Been watching Dr. Mike for a year and just started my first year of university… if profs taught like Mike, passing rate would be way higher. Explaining complex topics utilizing practical application and humour to keep listeners engaged.
That prof gets the lecturer of the year award, most are fine and a couple of classes you actually work your way through the lectures. Just like the stereotypes of body types and being somewhere in the spectrum in multiple scales, it comes naturally to some people and others have hard time teaching like that even if they fought their hardest to figure it out.

Not to brag or anything, but i've been to a party one. It's exactly like sitting home, but the room is full, dark, the people are drunk, you can't sit, and some sort of a loud and shitty music drives you nuts. Also there is no food.
I went to a party once too! It was neat. Groovy house music. Very dark. Some new smells. Everyone taking some kind of vitamins. Lots of very nice obese women offering me back rubs. I must have fallen asleep at some point because I can’t remember much else but I do remember waking up in a very nice gentleman’s apartment. He made excellent French toast.
I realized the archetypal bodytype system is BS when I actually got into shape. I used to be a skinny twig as an adolescent, consistently dieted and worked out for around 8 years, and ended up a "mesomorph".
Its based on outdated "science" contemporary to phrenology. I still canno believe we moved past phrenology but somehow the somatotypes are still a thing.
@@Iridium-77-gThing is even if somatotypes had any science to them (which they don't) they would still not be relevant because the theory was never supposed to have anything to do with exercise or dieting, it's a psychology theory ("theory" is even being generous, it's a hypothesis) that was meant to correlate male "body types" (ie very superficial physical attributes that do not take any actual physical performance, diet, environmental or lifestyle factors into account) with a set of personality traits - the whole thing basically boils down to mesomorphs are confident outgoing chads, ectomorphs are nerds and endomorphs are jolly and lazy. If people read up on where these ideas come from they'd quickly realize just how much bullshit they are. If they EVER seem to be correct it's purely by accident because the reasoning behind it is nonsensical. Somatotypes are like star signs for lifters.
It is too bad that the algorithm pushes the BS to the average person instead of this awesome content. I personally bought into that body type thing for long time until I discovered Dr Mike, Coach Greg, and few other great channels. I started my fat loss journey a year ago, lost around 45 pounds and now keeping a healthy lifestyle, consistent gym workouts and cardio. Learning as much as I can from this kind of content. As someone who is actually 'skinny-fat' I feel seen. I actually call myself 'skinny-obese' now because 'skinny-fat' has been co-opted by just regular skinny people without abs. Not complaining mind you, just doing the best with the hand I'm dealt (including watching these videos). Staying lean and looking like I lift will always be a struggle and thats ok, just makes me grateful for the progress I can get rather than having unrealistic social media physique standards.

Hey man, I been there. At 38 years of age i was 6 feet tall 145 pounds with no abs. I trained up to 220 pounds in three years then did a cut. now i am 49 years old still training180 pounds (lean athletic). Here is the secret. Squat, deadlift, bench press, overhead press, 3 times a week each for 3-5 sets per day. 5 reps per exercise for 3 years, dont do any fancy routines. Just those snd get stronger... and eat!!! Dont worry about getting a bit chubbier. Just eat. Milk 1/2 gallon a day, to 1 gallon a day, lean protein, rice, pasta, Train HARD I cant tell you how many times i almost past out after a set of deadlifts. Keep a log. Try to slightly improve each work out but be smart If you get stuck take some weight off bar build back up. Thats what worked for me. It may work for you.. Be careful of who you watch on youtube. Dr. Mike is a gem but some others give so much bad advice.
I love all the information in your video and you can't beat the humor. I struggle with weight loss in the way you put it. When I diet my metabolism goes to crap and I could sleep all day. This has only gotten worse as I approach 60. Your video on weight lifting at ages helped me realize going for gains is great and I do, but keeping the excessive put 10 more on the bar instead of 5 is a smart idea. I've found I can pull muscles really easily. lol

