Hey friends! Today, I'm going to show you how to create an acting resumé (or "resume" if you can't figure out how to type the accent mark thingy).
There are a ton of different ways to format an actor's resumé, so I'm going to show you the one I like best and I think looks the most professional. Like I mention in the vid, feel free to edit it and custom tailor it to your needs. An acting resumé is a really important tool for actors-- basically, it's a piece of paper that lists all of your prior performance experience and training. It's a great way to show that you're a professional right off the bat AND it can be the difference between whether or not you even get called in for an audition!
If you're new to my channel, HI! I'm Katherine and I put out a new theatre related video on every #TheatreThursday plus bonus uploads throughout the week! My videos cover a variety of topics include musical theatre / acting advice, theatre kid lifestyle, performance reviews, and general broadway geekery. Additionally, I make usual UA-camr videos, but with a slight theatre-y twist.

I’ve only recently discovered your channel a few days ago, but since then I’ve binge watched nonstop and I just wanna say that I really appreciate you and your channel so much. I’m currently a sophomore in high school, and as an aspiring Broadway actress, having representation in the media and pop culture from your channel is so so so meaningful and it’s so fulfilling to finally have a whole youtube channel that is funny, relatable, and super helpful and accessible to anyone else aspiring to make a career in this industry. Thank you! ❤️🤩
You are so sweet!!! Thank YOU and welcome to the #TheatreThursdayFam 🎉💕🎭
LOOK AT MY BBY GET SPONSORED BY BACKSTAGE!!!!
great video as always kat, love you!!!
Does anyone else think that she looks a little bit like Kara Lindsey?(my Broadway queen) like, something about her eyes just make me feel light and fluffy (so de Kara's) and I love that
Thank you!! 💗
My sister just said that
Yes!!
Yes so much
PUT IN A TABLE!
It helps sooooo much with lining up the show titles, roles, and theatre/director
I just add a table in an you can adjust the size of the boxes. It’s makes it so much easier and you don’t have to press the space bar a billion times
If you’re doing a table for alignment purposes, you might want to change the border color to white when you finish.
Hannah Pederson oh yes! This is what I do I just forgot to mention that😅 thank you for clarifying
That’s what I did! It helps so much guys.
Okay this was literally a lifesaver, thank you so much!
Or use the tab button, that also automatically lines things up underneath.
BACKSTAGE IS THE BEES KNEES 🙏🙏🙏
I just got back from my first Sweeney Todd rehearsal! I'm sure I've commented this a million times, but thank you so much Kat! I would never have had the guts to start auditioning if your videos hadn't helped me, and now I'm doing my first perfessional show in January! I know this sounds silly, but I do owe a lot of it to you, you helped me find the confidence that I needed and reminded me it's never to late (even though I'm fourteen), so thank you SO MUCH!!!!💖💖💖💖
I'm auditioning for my school's "production" - basically an after school class (in addition to the theatre elective) where you are basically help out in the shows for a certain number of hours each week if you're not cast, and the audition is more of an interview. My theatre teacher is not actually *the* theatre teacher, she's the debate teacher, but she has a few periods of theatre. She told me that you basically go in and talk with them for a while, like why you want to be in it, how responsible you are, etc. She said that they (the theatre teachers who are also the directors and whom I don't know very well) would probably ask about my previous acting experience, as that is what I would like to do over crew work (nothing against crew work, it's vital and I'm grateful to all crews everywhere). I mentioned an award I had received the previous year at a different school for being in all the shows that year, and she said I could bring a resume. I'm not sure what to put on it besides the shows I've been in. Any ideas?
Question: should I include the shows I've done at school on my resumé?
+Jamie Hood idk what she's going to say to this but i would.
Jamie Hood yes! I’m assuming you’re still in high school or just got out, so it’s expected that you did shows at your school. I’d say put them on for now and then as you do more shows with professional companies or bigger community theatres, then you can add that stuff and take off school credits
yes!
Yay! I’ve needed this for so long!! I’m probably going to try to get an agent and start auditioning later the summer! My parents wont let me start because I haven’t done school Theatre a lot? I don’t know why because I am ping it this year and next and they know this is my passion and I really want to do it. Thank you for the video!
This is so helpful! I know I want to start doing theater outside of school asap, so this is perfect
Yes, another great video Katherine! This is really what I needed 💕✨
Impeccable timing as ever, Kath. Thank you for another amazing video!
Literally perfect timing!!! I just started making mine a few days ago!! Thank you for sharing Kath!! ❤️❤️ Sending all the love!
I just finished my very first acting resume using your advice. I'm so excited I might cry. Thank you so so so much!

This has been such a helpful video (as always), thank you!!!!

Thank you for talking about this topic!!! I needed to know for so long! 😃
happy to help!!
This is perfect! Thanks so much!
thank you for doing what you do this video is so helpful!
Thank you so much for this video Katherine! As a teenage actor I've found it extremely difficult to find any work other than performing with my local theatre club. I've been sending my CV to whatever calls I can find that are looking for roles just under and just over my age but I've had no success at all, I've rarely even gotten a reply just saying thank you for emailing us! Hopefully some of these tips can help me out!
