Great video. I found the same shortcoming of the komplete kontrol also to be the lack of dedicated screen, so i decided to put a smaller second screen behind of my s61 and drag the komplete kontrol interface over to it - the great thing is that every instance will pop up on that 2nd display when i click the browse button and now it doesn't block the main screen when you have the browser open. Its now a lot more like having the maschine studio browser inside ableton, in fact i would say without that 2nd display it would be a complete pain in the ass to use. I like the integration with ableton live, it works well when you put a few channels with blank komplete kontrol instances on them, move between them and arm clips for recording on the push 2. The akai does look like a better product in terms of layering and 3rd party support etc, but the lightguide on the kontrol is really useful for those large native instruments libraries especially for finding those hidden keyswitches (usually in red)
Nice setup man! Yeah, I mostly just use it with Maschine, but that definitely sounds cool. Now that they added browsing to the controller as well it's much better.
Fabulous review, man. I think you totally sold me on the Akai for the same reasons you like it. Plus it supports my go to synth: Omnisphere. Nuff said!
I tried the Komplete S49 and I have to say the integration with plugins is pretty amazing. I couldn't imagine if it had a display screen. I was able to load presets with ease. Still trying to decide on the 49 or the 61 key.
Much appreciated brother. I've been using more soft synths lately, and it's been tedious using the mouse/keyboard. I've searched high and low, and recently stumbled across these two. You've answered all the questions I've had concerning them, and then some.
Thanks for the review / Comparison, I love Native Instruments synths and libraries but I use a lot of 3rd party plug in's so I gonna go for the AKAI advance that give the opportunity to map any plug in, also the MIDI limitations of the Komplete Kontrol are definitely another reason to go for the Akai Advance. Thanks man!
I'm a fan of both products (currently own the Advance25) and I've been debating on adding the Komplete Kontrol 61 (because of LightGuide + Chords) to my setup; That way I'll have both technology and whatever improvement they will add in the future. However, I'm a bit skeptic on the route that N.I. took with integration of third party VST's. I mean, what if NKS doesn't take off? That will burn and stink a bit! Software wise at the moment, there's no denying it, V.I.P is the clear winner especially with their 1.1 update which automatically push new VST presets to the software as they become available. No need to even visit their forum looking for new stuff anymore. So much more is going in V.I.P; the Kontrol software is currently dull. Great detailed comparison. Keep up the good work!
+DRKLight DJ-Producer Yes I agree, if you have a lot of plugins Akai is the way to go. Also if you don't use Maschine Akai is definitely the way to go. As a Maschine user the KK does make sense, it's powerful with that combo but just comparing both keyboards the Akai is a better setup, more flexible, and supports more users due to how many plugins they support.
definitely one of the most insightful reviews/comparisons i've seen for anything. i can't afford either right now anyway but i'm so glad i watched the whole video.
thank you guys being that i am an Akai MPC Renny User i think its a no brainer for me your video broke down important topics for me as far as how many plugins come with the Advance as well as how many programs i can intergrate with including kontakt .....im sold .. Great Video
Im Glad that I Ended Up with The Akai Advance 49 reason being , I had my eye on the NI Komplete Kontrol, But Ended Up with The Akai and after watching Your Review It really Is a better controller for Me.
lol I was exactly looking for a comparison between those two keyboards this week because I wanna buy one of those. I think I´ll buy the Akai Advance 49 basically because of the browser on the hardware/ software, the pads and because of the great integration with a LOT of 3rd party plugins I use all the time.
Excellent review. I think the answer (for me) is to wait until NI or Akai makes the updates you've recommended. I would also like to see the light guide and scale mode become an industry standard and see other manufacturers do this (because, let's face it... we all use Kontakt and this is extremely useful for it). Thanks, STJ!
+lb editor To be honest though, you can use the light guide and scale mode with all the VSTi's you have as long as you open them up in komplete kontrol software.
I actually don't use Kontakt much, so the light guide doesn't bother me, especially since it should be muscle memory. However, scales and chords features would be beneficial to most people, including me.
Bradley Olinger I would find the light guide more useful for key triggers, as my knowledge of scales is pretty good. Kontakt in particular often has multiple sets of triggers from different keyboard keys and it would be helpful to know when I am getting too far down the keyboard and start triggering sample changes rather than playing notes.
+lb editor, just saying after a while it should become memory. I use a few Kontakt instruments, but use EW and Sonivox primarily. It's a nice feature but not absolutely necessary. Both controllers are a stone's throw from being an entry level workstation. With VIP, you have three brands to choose from now as well.
Saw the Akai ADVANCE at NAMM last year & really thought that's where I was going. But I use NI plugins so much I decided to roll with the S49. I will say that the workflow & fluency of creativity using Maschine Studio, S49, & logic has been sublime. Also worth mentioning is the fact that you can map your VST's inside Komplete Kontrol. Can't loose either way. Great comparison/review per usual my dude!
+Mike Jackson Yeah, they both allow you to map your own stuff...but let's be honest, I'm lazy LOL. Really just depends on what your setup is and what you're looking for. Using the Ni joint with Maschine is dope for sure and gets around having to look at the computer screen for browsing. I just wish they had layering/splitting and worked better with external gear personally.