Awesome breakdown - one burning question I have is if there's research that shows genetics vs. childhood lifestyle and how that contributes to metabolism, muscle mass, growth potential, recovery, etc. I feel like a lot of things get pinned on genetics where maybe early life activity and conditioning may or may not have a major impact
I was always confused as to where exactly I was on the body type scale. Started out training kinda on the skinny fat side, started eating clean and doing lots of cardio and lost 20lbs. Ended up just skinny. After a ton of time doing pullups, advanced pushups, pistol squats, I steadily put on 5lbs of muscle. Now that I've started weighted calisthenics, I've been growing like crazy. Wide hips and medium-width shoulders, but long thin limbs, and never been above a 32" waist. Never knew what category I fell into, but this helped give me a decent idea
i was taught at uni that meso/ecto/endo are real but it was not described as a restrictive thing that everyone fits in to, it was described as an observable phenomenon where athletes in paticular sports are more likely to share body types at the high end of skill, so the best of the best swimmers cluster around the same spot on the triangle, and so on for different sports
Great video as always, doc! Just a comment about the origin of the terms: The body type system is developed by William Herbert Sheldon and was not made with anything workout related in mind, but rather psychological. The theory was that if you are a certain body type you behave (most likely) in a certain way and it was on a scale from 1-7 on all of the three types. I'm not saying it is a good system for psychological evaluation, but it's even worse to use it as a guide for how to train. (Sorry if someone already mentioned this)
I think a bodytype scale could work but the current one is just wrong. A scale that shows the 3 main bodytypes in their fittest form and gauges your metabolic rate, muscularity, and skeletal structure. individually on a points system would be more effective.
As an ectomorph, I can tell you that it’s a huge setback. I spent 15 years working out and hardly ever putting on weight despite having one of the best trainers around. When I aged a bit and learned how to eat properly, the gains came but they were still slow. I finally got to a good size and was paralysed. Now I’m in my late 40s starting from scratch. The benchmark is getting gains each time I work out.
@ my L4/L5 was herniated and it was crushed. The insides came out and pinched my nerves and paralysed me. I had an emergency microdiscectomy almost 48 hours later. 9 months later it happened again.
Dr mike thanks for the Clarification I always said this and people thought I was crazy lol Me for example high school I was 150 lbs 6’2” I was a twiggy but had jacked legs upper body was not so great very lean but I was strong did a lot of dirt bike riding Fast forward in my twenties I put on a lil bit of good muscle over the yrs with a physically demanding job 175 lbs I got to Late twenties got married kids etc jumped up to 200 , then divorced in my early 30s got up to 237 with the help of Oreos lol all gut 6 months ago I had enough went on a carb deficit for 2 months and lifting iam eating healthy slowly bring myself up to maintenance and iam down to 199 and have made some impressive gains in the short term !! I just wanna thank you I’ve been watching for videos for a long time and your break down is so easy to understand!!!
The meso endo ecto is just a more simplified version of what you laid out. Yes we’re far more complex than any 3 scale table, or 4, or 12. The breadth and width of human A&P is massive. But like all things a generalization that works “most” of the time for “most” people doesn’t hurt anything (or help)
This is gold! I love how you always emphasize the importance of individuality in your videos. Not many youtube fitness enthusiasts talk about genetics and individual discrepancies. For example, default body type vs trained. Very few people would know that the way you look untrained and trained comparatively, can be vastly different. It's hard to judge a book by it's cover. Person A untrained can appear more muscular than person B untrained, but if person B has great trainibility genetics, he/she may surpass person A. Awesome work doc!!

