    Whoopi, people don’t learn by being told to “shut up and do what I say”. It’s such lazy parenting. That’s why Medicare and insurance requires doctors to document their education of their patients on their medical condition for reimbursement. As studies have shown people are more likely to comply if they know the rationale. Simply, tell a child you’ll explain later when you have the time.

Similar to punishments get a why.

    Sometimes, a child has to believe you when you say something. It's about trust. If I tell you, "Don't touch the fire," you do what I say. Sometimes, you can learn by yourself, and sometimes you have to trust me if I tell you something. In between, we can negotiate.

      Thank you! I totally agree. Depending on the age kids cannot reason or understand a different perspective. The world is too complicated when they're young. You can't explain work ethic to a kid! They understand things in a literal sense. Sometimes they need to just trust you!

      @@robb4278 unless a little kid gets physically burned they're not always going to believe that they will get hurt. Some will some won't. My little boy is defiant and will do the opposite of what you say just because. Apples and oranges! Not every kid is the same

    • @robb4278
      @robb4278 Місяць тому +1

      @dm0016 you can still say YOU WILL GET BURNED to explain why, and if they do it anyway, then they will learn. "Because I said so" stops the conversation. This is basic English. Not complicated. Use it.

      @@robb4278 I'm a Speech Pathologist and a mother raising a toddler and no.. little kids don't understand words like adults. They are still learning. If you raised kids or had common sense you would know that even after an explanation you cannot let them near a fire, road, sharp objects, medication without constant supervision. Why?? They don't always understand remember see the consequences even after an explanation.

    Whoopi .".cause I said so" it might be appropriate if its a life depending moment... But most of our daily lfes are not, so there is not a real moment when a parent showd use that... Cause its not about respect, its fear, respect comes with understanding and its mutual, you have to respect the kid enough to give them an explination, ajusted to thier understanding

    I agree with Whoopi. At some point the question of why I have to do this, goes out the door. I said so and that it and you’ll get it when you’re older or you will see the reality later on in life. There are definitely some things we can talk and explain but there are no free exchanges of ideas when I say “clean the room” 😂. Maybe about how and where you organize and place it but not really about the room being cleaned.

      As my late pastor would say, "ENFORCED humility breeds GENUINE humility." She and I are definitely products of our generations, and I know exactly what she's talking about. Those were the generations where not only was respect EXPECTED, but later on, we totally understood WHY our elders told us what/how these things went -- and we could THEN be friends as adults. Too many parents are 'buddies' with their kids, because they're practically PEERS: they didn't get the experienced 'elders' they needed, which could explain why they don't really know the stuff they need to know now. Nothing wrong with allowing them to delve into their creativity and imagination, but they need to know the REAL.

    I understand Whoopi point of view but it’s a very closed minded one this isn’t the 1860s or 1930s Jim Crow and a simple “because I said so” is very lazy on the parent part at least make the effort to try to explain yourself

    Horrible Book! I am an English teacher in Japan...I have several sons...this book is the worst. The graphics (sorry Ms.Hahterrn) are terrible because they do not relate to the story line. Mr. Noqh has snails saying 'my dear' and pages dedicated to talking coins! There are too few graphics and too much text telling kids what the story is...and the vocabulary is too high for the target reader...since the message is already known by the people who might understand to content. In any way, from the graphics to the text, it seems that they ADULT writer does not understand the readership. I wasted my money on this book. I hope that others do not.