Excellent comparative review...well, I pulled the trigger on Komplete Kontrol 61 from Native Instruments...the deciding factor was the ease in which you could map the keys, color code them and assign each mapping it's own MIDI channel output to distinct tracks inside your DAW. The other deciding factors were that I already have several plug-ins that support NKS, the simple user interface when CC assigning knobs and sliders and, lastly, the on-board arpeggiator. To me, it was a "no-brainer"...again, thanks, man!!
Exactly what I needed to see! Thanks brother for your review and demo of both of these boards... I was on the fence between these 2, but now I'm leaning toward the Akai... Well done!!
In regard to a point you made about USB/MIDI use, I have easy access to BOTH software sounds AND hardware gear, simply by loading up my DAW (SONAR, in my case) and setting up a few tracks routed to the gear/softsynths I want to use - works out great, and it's so simple - and STILL, only the single USB cable!
I hear ya, but what if I'm not using a DAW? What if I just want to use it as a MIDI controller to play hardware without routing through software? I guess it just depends on how you're working, thanks for watching.
I just purchase a Advanced 49 I was looking into the Komplete Kontrol, Nektar P4 also and I came across this vid I just wanna say thanks Bro I really needed this. The Advanced 49 has everything I need. This vid narrowed it down for me.
Rinaldo Jonathan I saw the XV49 the same day I bought the Advance an I liked the Advance work flow and design a little more. Pretty much the same thing but the Advance was exactly what I was looking for.
So I originally had the S61 MK2 Komplete Komtrol board. I sold it. But I did buy Komplete 11 because they gave me a voucher for 50 percent off. Thing is, browser for presets is still faster with the up and down key on your computer keyboard. I loved it, but I'm open to something like this now more because I use Ableton.
Thanks so much for your succinct and comprehensive comparison of these two keyboards ... your video was a breath of fresh air compared to most! Thanks!
VERY good review bro...I have the Advance 61 for all of the reasons you mentioned. It intergrates quickly into both hardware and software environments. Thanks for this review...
I been looking for a review like this ever since the Akai Advance came out. For the longest I've been deciding on which one to purchase. I tried both. I'm leaning towards the Advance. One thing I didn't like about the Komplete Kontrol was the touch strips. Great review!!!!
Definitely leaning more toward an Akai now. I rely a lot on sound modules as well as virtual instruments for my sound(throwback 80s rock) so definitely need flexibility.
Love your videos man. Your reviews are spot on and give a great unbias view of each product you are testing. You’re the reason I didn’t go with either the Push or APC40 MkII. I got both and they work GREAT side by side. That being said AKAI Advanced, definitely. Not taking anything away from the Native keyboard at all. It's a great controller but AKAI nailed it. I use quite a few different plug-in's along with Ableton and integration and the ability to layer sounds within every plug-in seamlessly with the Advance gave a whole new avenue for sound engineering. And that’s been one of the biggest complaints for all us in the world of VST’s, DAW’s and controllers. Integrating the controller with DAW’s and VST’s is a daunting task for these companies. We producers, musicians and sound engineers want that Synth feel where it’s all hands on. Someday a company is going to hit the home run and have the ultimate controller where you basically have a classic Moog synth in front of you with the ability to have massive, easy control over all your software. But for now the Akai Advance line has brought that dream much closer.
Thanks for mentioning about power supply in NI Komplete Kontrol. I've been ready to buy it, but this moment is really crucial for me. Now looking for some other 49-keys with great keybed, USB powered.
Right on, Maaan! Thank you for doing the side-by-side breakdown here. I was all but sold on the Kontrol. It DOES mesh up with a LOT of 3rd party plugins now, in 2019. Also, it's Mk2 Revision is PRETTY sweet. HOWEVER... I have always respected Akai from WAY back when I had the AX-80. That synth was PHAT! So.. Thanks to you, I get to go BACk and look at Akai's offerings. I will be using out board, or racked hardware samplers, that ALSO have to integrate with Logic Pro X. thanks dood! I'll get back here and let you know!!
+razork315 Thanks for watching fam. Yeah def something to think about if you perform/play live. I have ways to workaround it in my setup, but I like to be as open as possible when comparing and making sure I touch on all points.
Great video, very informative. I did no know anything about a MIDI device but bought the AKAI Advance 49 for developing background music for my 3D animation movies. I would like to see a beginner video on the different DAWs and how to use them to get some cool sounds out. Thanks so much.
Hi. I reinforce what most people say about your videos. You respect your audience's time and get right into it! I'll be using the Akai Advance in Pro Tools 12, and I'll post my comments on this combo. Thanks again.
St. Joe, this was a great review. I just happen to run across this vid as i was contemplating purchase of the Akai Advance 49/61. I was weighing out the Komplete Kontrol S series keyboard only because i just purchased Komplete 10 Ultimate software. I now have an Akai MPKII mini with Logic ProX and really like it. However, i'm more of a keyboard player and like the portability of the Advance unit with USB bus powered connection and want the versatility of live action, not to mention tons of 3rd party plug-ins. After your review, i'm feeling much better about going with my first instinct of the Akai Advance keyboard, as my choice. It seems to fit my workflow much better. Thanks for posting! I'm subscribing to your page!