Kept overlooking your videos and shorts for no damn good reason at all. I finally decided to see what the fuck it is you have to say and subscribed. This video was a great eye opener. I was a lean short string bean in high school (graduated 132lbs), gained plenty of muscle and a little height between the ages of 18-22 in the Marine Corps. Got out, never exercised, worked construction and didn’t give a shit about my health. I’m now 45 and weigh 205. I have a good frame, like to lift but can’t lose the damn spare tire. I was convinced I was a mesomorph and decided to focus on that…… yep - fucking BS. I’m going to take this advice, so THANK YOU.
8 types not 6. 2 possibilities in 3 categories give 8 possibilities. 1. Fat with muscle and large bones, 2.fat without muscle and large bones, 3. Fat without muscle and small bones, 4 .fat with muscle and small bones, 5. Not fat without muscle and large bones, 6. Not fat with muscle and small bones 7.Not fat, without muscle and small bones and 8. Not fat, with muscle and large bones.
It would if you combined the poles of each spectrum into bi-variate categories via combination and not permutation. What I was getting at in this video is like a "thin boned" body type or a "high fat" body type. YES, the way you're describing it could work (and in fact mirrors the combinatorial style of original body types), but it suffers from one of the major drawbacks of 3 body type system: it ignores intermediate values and gradations. Like, if your bones are average size, where do you fit? So yes, the 8 combos could be a thing, and a natural way to look at it, but I wasn't hinting at that, and in fact away from it. - Dr. Mike
To be fair to Sheldon, though many sources describe Ecto/Meso/Endomorph that way, the irony is that his classifications were actually more complicated that the "alternatives" listed. In this case, it forces Dr. Mike to address a Strawman. While there were training programs for the different somatotypes (big in the 50s), most Bodybuilding/Fitness sources get the Somatotypes wrong. First, and most basic: The "Ectomorph", "Endomorph" and "Mesomorph" as described were extremes. The "3" types were also not on a linear scale; they were on a triangular chart, with each type at a corner, which then makes "fat/skinny" possible via this classification system. Variations and combinations of the 3 were not only "allowed", but expected. Sheldon did not say at all, that people fell into one of the three; finding an extreme Meso, Ecto or Endomorph would be rare, just like IRL. To understand: Sheldon was a Psychologist, and the "Body types" were based on correlation to personality traits. The "3" main types were related to predominance of cells in the zygote: Nerve (Ecto), Muscle/Bone (Meso) and Viscera (Endo). Knowing that helps to understand where the "types" came from and their characteristic. Each "type" had 7 characteristics, that weren't either/or for the other types, so the permutations for an individual were vast. So, a 711 would be an extreme Endomorph, a 171 an extreme Mesomorph, and a 117 an extreme Ectomorph. Your "average" person might be a 444. A "skinny/fat" person might be a 525. I see people use Professional Bodybuilders as examples of somatotypes. Most often they are way off. "Frank Zane is a classic ectomorph" is one of the most overused one. No he isn't. Not even close. Any professional bodybuilder is going to be largely Mesomorphic, BUT, ironically, FULL Mesomorphs are not really present at the top, at least in recent years. In the past, yes, but Mesomorphs are large boned. Combined with PEDs you end up looking blocky. But back to Zane, a "classic ectomorph" is going to look nothing like a pro bodybuilder, no matter how much they work out. Maybe Manute Bol? "Twiggy" (Model from the 60s)?. Some strength athletes are also shown as "extreme endomorphs" because they are large framed..but that is Mesomorphy. The comedian Louie Anderson is one of the best examples of an Extreme Endomorph that I can think of. The "power" athletes that people say are endo are mostly very meso. Paul Anderson is one of the best examples of an endomorphic athlete.
If one looks at the "Somatotype training" programs that were offered, some of them actually have some merit. For example: "Endomorphs" were encouraged to use Dumbbells and Cables, isolation exercises, and higher reps, and frequent training. Mesomorphs: Barbells/Dbs and medium reps, with balanced training Ectomorphs: Barbells and lower reps, with full body routines made up of compound exercises. Pretty similar to what a lot of gurus preach. Also interesting...Endos gravitate towards low reps because they are often composed of lots of FT fibers, and lack muscular endurance. Ectos-gravitate towards higher reps as they often have a lot of ST fibers, but the suggestion was to train what you WEREN'T good at to "balance" your physique. This was during the "Physical Culture" years, so goals were different. These programs were also geared towards the general public, not bodybuilders per se. Arnolds "Encyclopedia" has a pretty good section on Somatotyping. Keep in mind that "Biological Determinism" is out currently in science, at least "mainstream" science. But if one delves into some of the specifics, there are some interesting correlations. Not saying I agree with it all, but it is more complicated than simple "fat/medium/skinny". :)
I agree that it is all bs. I’ve been a big boy at 250 with a round stomach, broad shoulders and huge legs. I’ve been 160 lb super skinny cross country build. Now by all means I’m not super jacked but I’m a built 190 at 6’2. This is all within 10-12 years.

So question about 6.) Fat Loss Potential because honestly, that's my problem and literally no one addresses it. Like what does one even DO for that? I have struggled with EDs because no matter how few calories I eat and how healthy I eat, I don't lose weight. I just get EXHAUSTED. The only way, I find, to have the energy to do anything is to eat at maintenance or damn close to it, but everyone likes to preach the Gospel of CICO. I've talked to multiple doctors about this and they just assume I'm lying but I'm getting incredibly frustrated and this is the only place I can find that even MENTIONS this
I have the same issue, hate tracking calories/foods, feel crap, end up unmotivated. I think you have to then just increase exercise to keep the weight off, what I’ve learned from myself, there’s no real other solution for me.