Whoa so weird, I was just thinking to myself today that I really need to get together an acting resume and bam! This video blesses my feed. Thank you 🙌🙌🙌
omg yay!!!
Wow this is so perfect!! I literally need a resume by next week and I didn't know how.
This is video was so helpful!💕
This is so great
Can you do one of these for biographies? I think I have mine down, but it would help a whole lot.
This is so very helpful, thank you!!!
THANK YOU I NEEDED THIS
Your channel is so helpful oh my gosh! 💜
Thank you!!
This seriously helped me so much
I don't even need this cause I am not a performer, but if Kat posts, I watch! ❤️
your videos are so helpful. Thank you
YESSS THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO
I am a young actress and I am just starting to want to do more professional acting. I’ve only ever done musical theater/plays but I’d like to get into film/tv as well, even though I don’t have much experience. How can I do this even though my resume will not be that impressive?
Keep getting more experience through theatre, training, etc. and audition for student films! Great way to try onscreen acting!
wOah last time I was this early, spring Awakening was still on broadway
Love you kath x
Kittensumgaming Which one?
Maddison Langdon the one on broadway
tOO SOON
the artful dodger We all thought that with moritz and Wendla and look at us now...
I am s o s o r r y
whY WOULD U DO THIS
Hi! So I did a developmental reading which I'm hoping to put on my resume, but without any explanation, nobody really knows what it is. Should I have a line that gives the gist of where I performed it and what it was, or do I just leave it be? This video is super helpful, thank you so much Kat!
Thank you so much Kath!! I have a resume but it’s pretty much filled with training. I haven’t been on any productions but I’m hoping I’ll be able to have my first audition this year! :D Also, do you put your resume and headshot in a folder? Or just give it as it is. Thanks! ❤️
Thanks for this it's amazing 🌹💫👑
Thanks for the help!
Could not have come at a better time! I’m applying for a production of Les Mis right now!!
Break a leg!!
I actually got my first audition for an actual professional community theatre next month. It's for Bat Boy (very underrated musical, but it's so amazing) and I'm planning on auditioning for Shelley. I probably won't get the part (or any job for the matter) because I've only been in three musicals (although I've been in eight shows in total) before and they were all for school. But I have anxiety and I feel like just stepping into a legit audition room alone can be a stepping stool to overcoming it and actually pursuing musical theatre as a career. Cause in musical theatre, you just can't be scared of people lol. It's like an unwritten rule.
oml you got sponsored by backstage I’m proud 💕
Thank u so much for this 💕
Thank you for this video!
Thanks!!! This was so helpful! I need advice for becoming a professional child actor and preparation for audition since the only audition I've been to has been to a school play 😂
I've taken pre recorded acting classes online would I include those? I'm a teen with no PROFESSIONAL experience but with school plays and some other community experience would I include those?
If you’ve been in tech crew for a show, should you include that in your resume? If so, where should you put it? I’m preparing two years in advance to audition for The Chicago Academy for the Arts for high school, so I’m starting my resume now.
Thank you so much. I have auditions in 6 days and I’m not ready at. All. Thanks!!
So helpful 💕🙏
omg a katherine video on my birthday!!! my day has been made🤗
happy birthday!!!
Very well done. Only one thing I would suggest is to add union affiliation at the top (SAG, AEA, etc.). If you are planning to attend an AEA audition either as an AEA member or EMC that is helpful info. to have on your resume.
I was taught to have a small headshot printed on an upper corner of the resume, in addition to the large headshot attached at the back, which would be different from the small one. Is that something casting directors really to see?
Are college audition résumés any different? and if so, could you explain a little? Thanks! P.s: you're my newest theatre hero and I love your videos, they're so helpful.
Hi Katherine! I was wondering, would you have advice for cold read auditions and if there is a way to prepare for them?
Do you have any advice on how to construct a resume for college auditions? I've got a ton coming up and a few require them for the initial application. I have a basic one that I've used at my community theater's (same format as you have here, only the shows I've been in are listed by date since I just update it every time I get cast in a new show) but I was wondering if you had any separate advice for this since it's a different kind of audition? I love your videos so much!!
OMG I LOVE U SOOO MUCH!!!!!
U help me out so much in my life
*Quick Question*
Would u recommend using a backing track on mobile data on ur phone for a 16/32 bar cut. Is it worth it? Is it risky?
I LOVE U SO MUCH *Ps everyone in ireland loves u * keep it up!!
I would have it downloaded on your phone in an easily accessible place. I keep all my backing tracks in a playlist on my phone. Trust me, it's always best to have it available without wifi!
Had you not uploaded this i would have gone to my audition with a normal resume 😂 thank you!
Interesting. In my 30 years in theater, I've never put down a director unless he was extremely well known. I don't even think I remember most of them. LOl. Great video!
Hey Katherine! I love all your theatre related videos! I’d love to hear your thoughts on my theatre covers 🤷🏻♂️🙈
yay! omg tysm!!!