+Ray Thompson No doubt fam, glad to help! Really just depends on your workflow which one works better for you, the Akai is definitely working with more plugins at this time and the layering/splitting is dope, not to mention USB powered. Thanks for the comment.
Joe, How do you add your own patches?...Say for Massive or Sylenth....Do they pick up the internal meta tags within each preset?...as having to go in & add your own patches & also their own individual Macro Controls...would for both keyboards send a user over the edge......fair enough for Standard Factory Banks...but what about your own presets?..
+Ally Mac You can go in and import your own/user content into the system, the Akai has an import button and the NI you can import user presets as to show up under the user bank. Tags would still depend on you though, if they are already set they will be imported if you haven't set them you'll have to do it.
Dope video! (As is all your vids) A very fair comparison. The Akai joint is serious. I had one for a couple of weeks but for some reason I felt more at home with the Kontrol. Again...Real dope video. Salute!!
Thanks for all your videos! Really helpful and well put together. I am considering one of these two keyboards atm and was initally going for the Komplete Kontrol and I like the light guide feature + I have the Maschine already. Was somehow disappointed to see they aren't supporting 3rd party VST's even though the list has expanded since this video. I really like the ability to browse all of your sounds on the AKAI. So me for as it stands is: Komplete Kontrol: + Light guide + Maschine integration - Price - Not supporting all 3rd party VSTs Akai Advance: + Ability to browse all sounds and instruments - No light guide I am also looking at the Alessis XV49 which is a bit cheaper. Looks like it has the same VIP software as the Akai Advance. Any thoughts on this?
+Zen6 I haven't used the akai since the review, ended up going with the NI. Honestly the main reason is the light guide, really helps with keyswitches and such when reviewing kontakt libraries lol.
You may have just talked me into the Akai. I have to replace my M-Audio Keystation 88, I am hoping Akai makes an 88 key version in the near future for now I think my next controller will be the Akai Advance 61 Professional. Thank you for proving such clear guidance.
I use the Akai Advance49 myself, the only thing i really miss is the description below the knobs that the native instruments has, also the the light guide is something i would love to have on the akai. And ofcourse a 88 key with hammer action and the other features i mentioned on a akai keyboard and i'd get that in an instant! I think the scale function combined with the led support is something very useful for a new musician, it saves you a ton of time learning scales etc when you have everything you need at hand.
Hi, the info about NI's MIDI is incorrect. The Native Instruments can be switched to midi-mode w/o unplugging by pressing SHIFT+INSTANCE, you can change the midi channel in the Controller Editor. That would be a deal-breaker if it could not, as many people have stated in the comments about going w/ the akai because of this. Thanks for the comparison video!!!
Maybe they updated it since this video was done (I don't use standalone mode), this was when they first added the MIDI out ability, (standalone/5 Pin output, not to be confused with general MIDI control mode) it it was definitely incomplete. Thanks for watching!
I've also noticed with the NI 25 S keyboard controller, you don't get the extra software found in their larger keyboards. Akai Advanced 25 still comes with their included software in all keyboard ranges and Akai is slightly less expensive. I'm trying to break away from using a computer for music composition anyway as I'm considering something like the Roland FA-06 workstation you had earlier. Great review though, thanks.
I went with Native instruments because of It's integration with Maschine. The light guide, with scale and chord functions hits specifically on my reasons for purchase. My music relies on chords heavily, and being able to access and use them so easily, is a no brainer for me. I still finish it all up through Ableton so I don't know if I should get off the grand for K11 Ultimate, but at this point just the regular version will do.
Now NI have redesigned their keyboards with dual colour screens and whatever else how do they compare? Akai have released v3 of their VIP. If you have both I'd be really interested to see how they are competing against each other
Great review thanks. Would you say the arps is better on Kontrol as it seems to have the ability to vary them slightly with the 'sequence' function? If I had a Maschine mk2 are these same arps and chord facilities built in...so if using Maschine and akai would I have the best of both worlds?
I'm not an arp guy so I don't really use it, but there's definitely some useful stuff. The arp/chord features have the same functionality when hooked to Maschine. The chords are the same and arp options but it just looks a little different in the software compared to how it looks in Komplete Kontrol.
Never mind :) Today I was messing with the newest demo version of the VIP software (only software- no hardware) as plugin on Win1064bit in Reaper 64bit, and just created some multis. Unfortunately when selected one of the multis, Reaper was quitting.... Anyway I'm more NI oriented, so if the time comes when i buy such keyboard, that will be an NI stuff. On the other hand, the features of the VIP are greater than the ones in Komplete Kontrol... but the implementation is not perfect.
Very useful demo. I think I like the Akai better right now. I have the Komplete Ultimate but also all the other stuff from Arturia, Spectrasonics, East West etc. Sounds like a no brainer for the moment.
Cool, thanks for watching. Yeah, really depends on how you work. I think on it's own the Akai is better, I use it with Maschine so that's a better setup for me. Hopefully they get Spectrasonics to go NKS too lol.