Wow I never really questioned the body types because I pretty well fit the endomorph mold, large frame, 8 1/8" inch wrist, wide shoulders, 8 1/8" hat size. As a HS freshman was 5'9" 250 then senior year was 5'11" 245, I actually worked out back then but was about 25 pounds overweight and of course was down on myself for being 'fat', and now after a decade of poor choices, am at 365.

I don't fit neatly into any category. Female with extra small bone structure but excellent bone density. I'm 5'7" tall. I gain muscle easily. I loose fat easily. With little strength training i have above average muscle mass and low fat percentage for my age, 24%. But, I never sit down and I do lift with kettlebells, ( even though you don't like them)
I graduated HS at 6'4" 190lbs. Muscular but I wasn't jacked even though I was an athlete and lifted religiously. I thought I was an ectomorph! By the end of my freshman year of college, I was 225lbs of muscle. It was a wild transformation! Turned out I could put muscle on easily, I just had to be patient and let my body do it's thing. Now I'm 51 and tip the scales at 275lbs at 15-20% bf, which I'm fine with at my age....you can tell I lift, but I'm not shredded.
This is a great video, but as an ecto/emo/virgin I spent YEARS learning how to make gains. I finally figured it out but only after studying and practicing training methods that were SPECIFIC to my body type.
It sucks that people always notice the thing that stands out. My entire life I have been pretty muscular and look really Good at the beach. This is mainly because I have a labor intensive job and stay pretty active overall. However , my legs below my knees are very skinny and no Matter how many calf exercises I do, Nothing will change the circumference of my legs above the Ankles. No matter what other people think I cannot help but look in the mirror and say "damn I got some skinny legs." What a bummer.

Hey man, I been there. At 38 years of age i was 6 feet tall 145 pounds with no abs. I trained up to 220 pounds in three years then did a cut. now i am 49 years old still training180 pounds (lean athletic). Here is the secret. Squat, deadlift, bench press, overhead press, 3 times a week each for 3-5 sets per day. 5 reps per exercise for 3 years, dont do any fancy routines. Just those snd get stronger... and eat!!! Dont worry about getting a bit chubbier. Just eat. Milk 1/2 gallon a day, to 1 gallon a day, lean protein, rice, pasta, Train HARD I cant tell you how many times i almost past out after a set of deadlifts. Keep a log. Try to slightly improve each work out but be smart If you get stuck take some weight off bar build back up. Thats what worked for me. It may work for you.. Be careful of who you watch on youtube. Dr. Mike is a gem but some others give so much bad advice.

I love all the information in your video and you can't beat the humor. I struggle with weight loss in the way you put it. When I diet my metabolism goes to crap and I could sleep all day. This has only gotten worse as I approach 60. Your video on weight lifting at ages helped me realize going for gains is great and I do, but keeping the excessive put 10 more on the bar instead of 5 is a smart idea. I've found I can pull muscles really easily. lol

Awesome breakdown - one burning question I have is if there's research that shows genetics vs. childhood lifestyle and how that contributes to metabolism, muscle mass, growth potential, recovery, etc. I feel like a lot of things get pinned on genetics where maybe early life activity and conditioning may or may not have a major impact
I was always confused as to where exactly I was on the body type scale.
Started out training kinda on the skinny fat side, started eating clean and doing lots of cardio and lost 20lbs. Ended up just skinny. After a ton of time doing pullups, advanced pushups, pistol squats, I steadily put on 5lbs of muscle. Now that I've started weighted calisthenics, I've been growing like crazy. Wide hips and medium-width shoulders, but long thin limbs, and never been above a 32" waist.
Never knew what category I fell into, but this helped give me a decent idea

i was taught at uni that meso/ecto/endo are real but it was not described as a restrictive thing that everyone fits in to, it was described as an observable phenomenon where athletes in paticular sports are more likely to share body types at the high end of skill, so the best of the best swimmers cluster around the same spot on the triangle, and so on for different sports
Great video as always, doc! Just a comment about the origin of the terms: The body type system is developed by William Herbert Sheldon and was not made with anything workout related in mind, but rather psychological. The theory was that if you are a certain body type you behave (most likely) in a certain way and it was on a scale from 1-7 on all of the three types. I'm not saying it is a good system for psychological evaluation, but it's even worse to use it as a guide for how to train. (Sorry if someone already mentioned this)
I think a bodytype scale could work but the current one is just wrong. A scale that shows the 3 main bodytypes in their fittest form and gauges your metabolic rate, muscularity, and skeletal structure. individually on a points system would be more effective.

