now, also reading Tab Publishing’s Guide to Electricy and Electronics. I love your videos! Hope to hear you on 38 LSB one day. 73s

    Two years ago, my friend and I purchased two of these radios. We live six miles distant from each other. Up until recently, both radios have worked great. The other day, my friend's radio microphone began to cut out. Last night, he could transmit, with good signal strength, yet, I could not hear him. He switched radios and we were able to communicate. Before we ended our transmissions, my friend said my radio was cutting out too. I ordered a replacement microphone. I should have ordered two microphones.

    I bought one of these because it fits into the center console of my Tacoma. It ain't like the old days before air bags when you could stuff your radio anywhere. Having a radio between me and a 200 mph air bag was not an option. It dead keys at 4.5 watts right out of the box on a Bird 43. I've been told the modulation is too low.....and they wonder why we tear into these things. In spite of needing some adjustments and the fact the mic sucks, I think it's gonna work out.

    FYI, you can get the din mount for this radio at CB World, they are $14 or so. I've gotten two of the radios and have one mounted in the dash. I love the radio, it doesn't pick up any noise from power lines. My 980 picks up all kinds of crap driving down the road.

For emergency needs, absent having a base CB, I can have this in the home while vehicle parked in yard running especially during this last storm in TX. One question Mike....While in a vehicle going down the road, will audio come from an AUX speaker if wired up the President or just the wireless mic ? Wondering since I have an older suv lacking sound deadening material of today so audio performance important.

    I should go back and watch your 1st review on this radio to see a better close up of the display, but I will ask here, is there a full frequency readout even very small on the screen somewhere? With these new digital faces and readouts personally I would love it if in place of just the 1 or 2 digit numbers it could display the full frequency readout. Or maybe have a menu item that would allow you to go from the 2 digit display to the full frequency display in large numbers. Thanks for taking the time to answer this.

    I thought Uniden owned President, are they now separate companies? you was talking about Uniden not caring for you on your service manual but President stepped right up and got you one. So I am a bit confused on that. Also in relationship to the wireless mic, until they get the approval to sell it on the USA website can we just order it from President France or some other overseas place and have it shipped here, it is the same mic, and it will work right?

    Need to look into the warranty extension. I was thinking it just extended the antenna warranty. Not the radio.

    • @mikesradiorepair
      @mikesradiorepair  6 років тому

      When you buy a antenna at the same time you buy a radio it extends the warranty of the radio by 3 years for a total of 5 years of warranty on the radio.

      Just found the info on Presidents site. I also noticed the antenna has a 10 year warranty. The front firing speaker is a big plus. I wish they would build a Base Station!

    • @mikesradiorepair
      @mikesradiorepair  6 років тому

      I tell everyone, if you want them to make a base station PLEASE TELL THEM.... I have told them but I'm only one person. Until their email box's start blowing up and their phone ringing off the hook with request they won't know people want one. Honestly all they need to do is use the McKinley chassis, drop it in a bigger box with a power supply and there it is, instant base station. Why reinvent the wheel. The chassis in the McKinley is a good working chassis and would work just fine in a base station.

    The problem with DIN radio mounts in Europe is that less and less car manufacturers kept providing such mounts in the dashboard in favor of all integrated radio systems and they use the remainder of the space to put other stuff into dashboard design.
    It's a shame because at the time that almost all cars had DIN mount spaces, C.B.'s barely came out in DIN size and the few that did only respected height and width but the depth was too long so my old C.B. could not fit into my old car's DIN spot.
    Here in Belgium, CB is near dead, only a few truckers can be heard sometimes on only two channels (in my area and I am near a city). So this given statistic will not provide incentive to car designers to foresee practical spots in the cabin of cars. Only trucks have enough space to accommodate a C.B. radio more or less correctly.
    Personally I just bought a President Bill because I can stick it against the center console's side and it is small enough to not be in the way. I keep scanning every day in hope of hearing more radio operators again. I hope that it will be better in France when I drive through it for holidays.

    You know what would be good is if the transceivers used DSP throughout so that there is not going to be any IF transformer cores that could be fiddled with by someone with a screwdriver you know what I mean a Balanced Quadrature Detector being fed into a dual ADC then to the DSP board then via a DAC onto the amp then the speaker and going the other way from the microphone to an ADC then the DSP board then to the duel DAC then the Balanced Quadrature Sampling Emitter then through a bidirectional amp then the bandpass filter to the antenna oh and BTW in TX the amp operated in power amp mode and in RX works as as a preamp before feeding the downconverter and is controlled by a program written in c++ compiled for the TI DSP processor stored in a EEPROM.

      Connection to any other radio is pretty straight forward. Mic audio, ground, TX switching line, power.... The one thing that hangs up a lot of people is the RX audio that needs to be supplied to the mic cradle. In these radios it's at a constant level independent of the volume control on the radio. Other than that there's not much to it.

    Are you actually staying the wireless mic feature isn't mentioned as a feature on the rigs box? Is it possible they had no idea this rig would work with a wireless mic, or they (president) knew and just didn't want to bother offering the wireless mic option? That would be something else if you've uncovered a feature they didn't know this rig was actually capable of. I've heard a few Bearcat 980's and they actually sound better with the wireless mic then they do with a wired one. Good job Mike. I wonder how long would've taken in order for someone else to discover this extra added feature that isn't actually mentioned as an option for this transceiver? Good job on the review. You the man. They contacted me and said they actually have the DIN mounting kits in stock in the US and also have the Liberty mic but are waiting for approval to sell them. Not sure but they may be waiting on FCC approval on the mic. Remember it's actually a little transceiver so it needs it's own certification and FCC ID number. I would expect to see it available soon.

    Instead of controlling that display, why not add a small MCU like a PIC to intercept the communication between the two MCUs? Just change the needed commands and then pass the rest. A few pins could be used to determine which bank of 40 channels it's on, but that has to be easier than trying reinvent the display controller.

      Would be nice if it was that simple, it's not. You would probably blow up a poor little PIC chip with the speed and amount of data that's going between the master and slave on this radio. They are running them balls to the wall in this radio.

    • @Mark19960

      It has a bidirectional datastream with two dedicated data buses that are level shifted.
      Doable, but not easily. Either way you are cutting into 8 data lines.
      It's not the 980 where this trick would work.
      besides, that's dodgy and I don't do dodgy.

    I dunno, it just feels wrong to use a radio to connect to a radio...

    Extra channels? Ya don't need that, if you want to play with the spectrum, Get you amateur radio license and actually learn something. Don't do illegal stuff, those extra channels are likely used and or licensed to other services.