Very nice review. Well put together and covers all the points people may be looking for answers on. I'm a guitarist myself and although I can certainly knock out a tune on the keys I need all the help I can get so the NI light guide, scales etc is a massive plus point. Still not completely decided but looks like it may be the S61 or S88 for me :)
I already have maschine mk2 ,komplete 11, and mpk61 1st gen. Would it be more beneficial to buy the advance61 to expand my sound library versus buying the komplete keyboard?
Yeah, that layering feature is dope, hoping for a similar update for NI. Thanks for the review & response. You and Sonic state are all I really mess with. I even had Tito & Jermaine Jackson watch your review on Olympus Elements (sounds like a joke because of my name, but life is funny like that sometimes!). - Cheers!
In the market for a 49 key controller. I was wondering if you've come in to contact with the Akai MPK249 at all and what your thoughts were on that one
That Midi limitation (unplug USB to use the MIDI out) on the Komplete Kontrol is kinda a big deal. Wow, a deal breaker for me. Thank you very much for the video! I'm going to wait for the MKII of the Akai Advance. Seems very promising.
I have really been considering the 61 key Komplete keyboard since I have the Maschine also and will soon have the Komplete 10 Ultimate at my fingertips. The Akai does have some interesting features though. Thank you for your break down of features. On a side note, or question; what desk or stand are you using in this video with both keyboards? This is exactly what I am looking for!
+Brad Penrod Yeah, the NI board is dope if you're using Maschine for sure. I can do all the layering in Maschine instead. My desk is custom, I had it built by azstudioworkstations.com
+KnockSquared but considering that the Akai cost about $100 less for each size and that the Akai is integrated with many more plug-ins and the Akai is completely bus powered puts it waay ahead IMO
SoundsAndGear.com true, but so far it seems like the Akai is capable of everything the Kontrol is capable of except for the light guide. so I can see some people wanting that feature.
Hey I love your videos! I had a quick question? What do you recommend for someone who just started music production? Like I just got FL Studio 2 weeks ago and I am still learning how to navigate.I want a good quality product that I can depend on for the next year or so. Like I dont want to start with something really cheap then have to upgrade later on. Thanks!
Honestly, anything you get would be fine for starting out, especially since you're just learning FL. The main thing you'd want is something to play in your notes right?
Thanks for the comparison. It's worth pointing out that the Akai has drum pads. Are they any good? NI clearly expects you to own Maschine. It seems quite naked without a screen or pads. And on that note, it's worth asking how well Maschine integrates with your MIDI devices.
+Django Flaherty The drum pads feel good, but that is never a decided factor for me on a controller personally as I have Maschine and/or other pad controllers. But they are probably the best pads I've felt on a controller over the years. I'm speaking physically about their feel. Maschine works fine with MIDI because you just route via software, not quite the same as what I'm looking for in a MIDI keyboard. I like to be able to switch and play my modules in realtime without having to route anything in software so I need a midi controller that does that easily. Most of them do, especially older ones, not sure why NI made this an afterthought.
I just ordered the Komplete 88 weighted for the key action and integration with Kontakt. But I will also get a smaller inexpensive keyboard for organs and synths that will work as a controller for multi-layering etc. To me that's the best of both worlds.
Nice man, I will say the s88 has the best keybed for my tastes. I've tried many weighted keys and I feel they got it right, it's not too heavy and not too light. I can still use it for decent synth stuff without any finger fatigue, but it has a nice weight to it for when you want that feeling as well. Not the best for drums of course, but you can get away with it better than on most weighted keybeds.
Good review thanks! So it seems that NI have gone down the road of encouraging people to use all their hardware and software while hoping developers will jump on board to assist them with the growth of their own audio station monopoly. Well it worked for Apple phones and tablets I guess. Akai seem to have taken the more flexible road allowing you to use any of the instruments you already have and love which to me seems like a better buy for general music recording. Did you experience any problems with the Akai finding and mapping your instruments? I would also be interested to hear your views on the Novation Impulse controllers compared to the Akai Advanced.
+Geoff C They definitely have different approaches. Both can be used for sure, and really comes down to how you like to work, and if you use a lot of plugins. I didn't have any issues personally with the Akai outside of a graphical issue I mentioned in my review. I'm not a fan of the Impulse but think the SL MKII series feels incredible.
I have an MPC LIVE I currently use it with an M AUDIO 49 in STANDALONE MODE Which you can use plugins provided by AKAI 3 they have are BASELINE ELECTRIC TUBE SYNTH My question is if I were to switch to an AKAI ADVANCE 49 would I be able to access the different sounds from Advance in Midi Mode While in STANDALONE Mode. ?
thanks so much for replying :-)...did you get rid of it for komplete kontrol? Care to share what made ya switch. Lastly, how do these compare to the Nektar P which controls your whole daw.Im thinking thinking the akai and Komplete Kontrol are just more fun/ last mapping..your thoughts?