As an ectomorph, I can tell you that it’s a huge setback. I spent 15 years working out and hardly ever putting on weight despite having one of the best trainers around. When I aged a bit and learned how to eat properly, the gains came but they were still slow. I finally got to a good size and was paralysed. Now I’m in my late 40s starting from scratch. The benchmark is getting gains each time I work out.

@ my L4/L5 was herniated and it was crushed. The insides came out and pinched my nerves and paralysed me. I had an emergency microdiscectomy almost 48 hours later. 9 months later it happened again.

Late twenties got married kids etc jumped up to 200 , then divorced in my early 30s got up to 237 with the help of Oreos lol all gut 6 months ago I had enough went on a carb deficit for 2 months and lifting iam eating healthy slowly bring myself up to maintenance and iam down to 199 and have made some impressive gains in the short term !! I just wanna thank you I’ve been watching for videos for a long time and your break down is so easy to understand!!!

The meso endo ecto is just a more simplified version of what you laid out. Yes we’re far more complex than any 3 scale table, or 4, or 12. The breadth and width of human A&P is massive. But like all things a generalization that works “most” of the time for “most” people doesn’t hurt anything (or help)

This is gold! I love how you always emphasize the importance of individuality in your videos. Not many youtube fitness enthusiasts talk about genetics and individual discrepancies. For example, default body type vs trained. Very few people would know that the way you look untrained and trained comparatively, can be vastly different. It's hard to judge a book by it's cover. Person A untrained can appear more muscular than person B untrained, but if person B has great trainibility genetics, he/she may surpass person A. Awesome work doc!!

Kept overlooking your videos and shorts for no damn good reason at all. I finally decided to see what the fuck it is you have to say and subscribed. This video was a great eye opener. I was a lean short string bean in high school (graduated 132lbs), gained plenty of muscle and a little height between the ages of 18-22 in the Marine Corps. Got out, never exercised, worked construction and didn’t give a shit about my health. I’m now 45 and weigh 205. I have a good frame, like to lift but can’t lose the damn spare tire. I was convinced I was a mesomorph and decided to focus on that…… yep - fucking BS. I’m going to take this advice, so THANK YOU.

Not fat with muscle and small bones 7.Not fat, without muscle and small bones and 8. Not fat, with muscle and large bones.

It would if you combined the poles of each spectrum into bi-variate categories via combination and not permutation. What I was getting at in this video is like a "thin boned" body type or a "high fat" body type. YES, the way you're describing it could work (and in fact mirrors the combinatorial style of original body types), but it suffers from one of the major drawbacks of 3 body type system: it ignores intermediate values and gradations. Like, if your bones are average size, where do you fit? So yes, the 8 combos could be a thing, and a natural way to look at it, but I wasn't hinting at that, and in fact away from it. - Dr. Mike