Is it worth involving directing experience on a resume? If so, where would we put that or how would we format that? Thank you so much :)
How do I assemble my resume if I'm auditioning for my first performance in years and my only experience is from High School???Do I do it the same, just with my school name??
Lillie Renee I would, that’s what I’ve done
Hi, I had a question. I am doing a workshop for a play, how would we add that to our resume? Would it be just like any other play or do we specify that it's a workshop.
Also, another way I've seen people make the rows/columns even is by creating a table and just making the boarders invisible.
You mentioned putting in the sizes of film and TV roles. If you do a lot of stage shows that are lesser known (more of them are written by people at the company than less) so should I include those there?
Do you have any information on creating a technical theatre portfolio for college interviews/ any resources that might be helpful. I am planning to study tech theatre (specifically on a lighting design track) in college.
Hi!!! I was just wondering, when I attach my headshot how big should I make it?? Thank you 😊 💓
A lot of my higher profile works have been concerts (I'm only including high profile ones because if I listed every concert I've done since like 2014, it'd be like three pages long because they make us do like three a term) - should I add a separate section or just roll it in with theatre? Same for TV & Radio: I only have three TV/Radio roles and I'm low on space, should I roll them into one? Or put radio in with recordings? Anyone know?
this was really helpful! thank you! i also had a question, anyone can answer, i know everyone starts somewhere so i decided the best choice right now was to start to get into theatre but i wanna be in tv shows and films and movies and things similar to that. was it the right decision?
When you mention auditioning for My Fair Lady just as I was thinking about how I auditioned for My Fair Lady a few nights ago. 😅😂
Will you please do a video all about union/SAG and all that? please? also love you so much
Can you put experience like doing choreography or music direction for a show in the related experience even if it’s an audition for a show and not for directing or anything?
I know I'm late but under training do I include my school theatre, choir, dance, and voice lesson teachers??
For your related experiences, do you just list related experiences or do you need the specific names, dates, etc.?
Ie, list dance recitals as opposed to Name of Recital, year
Hello, what about webseries, do we put that with TV category or separately? Thanks!👍
Question if anyone could help me out. I’m 28 and have not been in any theater productions since high school, but I’d like to start auditioning for musicals again. I’m working on my resume and wondering what to include. I’ve been in choirs, performed with professional singers, done standup, and hosted karaoke shows for years, so I’m no stranger to performing on stage. However, because those things are not exactly theater-related, I’m wondering whether I should include any of them on my resumé or simply leave it blank. If anyone could offer any feedback or assistance, I would greatly appreciate it.
Also, love your stuff Kat. You gained a new fan and subscriber today.
What do you think about adding dates? I mean like the date of a production, how long you were in it, years of training etc?
How would you write out the choir recitals? Do you put the name of the place where you did it again? Do you put the choir director?
Hey! What if I'm just applying to drama school and my experience is more amerture drama productions rather than big theatre companies etc?
What if you don’t have much experience?
I’m a ballerina as well as acting, so could I put some of the ballet productions I was in?
Totally! I'd list it under "related experience"
Katherine Steele thanks ♡
mooMoo Milk音楽 plus definitely if it’s a musical, good luck
What if i uhhh did a ballet show when i was 7?
Thank you! 😁
I'm in high school and have never been in any kind of professional production, but I've been in some school productions. Should I put those on my resume, or leave them off?
would opera count under theatre or related experience?
also, if I directed a student film, would I put that under the film section?
Hey I was just wondering...I have an audition for a community theater coming up, do I need to bring an acting resumé to that or is it not important there?
Tell me why I was L I T E R A L L Y thinking about doing this today!
What if you did a bunch of school plays do I put the name of my school on the company/location
I was wondering if you have any resources for finding rep material/sheet music? like sites, stores to search etc. I'm trying to find some cheaper rep material bc im a girl on a budget lol
Go to your local music store
All of my leads are like 2 year old but I have a supporting role that is newer and then just ensemble should I still list the lead first.
Hi Katherine! I love your videos! I have a question for you. So I'm going to audition for my school musical, and I have to sing 16 bars of any song. They haven't announced what the musical is yet, and I know it's probably too early to be thinking about this because the school year hasn't started, but do you think "I Dreamed a Dream" would be a good choice? I'm an alto by the way. I feel like that song might be too popular. I've watched your videos about picking audition songs, and I remember you said to pick a song that matches the character you're auditioning for. So do you think I should wait to see what the musical is or should I go ahead and pick a song? If so, do you have any recommendations? And sorry this question isn't really relevant to the video.
Wait to see what the show is!
In TV, what do you do if the director varies per episode? I read somewhere that you should put the executive producer's name?
Thank you so much :D I will definitely use backstage and the resume tips! Also I am 15 are there any musicals you suggest for me? I want to explore more in musical theater :) THANKS 💖
YES!! I have a ton of vids feat my fave soundtracks & under appreciated musicals-- check them out! :)
I haven’t done any theatre or singing stuff so idk if this is a dumb question, but how do you know what your voice type is?