I had both at the time, and the Akai was just a review unit, though I think it's great if you're just comparing keyboards, I use Maschine so the NI ended up being better for me. Plus now the NI has on screen browsing so it makes more sense for me as a Maschine user. But it still doesn't have the external midi flexibility and the layering options of the Akai. I haven't tried the Nektar and they don't map to my main daw which is Ableton
+SoundsAndGear.com ...Thanks Saint Joe..extremely kind of you to take your time and explain; could not have been more helpful..God bless yah brother :-)!
Great Info Joe ..... Really in depth .... You really know your stuff since I suppose you use it regularly for production .... Lot of Reviews say a Lot of shit about the instability of the VIP Software ... poor quality control etc .... What is your opinion / take on this aspect .. ?
+Krishna Sadasivan I haven't had any stability issues outside of what I mentioned in my review of the Advance, mainly graphical issues which could be because I'm on windows 10. But no crashes or anything for me.
+J. Troy I'm not sure, I never use plugins in that way, I don't think it did but I could be wrong. I know they also had an update recently so it could have been added in there as well.
Thanks for doing this video. I was on the verge grabbing the Kontrol, though I think I'm going to hold off for now. Need more 3rd party support for NKS for it to be a viable integration into my studio setup.
+KFX KICKS PRODUCTIONS Thanks for watching fam. Also, remember both of these units can load pretty much any plugin, it's just not everything will have all the presets integrated for browsing and such.
+Dj VeNvM The Komplete Kontrol keyboard is simply a midi keyboard, it will work with any software. You can also load third party plugins into the Komplete Kontrol software if you want to use the scales and chords, etc with it.
I have a question: can sound come directly from the piano or does have to be connected to the computer? Because I want to buy a piano to practice learning but I don't want to have to buy two separate pianos. So can this one play like a regular keyboard? I'm talking about the NI Pianio.
just adding some information : if you need some tutorials for Alesis VX49 and upcoming M-Audio CTRL49 and cannot find it, look for ADVANCE tutorial. it is basically the same thing. most of his review for Akai Advance is also apply to Alesis VX49 anyway, I have one VX49 if you ask. and also their software is getting more and more stable for now. They have pushed VIP update 2.1.
How can you use multiple instances inside Maschine? Each new instance plays on the same midi channel. Can you create multi-layers with each opened instance? How would you set that up?
Being able to make stacks like the Roland Fantom and FA keyboards is huge and the Advance supports most of my plugins out of the box. The poor external gear support via midi from the Kontrol S, and the lite brite kiddie chord mode are deal breakers for me, even though I preferred the keybed of the Kontrol S as well. Thanks for the thorough review.
+Markus Arike Word. I mean you could hook up external stuff and play it from your daw, but I like to be able to switch and play my external gear directly from the keyboard and you can't do that on the NI without disconnecting the USB to go into "standalone mode" I wasn't feeling that. However with the NI I just use it as a keyboard for Maschine, and use Maschine as a module for Komplete/NKS, so it's fine in that regard, but just comparing keyboard to keyboard the Akai was more useful for me.
SoundsAndGear.com External synths that offer USB I/O would be able to be controlled via the Kontrol S, no? It's just not via traditional midi ports, which is unfortunate. Anyway, I'm grateful for your review as I was just about to pull the plug on one of these two controllers. Thanks, you're the man.
+Markus Arike Yeah, I mean you could play anything that is hooked up to your daw, I just use mine in a different way, I play my external stuff directly from my keyboard instead of routing through a daw, so I can play it in live. For some it may not be an issue, for me it is definitely a frustration with the NI board. They could fix it though, with firmware if they choose. Thanks for watching!
SoundsAndGear.com Good point, I forgot about the standalone aspect. I also like that the size of the Advance 61 about the same as the s49, and the LCD and traditional pitch / mod wheels are a huge plus. Thanks dude.
Joe you are the man!!!!!!!! I have been going back and forth with these two for a while now and I think you made my decision a little easier. The akai. But just the other day I saw Alesis dropped a new keyboard the VX49 that also uses the VIP Software. If I'm not mistaken akai and alesis are somewhat under the same roof so do you think it will be almost identical to the akai? I can't believe a new one got released as soon as my mind was made up. But thank you so much for this review it helped me in a major way. Keep up the good work and thank you for all the great info in all your videos.
+Marcus Herbold Yeah I'd expect the Alesis and Akai to be very similar, though the Alesis has 16 pads on it, if that's something you need. Of course the Akai has the larger knobs so a little different but the software should be identical. Thanks for watching!
+SoundsAndGear.com how are the pads on the akai? Are they anything like the pads on the new mpd2 drum controllers? Thicker and fatter than previous akai pads?
+SoundsAndGear.com have you had a chance to try out the korg taktile boards? The triton taktile or just the taktile? I was looking into these as well, although completely different than the advance and kontrol, because the price.
+Marcus Herbold The pads feel good, I don't use pads on my keyboards really but they do feel good to the touch. I haven't used their latest pad controllers though.
I definitely like your reviews and videos. I own both. But your absolutely right. komplete kontrol is perfect for working with komplete 10 and controlling maschine together. The advance will work good with any daw and their plugins and also is Excellent alongside my mpc Renaissance.
I bought the akai and its super amazing and works really good with ABLETON
+Jovan Thanks for checking out the video!