To be fair to Sheldon, though many sources describe Ecto/Meso/Endomorph that way, the irony is that his classifications were actually more complicated that the "alternatives" listed. In this case, it forces Dr. Mike to address a Strawman. While there were training programs for the different somatotypes (big in the 50s), most Bodybuilding/Fitness sources get the Somatotypes wrong. First, and most basic: The "Ectomorph", "Endomorph" and "Mesomorph" as described were extremes. The "3" types were also not on a linear scale; they were on a triangular chart, with each type at a corner, which then makes "fat/skinny" possible via this classification system. Variations and combinations of the 3 were not only "allowed", but expected. Sheldon did not say at all, that people fell into one of the three; finding an extreme Meso, Ecto or Endomorph would be rare, just like IRL. To understand: Sheldon was a Psychologist, and the "Body types" were based on correlation to personality traits. The "3" main types were related to predominance of cells in the zygote: Nerve (Ecto), Muscle/Bone (Meso) and Viscera (Endo). Knowing that helps to understand where the "types" came from and their characteristic. Each "type" had 7 characteristics, that weren't either/or for the other types, so the permutations for an individual were vast. So, a 711 would be an extreme Endomorph, a 171 an extreme Mesomorph, and a 117 an extreme Ectomorph. Your "average" person might be a 444. A "skinny/fat" person might be a 525. I see people use Professional Bodybuilders as examples of somatotypes. Most often they are way off. "Frank Zane is a classic ectomorph" is one of the most overused one. No he isn't. Not even close. Any professional bodybuilder is going to be largely Mesomorphic, BUT, ironically, FULL Mesomorphs are not really present at the top, at least in recent years. In the past, yes, but Mesomorphs are large boned. Combined with PEDs you end up looking blocky. But back to Zane, a "classic ectomorph" is going to look nothing like a pro bodybuilder, no matter how much they work out. Maybe Manute Bol? "Twiggy" (Model from the 60s)?. Some strength athletes are also shown as "extreme endomorphs" because they are large framed..but that is Mesomorphy. The comedian Louie Anderson is one of the best examples of an Extreme Endomorph that I can think of. The "power" athletes that people say are endo are mostly very meso. Paul Anderson is one of the best examples of an endomorphic athlete.
If one looks at the "Somatotype training" programs that were offered, some of them actually have some merit. For example: "Endomorphs" were encouraged to use Dumbbells and Cables, isolation exercises, and higher reps, and frequent training. Mesomorphs: Barbells/Dbs and medium reps, with balanced training Ectomorphs: Barbells and lower reps, with full body routines made up of compound exercises. Pretty similar to what a lot of gurus preach. Also interesting...Endos gravitate towards low reps because they are often composed of lots of FT fibers, and lack muscular endurance. Ectos-gravitate towards higher reps as they often have a lot of ST fibers, but the suggestion was to train what you WEREN'T good at to "balance" your physique. This was during the "Physical Culture" years, so goals were different. These programs were also geared towards the general public, not bodybuilders per se. Arnolds "Encyclopedia" has a pretty good section on Somatotyping. Keep in mind that "Biological Determinism" is out currently in science, at least "mainstream" science. But if one delves into some of the specifics, there are some interesting correlations. Not saying I agree with it all, but it is more complicated than simple "fat/medium/skinny". :)
I agree that it is all bs. I’ve been a big boy at 250 with a round stomach, broad shoulders and huge legs. I’ve been 160 lb super skinny cross country build. Now by all means I’m not super jacked but I’m a built 190 at 6’2. This is all within 10-12 years.

So question about 6.) Fat Loss Potential because honestly, that's my problem and literally no one addresses it. Like what does one even DO for that? I have struggled with EDs because no matter how few calories I eat and how healthy I eat, I don't lose weight. I just get EXHAUSTED. The only way, I find, to have the energy to do anything is to eat at maintenance or damn close to it, but everyone likes to preach the Gospel of CICO. I've talked to multiple doctors about this and they just assume I'm lying but I'm getting incredibly frustrated and this is the only place I can find that even MENTIONS this
I have the same issue, hate tracking calories/foods, feel crap, end up unmotivated. I think you have to then just increase exercise to keep the weight off, what I’ve learned from myself, there’s no real other solution for me.

Wow I never really questioned the body types because I pretty well fit the endomorph mold, large frame, 8 1/8" inch wrist, wide shoulders, 8 1/8" hat size. As a HS freshman was 5'9" 250 then senior year was 5'11" 245, I actually worked out back then but was about 25 pounds overweight and of course was down on myself for being 'fat', and now after a decade of poor choices, am at 365.
With those measurements or wrist and head size you have great potential man. Get back to it!!!

I don't fit neatly into any category. Female with extra small bone structure but excellent bone density. I'm 5'7" tall. I gain muscle easily. I loose fat easily. With little strength training i have above average muscle mass and low fat percentage for my age, 24%. But, I never sit down and I do lift with kettlebells, ( even though you don't like them)

I graduated HS at 6'4" 190lbs. Muscular but I wasn't jacked even though I was an athlete and lifted religiously. I thought I was an ectomorph! By the end of my freshman year of college, I was 225lbs of muscle. It was a wild transformation! Turned out I could put muscle on easily, I just had to be patient and let my body do it's thing. Now I'm 51 and tip the scales at 275lbs at 15-20% bf, which I'm fine with at my age....you can tell I lift, but I'm not shredded.
This is a great video, but as an ecto/emo/virgin I spent YEARS learning how to make gains. I finally figured it out but only after studying and practicing training methods that were SPECIFIC to my body type.
It sucks that people always notice the thing that stands out. My entire life I have been pretty muscular and look really Good at the beach. This is mainly because I have a labor intensive job and stay pretty active overall. However , my legs below my knees are very skinny and no Matter how many calf exercises I do, Nothing will change the circumference of my legs above the Ankles. No matter what other people think I cannot help but look in the mirror and say "damn I got some skinny legs." What a bummer.
