I need to break out my textbooks. I enjoyed research, but never enjoyed compiling data.
Novice / Casual lifter here. Just finished my 6 month body recomp, growing muscle with a pretty drastic calorie deficit, and now stepping up my caloric intake to just a bit below maintenance. Ready for level 6, and the way you broke this down was incredibly easy to follow and understand all the way through Level 5. Really appreciate you speaking to the science and mechanism of muscle growth and development. Not only does this help us make educated decisions on what progressive overload and increased tension would work best for us. But also understanding the *why* behind how this works, so we can make better decisions about our dietary needs, workout volumes and intensities, and realistic goals for ourselves. Also big credit to you for being willing to revisit a formerly held conviction or opinion, and in light of new data or experience, openly admit that it’s a position you no longer maintain. Really appreciate your videos and for helping me turn my weight loss journey into a *fat* loss journey, with muscle growth offsetting all the fat I’ve been burning.
How was your success with the body recomp? It’s something I’m trying to do, but goes against the “bulk then cut” logic that I’ve always known, so I’m just curious on how it’s working for you. Thank you ahead of time!
@@SPLITTINIMAGE it went without a hitch, for nearly six months. My calorie deficit did finally become prohibitive once I got below 5% body fat, which is about when I made this post you’ve replied to. Since then, turning up the calories have drastically helped my workouts, but I’ve unfortunately had a few setbacks since then due to injury, which slowed my progress. As it stands currently, the recomp worked almost like a cut would *UNTIL* that low body fat percentage. From there, I’ve had to hit maintenance, or a surplus to be able to continue to grow muscle. Where I’ve noticed the most difference, actually, has been in fatigue and repair time. The level of exhaustion as you recomp is a pretty steady incline. Maintenance and surplus really helps ease that. As it stands right now, I’m actually recomping again due to the setbacks I mentioned, but I haven’t lost any strength or the gains I’d made in the last year! I’m just a little softer, less cut looking.
@@SPLITTINIMAGE so, I responded to this the same day you posted it, spent a whole cardio session typing up my reply on my phone, and it looks a lot like automod must have snagged it. Alas, this is my second attempt, so hopefully this one goes through. Recomps are tricky. You're looking to stay roughly the same weight, meaning that you're losing fat at the same pace you're gaining muscle. This is an incredibly difficult balance to strike. Anyone who's done a traditional BnC knows it's FAR easier to lose fat than it is to gain muscle. Muscle development takes a lot of stimuli, a lot of protein, a lot of consistency, and a LOT of patience. I recommend a recomp for newbies for only the first 6 - 12 months of exercise. You've heard of newbie gains, and this is the only reason I was able to recomp while putting on muscle in a significant calorie deficit. I tried to continue with a deficit just below maintenance for about 3 or so months thereafter and found that my exercise volume was absolutely not sustainable without a shift in nutrition. I had dropped to about 127 pounds at 5 foot 5 (this was about 15% body fat, maybe closer to 12%), which was definitely lean, but I simply couldn't sustain my volume and my ability to progressive overload hit a significant plateau. I gave myself about a hard month's break in the December timeframe and started a bulk in January 2024. From January to July, I went from 130lbs to 150lbs, and to be honest, the progressive overload came back in full swing during this period, given that my body was given a month of rest in December. In the last month, I've hit new PRs in almost every single set. After the first couple weeks of July, I've transitioned to maintenance and have now just started my deficit again, where I'm looking to trim down to 140lbs. This time, however, I'm only at a 200 - 300 Calorie deficit, max, and a protein intake of about 1.25 - 1.5g / lb of body weight. TL;DR (First, I'm no Jeff Nippard, and I'm not a qualified physical trainer, or formally educated. Please take these experiences as anecdotal, as it's just me sharing my own beats from my journey.) --I don't recommend a recomp unless you're a newbie lifter in the first 6 - 12 months of your newbie gains phase (unless maybe you're starting to enhance, and MAYBE that might be another occasion? I'm natty, so ymmv) --Whether you're in a calorie surplus or a calorie deficit, smaller amounts may be slower to show results, but won't risk overextending yourself like I did --On a surplus, the 1g protein / lb of body weight is likely sufficient, but on a deficit, I found (at least for me) that 1.25 - 1.5g / lb has made a difference in recovery --LISTEN TO YOUR BODY, no amount of aesthetic chasing is going to overcome your body's need for adequate recovery, and the leaner I got, the longer the recovery period has lasted for me --Be willing to do less. In my case, I was absolutely overdoing it on volume, where it got into the territory of self-sabotage. I'm now comfortably at upper / lower splits Monday Thursday / Tuesday Friday, doing half the volume with more results. --Be patient. Everybody's body is different, and embarking on a fitness journey is as much training your body, as your body is training you. You learn a lot about yourself, your limits, your genetic predispositions, and your own goals. It is an intrinsically, and deeply, human experience. Hope this helps! Always happy to answer more questions if you have them!
I'm ready for level 6. Thanks for telling me that damage and soreness are not so good, and tension without soreness is optimal. I'll aim for 12 sets per week and 1-2 reps in the tank.
Level 6 is periodization, so it depends on the muscle group, but going from 10 sets to 14 sets at 7-9 Rpe is a good way to start. Trying to go from mev to under mrv is the next level