I bought it too. And it also works really good with Live.
can you tell me how to set that my play button in ableton reacts to play button on akai advance?
Nuff said!
+Mike Rinehart Thanks for watching!
I'm mad I sold my Komplete 9 Ultimate... I really am!! That NI Bundle really is worth the money! you get a lot with it.
+ViceVersa Musik LOL, thanks for watching fam.
I tried the Komplete S49 and I have to say the integration with plugins is pretty amazing. I couldn't imagine if it had a display screen. I was able to load presets with ease. Still trying to decide on the 49 or the 61 key.
Yeah, pretty well done for sure. Thanks for watching!
It does have a screen now for the Komplete Mk2
Much appreciated brother. I've been using more soft synths lately, and it's been tedious using the mouse/keyboard. I've searched high and low, and recently stumbled across these two. You've answered all the questions I've had concerning them, and then some.
Thanks for watching fam, glad to help!
Dude I've been waiting for someone to do exactly this! Thanks a million dude! Leaning towards the Akai after watching this video...
+J. Troy Thanks for watching!
Thanks man!
Cool, yeah def depends on how you like to work, both are dope in their own ways just depends on your setup.
VIP is peace of S@#$!.
definitely one of the most insightful reviews/comparisons i've seen for anything. i can't afford either right now anyway but i'm so glad i watched the whole video.
+Teve Thanks for watching!
Great comparison man. Didn't realize Akai was supporting so many plugins!
+Sean Divine Thanks for the comment bro! Yeah, they seem to keep adding more as well.
thank you guys being that i am an Akai MPC Renny User i think its a no brainer for me your video broke down important topics for me as far as how many plugins come with the Advance as well as how many programs i can intergrate with including kontakt .....im sold .. Great Video
+Rohn Wright Thanks for watching fam, glad to help!
Im Glad that I Ended Up with The Akai Advance 49 reason being , I had my eye on the NI Komplete Kontrol, But Ended Up with The Akai and after watching Your Review It really Is a better controller for Me.
Cool, glad you found something you like!
lol I was exactly looking for a comparison between those two keyboards this week because I wanna buy one of those.
I think I´ll buy the Akai Advance 49 basically because of the browser on the hardware/ software, the pads and because of the great integration with a LOT of 3rd party plugins I use all the time.
+Kolic Beatz Thanks for watching fam!
Got mine today
Man! I was just going through the comparison and then... Bang! you're review popped up! excellent!
+Brian Holloway Ahahaha, thanks for watching!
Bradley Olinger
I would find the light guide more useful for key triggers, as my knowledge of scales is pretty good.
I hear ya, yeah it really depends on which features matter to you most. Thanks for watching and glad I could help!
You back from NAMM?? Any cool new plug-ins close to being released?
I'm back! Didn't see many plugins honestly.
Exactly what I needed to see! Thanks brother for your review and demo of both of these boards... I was on the fence between these 2, but now I'm leaning toward the Akai... Well done!!
Thanks for watching fam, glad to help!
Cool fam, glad to help!
you should've purchased Alesis VX49. It is basically the same thing.
also Alesis VX49 price is the same as Akai ADVANCE 25.
Cool, thanks for watching!
Thanks so much for your succinct and comprehensive comparison of these two keyboards ... your video was a breath of fresh air compared to most! Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
You would have to redo this comparison Komplete Kontrol S49 MK2 a whole different ball game.💪🏽💯
Yeah, the MK2 is nice, still lacks in the MIDI and layering, but the screens are dope!
VERY good review bro...I have the Advance 61 for all of the reasons you mentioned. It intergrates quickly into both hardware and software environments. Thanks for this review...
+edgemuzik Thanks for watching!
I been looking for a review like this ever since the Akai Advance came out. For the longest I've been deciding on which one to purchase. I tried both. I'm leaning towards the Advance. One thing I didn't like about the Komplete Kontrol was the touch strips. Great review!!!!
+DeeJay ReGg Word fam, everyone has their own workflow indeed, just trying to show some info on both.
Definitely leaning more toward an Akai now. I rely a lot on sound modules as well as virtual instruments for my sound(throwback 80s rock) so definitely need flexibility.
+Bradley Olinger Cool, thanks for watching!
+Rak Hit Thanks for watching fam, I appreciate it!
Thanks for mentioning about power supply in NI Komplete Kontrol. I've been ready to buy it, but this moment is really crucial for me. Now looking for some other 49-keys with great keybed, USB powered.
Thanks for watching
Nice video. Your reviews are very inciteful and I hold them in high regard when I'm making a decision on what gear or software to buy.
+wickedstepchild Thanks for the support, I really appreciate it!
finally someone compared em!! dang thanks brother ur the man been down since late 2012
+TracksByDesz I appreciate the support fam!
Thanks for watching! Both can get the job done just depends on what you need to do.
Nice review bro, didn't know the standalone feature of the vip and the external pros over the ni's kontrol. Huge point for live performances!
+razork315 Thanks for watching fam. Yeah def something to think about if you perform/play live. I have ways to workaround it in my setup, but I like to be as open as possible when comparing and making sure I touch on all points.
Great review, great reviewer - thanks for putting this together!