So glad i saw this. I’m 63 and want to build muscle. I figured out I need more protein. I’m doing everything else correctly. Keeping my fingers crossed that i see changes in a few months! Great video!
I come back to this video again and again as I work with senior adults to whom I have taught Dr. Gabrielle Lyons' observation: "We are not overly-fat, we are underly-muscled." Therefore, I am working hard to teach my seniors to "build muscle" and de-emphasize fat loss activities and goals. This video gives me some powerful tools to explain the way muscles are built.
I absolutely love your videos. I graduated with a BSc in food science and health, and just finished my masters in Bioprocessing. Your video reminded me of the love I had for food, science and human health going into first year of uni. I love researching and learning, and want to be able to improve peoples lives with food and science.
Great video. Wasn’t difficult to understand, what’s more difficult is understanding what your goal is and trying to apply these principles to help you achieve your workout goals
I do all this from natural thinking which is awesome for me. My main points: 1) consistency don’t get burn out. 2) don’t focus on the physical gains focus on the mental and health gains and appreciate the physical gains. 3) I focus on five hours a week I can scale this how I want I can ramp it up and really kick my ass or let myself off a little bit. 4) eating is the best recovery. Focus on proteins, fiber, wholefoods and then fats. You need them all might as well optimize them all. 5) change it up!! Big muscles, and stretchy. Muscles are very important. Make sure you focus on everything. Do not do the same thing. 6) enjoy it. Find a way to make it fun. Whether it’s a classy like or just a certain aspect to the gym. Make sure you make time to make it fun or you’re not gonna wanna go.
Being a native French guy didn't prevent me to understand what you said. In fact, using schemes helps a lot to understand even advanced features and science behind muscle growth. Probably the most Frank and complete video on the internet right now. Congrats !
This was the single most informative compilation pertaining to muscle growth I have ever seen. I love the fact that you quoted the papers directly. And I wasn't even aware that recent consensus on muscle damage and growth was completely reversed. But beyond that the well structured delivery... Nothing short of a well prepared university special lecture. Honestly, could you do videos like this dedicated to strength training and maybe flexibility?
Ready for level 6! Thank you Jeff for breaking this down. Your analogies and visuals were so helpful in explaining these complex processes. Can't wait to learn more!
I never zone out when it comes to fitness. I watched the whole thing! I learned the most from the pro section. I have learned a lot of the elite, but not in as much detail, and I enjoyed that section the most, because I can see the practical application. The more you break things down on a cellular level, the more my brain starts to fry, and then I tell myself, "I don't care why it works, I am just gonna do it."
Great to see such a high standard of accurate fitness advice and editing, AND for free! Really setting the bar high (excuse the pun). Would be keen for level 6 for sure.
im ready for level 6! By the way I am shocked you were able to explain basically best science of muscle growth in 22 minutes! Well structured and clear presentation. You point out where info is well proved and established and what is just a speculation. I would love to work with you in a corporate world, lol
From all the high-quality information I've been able to acquire about this topic, this video included, my two main takeaways are: 1. Soreness isn't necessary or even good for strength training or muscle building. If anything, it's a symptom of overtraining: you could have done less for the same benefit, and you would probably recover sooner. 2. For any given exercise, if you notice that your tempo starts to decrease (each rep takes a longer time, your movement is slower) then that's a very good time to stop and rest for the next set. And if that happens in the first few reps, then stopping for the day is probably a good idea, even if you had planned on doing another set.
This was a great video! I really enjoyed how you broke this down into the different levels. My undergrad major was Kinesiology - Exercise Science. This felt like being in one of my classes again. I really enjoyed it man. I am ready for level 6!
Im ready for LEVEL 6 Jeff. Definitely implementing "Failure Training" to my routine. I have been training short rest periods and high rep ranges for five years and I have not seen any signs of hypertrophy, although I haven't also seen progress in my strength. Hoping to get more answers behind muscle synthesis very soon.
"I'm ready for level 6" haven't truly been challenged by fitness content like "Elite" and "Pro" knowledge in a long term and makes me remember why I love learning about this stuff so much.
That was a great explanation especially in level 4 and 5, you seem like you know way more about what you're talking about than most of my lecturers in pre - medicine haha. Also you should, make a level 6 as knowing this information can defiantly be used to create more efficient workouts.
You can tell that most "experts" in this field just half make it up and drop a few scientific words here and there for fake credibility. That's why this video is so refreshing to watch, such a thorough, and evidence based briefing, With limitations of current knowledge thrown in for context, honesty, and good measure. This literature review of sorts would have taken many many hours i assume. Thankyou so much.
The average and elite level were most useful to me! Overall you had my understanding until pro level, after which I got a little overwhelmed by the scientific details of muscle protein synthesis, outstripping my general layman's understanding of this process and its significance. Appreciate your work and efforts! Thank you 🙏
I dont known if this comment is sarcasm or not lol. But I would like to add, as someone who took more business over science classes this video is very informative and helpful for me.
Clearly Jeff targeted neuroscience students to grow his channel so quickly... its funny how smart people can be so dumb outside of the area they study. I think Jeff avoids going deeper for financial reasons my man
Wow, this is such an eye opener of a video. I'd put myself in the Novice level as a new lifter, but with my o'level understanding of biology I was able to really stay focused into the Elite level but was zoning out a bit in Pro level. I'd say I knew pretty much everything even up to Elite, and only a few things from Pro. I've been training for only 1 month so far, but I am a real nerd when it comes to doing things efficiently. This channel is pure gold when it comes to that and much more.
I just came to Jeff's channel to say I am very sorry to hear about John Meadows. It seemed like you guys were pretty close friends knowing you stayed at his house and spent time with his kids.
Ya man. It really sucks. Every time this type of thing happens it makes me think is this sht really worth it? I’m obviously nowhere near John meadows level of anything as far as bodybuilding but I know I’ve done damage to myself, especially when I was younger. My best friend died of a heart attack when he was 33 years old. Genetic predisposition to heart issues exacerbated by heavy steroid use. I feel bad for his little boys, he seemed like such a likeable dude. Literally never heard a bad word said about him.
I made it all the way to pro. I'm really trying to get into the more serious and scientific side of strength and conditioning. It made sense to watch it all the way through. I'm ready for level 6

@@SPLITTINIMAGEbro did not respond😂
TL;DR
(First, I'm no Jeff Nippard, and I'm not a qualified physical trainer, or formally educated. Please take these experiences as anecdotal, as it's just me sharing my own beats from my journey.)
--I don't recommend a recomp unless you're a newbie lifter in the first 6 - 12 months of your newbie gains phase (unless maybe you're starting to enhance, and MAYBE that might be another occasion? I'm natty, so ymmv)
--Whether you're in a calorie surplus or a calorie deficit, smaller amounts may be slower to show results, but won't risk overextending yourself like I did
--On a surplus, the 1g protein / lb of body weight is likely sufficient, but on a deficit, I found (at least for me) that 1.25 - 1.5g / lb has made a difference in recovery
--LISTEN TO YOUR BODY, no amount of aesthetic chasing is going to overcome your body's need for adequate recovery, and the leaner I got, the longer the recovery period has lasted for me
--Be willing to do less.

I do all this from natural thinking which is awesome for me. My main points:
1) consistency don’t get burn out.

Another great video Jeff! Levels 1-4 were great for me, and I definitely would need to study up to level 5 before trying your level 6!
From all the high-quality information I've been able to acquire about this topic, this video included, my two main takeaways are:
Regarding the second point, not quite. See this for more details: ua-cam.com/video/deDlhPmT2SY/v-deo.html
The second point makes no sense at all, it just means you are getting close to muscular failure. Lower the intensity
@@theninjabay I will. Thanks for the information.

I more or less have no use for this knowledge but I enjoyed watching it as my "thing to listen to whilst I eat my breakfast at work". Thank you .