+Ryan Curtis Thanks for the support!
Great video, very informative. I did no know anything about a MIDI device but bought the AKAI Advance 49 for developing background music for my 3D animation movies. I would like to see a beginner video on the different DAWs and how to use them to get some cool sounds out. Thanks so much.
Cool, thanks for watching!
hey,,, now we have a competition with the new Komplete Kontrol MK 2 keyboard. Looking for ward for your comparison and review
Yeah, it's looking good. I don't have the Akai anymore but still looking forward to checking out the MK2
Is the mk2 much better for controlling your external synths? I remember the mk1 wasn't much good compared to the Akai.
Hi. I reinforce what most people say about your videos. You respect your audience's time and get right into it! I'll be using the Akai Advance in Pro Tools 12, and I'll post my comments on this combo. Thanks again.
+Aidan Moore Thanks, I appreciate your support!
Salute!!
+faces316 No doubt, it really depends on which feels better in your setup at the end of it all. Thanks for watching!
Great comparison and general info of both pieces of gear, thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks man, really useful stuff in this review. Answered all of my questions... Absolute legend!
+Carl Fox Thanks for watching fam, glad to help!
A very objective and balanced view. Thanks most helpful....Just bought the Kontrol keyboard.
Thanks for watching!
So me for as it stands is:
Komplete Kontrol:
+ Light guide
+ Maschine integration
- Price
- Not supporting all 3rd party VSTs
Akai Advance:
+ Ability to browse all sounds and instruments
- No light guide
I am also looking at the Alessis XV49 which is a bit cheaper. Looks like it has the same VIP software as the Akai Advance.
Any thoughts on this?
+Zen6 I haven't used the akai since the review, ended up going with the NI. Honestly the main reason is the light guide, really helps with keyswitches and such when reviewing kontakt libraries lol.
Great comparison.
Thanks for all the time you put into your review.
+Manny Howard Thanks for watching!
Finally a good video from the 2 best midi keyboards out there right now.
Thanks!
+Profound aka BITS Thanks for watching!
You may have just talked me into the Akai. I have to replace my M-Audio Keystation 88, I am hoping Akai makes an 88 key version in the near future for now I think my next controller will be the Akai Advance 61 Professional. Thank you for proving such clear guidance.
Thanks for watching!
+Lukasz Jaworski Word, thanks for taking the time to reply!
Excellent video. Exactly what I was looking for.
+nozmo Thanks for watching!
This was very helpful. Thanks bro appreciate it. I just purchased the akai
+Jim Shannon Yeah that's a good point too. I had the fa08, but I totally understand what you mean man. I generally tend to use hardware myself.
Dope comparison bro! Very informative Peace!!
+Verysickbeats Thanks for the comment bro!
Cool fam, thanks for watching.
Well Elvin, I am the opposite of you. I went with Akia 61 because of the intergration with the MPC Touch and the new MPC 2.0 program. Awsome sounds !
Good vid, helps in my options of an additional controller!
+Tommie Dink Bell Thanks for watching!
Now NI have redesigned their keyboards with dual colour screens and whatever else how do they compare? Akai have released v3 of their VIP. If you have both I'd be really interested to see how they are competing against each other
I haven't used VIP in a while, I do not have the Akai currently so I can't compare.
Almost 3 years passed.... It would be interesting to see a comparison NOW about the new versions of hardware/software from NI and AKAI
I don't have an advance anymore
Never mind :) Today I was messing with the newest demo version of the VIP software (only software- no hardware) as plugin on Win1064bit in Reaper 64bit, and just created some multis. Unfortunately when selected one of the multis, Reaper was quitting.... Anyway I'm more NI oriented, so if the time comes when i buy such keyboard, that will be an NI stuff. On the other hand, the features of the VIP are greater than the ones in Komplete Kontrol... but the implementation is not perfect.
Yeah, I agree. Would be dope of NI allowed layering in Komplete Kontrol.
This review is still fresh
Thanks for watching bro!
Very thorough, objective, and fair. Thank you.
+Francois De Groen Thanks for watching!
Nice, thanks for watching! Yeah the light guide is pretty cool.
I already have maschine mk2 ,komplete 11, and mpk61 1st gen. Would it be more beneficial to buy the advance61 to expand my sound library versus buying the komplete keyboard?
If you already have Kokmplete, then I'd say the NI board makes sense
I'm a bit late in the day but your videos are fantastic! Thanks for the invaluable information.
Thanks for watching!
- Cheers!
+Mike Jackson Ahahaha, thanks for watching fam. Yeah, hopefully NI does add some stuff like that in the future.
i went with the s49, real fresh vid fam, thank you for droppin the knowledge-peace
+James Deasy Cool fam, thanks for watching.
In the market for a 49 key controller. I was wondering if you've come in to contact with the Akai MPK249 at all and what your thoughts were on that one
+DirtyPossum23 haven't used that one
That Midi limitation (unplug USB to use the MIDI out) on the Komplete Kontrol is kinda a big deal. Wow, a deal breaker for me. Thank you very much for the video! I'm going to wait for the MKII of the Akai Advance. Seems very promising.
Thanks for watching!
Great Review.... I see the Akai as ahead also...but not by much
+KnockSquared Thanks for watching bro!
+KnockSquared but considering that the Akai cost about $100 less for each size and that the Akai is integrated with many more plug-ins and the Akai is completely bus powered puts it waay ahead IMO
+Greg Serenade Definitely depends on the user and what they need. Everyone will have their favorites for sure.
.
The main thing you'd want is something to play in your notes right?
yes and I think I would like some pads, does the akai advance have pads?
Yes it has pads on it.
I love my advance
Nice!
Thanks Great Video...does K Kontrol need the software to make arps, scales and auto chords to work?does the scale lights work with out software?
Yes, they are software features, not hardware based.
this is exactly wat i needed to see
great job
+james massey Glad to help, thanks for watching!
+SoundsAndGear.com I hear ya. More and more outboard gear is coming out these days. It's as relevant as ever.
+Django Flaherty No doubt
I bought mine from the Pawnshop for a 100 and I was able to register it and get all the software, Killer deal, and amazing controller even for 2019.
Nice deal indeed!
Thanks for making this review. That was really informative!
+Abner Joel Thanks for watching!
Excellent and useful review with no nonsense 👍✅ Thank You
Thanks for watching!
Great review and comparison. Thanks!
+KINGDOMS Thanks for checking it out!
This was tremendous. So helpful! Many thanks!
Thanks for watching, glad to help!
I have an MPC LIVE
I currently use it
with an M AUDIO 49 in STANDALONE MODE
Which you can use plugins provided by AKAI 3 they have are
BASELINE
ELECTRIC
TUBE SYNTH
My question is if I were to switch to an AKAI ADVANCE 49
would I be able to access the different sounds from Advance in Midi Mode While in STANDALONE Mode. ?
The Advance doesn't have sounds, it's just a controller running software on your computer.
@@SoundsAndGear Thank you I appreciate that .
@@ricardofonseca3355 no problem
thanks so much for replying :-)...did you get rid of it for komplete kontrol?
Glad to help!
No problem fam!
Does the VIP software act as a multi out plugin in a daw? Like Kontakt or ominsphere would?
+J. Troy I'm not sure, I never use plugins in that way, I don't think it did but I could be wrong. I know they also had an update recently so it could have been added in there as well.
by 14 Min akai holds this battle down! thx for vid. akai has my purchase
+ivoryviking Cool, thanks for watching!
+SoundsAndGear.com hi! so i can use the complete s kontrol with any plugin like ReFx nexus 2 but it won't work with the smart play mode?
+Dj VeNvM The Komplete Kontrol keyboard is simply a midi keyboard, it will work with any software. You can also load third party plugins into the Komplete Kontrol software if you want to use the scales and chords, etc with it.
I have a question: can sound come directly from the piano or does have to be connected to the computer? Because I want to buy a piano to practice learning but I don't want to have to buy two separate pianos. So can this one play like a regular keyboard? I'm talking about the NI Pianio.
Hey Tarzan, this is a MIDI controller, so it would need to be connected to the computer in order to make sound.
just adding some information : if you need some tutorials for Alesis VX49 and upcoming M-Audio CTRL49 and cannot find it, look for ADVANCE tutorial. it is basically the same thing.
most of his review for Akai Advance is also apply to Alesis VX49 anyway, I have one VX49 if you ask.
and also their software is getting more and more stable for now. They have pushed VIP update 2.1.
+Rinaldo Jonathan thanks for the info!
How can you use multiple instances inside Maschine? Each new instance plays on the same midi channel.
Can you create multi-layers with each opened instance? How would you set that up?
I opened multiple instances when I had it, there is a way to change instances but I forgot. I no longer have this keyboard.
+Markus Arike No doubt fam!
good video man, have you used the M-Audio Code or CTRL series? if so how do they compare to these two? Cheers
Thanks for watching. I haven't used either of those so I'm not sure.
Great Comparison! thanks for the info. definitely very useful
+Adam H (Switch4Short) Thanks for watching.
Solid review bro!.. thanks
Thanks for watching!
I Have the Advance49 I love that you can layer different plug ins that's bananas for me!! Great Review!!!
+OverlorBeats No doubt fam, thanks for watching! Seen a few of your vids, looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the MPC Touch bro!
+Marcus Herbold No I haven't but they seem to have some cool features. May try to get my hands on one for review in the future.
Thanks a lot for the video Joe. What's your take on Nektar Panaroma ?
Thanks for watching, I haven't really use that one.
I definitely like your reviews and videos. I own both. But your absolutely right. komplete kontrol is perfect for working with komplete 10 and controlling maschine together. The advance will work good with any daw and their plugins and also is Excellent alongside my mpc Renaissance.
+Ron G No doubt fam, really depends on what you're looking for in the end. Thanks for taking the time to comment I appreciate it.
Just what i needed to see. Voice could use a few db increase. I can hear the playing just fine .
+TheHologr4m Thanks for watching.
Great comparison man! Hey that desk you've got there looks dope, what brand is it? Or is it a custom build? Cheers
+Dj Deeka Thanks for watching! It's a custom build by azstudioworkstations.com, check em out!
