      *It would be great for Guinness to jump on this right away instead of letting time dwindle onward.* If it's real, they can confirm and document it. It's just too easy for us to get scammed these days, and Guinness has pulled some funny shit themselves.

    Guinness also listed Paul Anderson as bench pressing 627 lbs. as a professional. This was the same year (1957) that Doug Hepburn set the official record at 550. Other sources list Anderson's weight as being 619, 620 or 626, all of which would have been world records if done officially.
    I think with his extraordinary pressing power, he may have done it. But, after reading a long, long article investigating his 6270 back lift, I (sadly) question that one.

    • @thatguyfrommars3732
      @thatguyfrommars3732 2 місяці тому +1

      It's frustrating trying to document Paul's lifts because of things like this. Paul himself didn't help because despite being genuinely the world's strongest man at that time he was involved in circus-type exhibitions and also frequently made claims on his own that were blatantly untrue. Paul, being an Olympic lifter, used the bench press as an accessory exercise. He really only focused on it during two time periods: from 1955-1957 (before his overall strength hit its peak) and again for a few months in 1965. (This per the article jointly written by both Terry Todd and Paul Anderson about bench pressing in 1972. The article lists Paul's best bench as 600 lbs and Terry's as 515. Included in this article is an image of Paul pin pressing over 700 lbs while training with Dr. Todd.)
      According to an undated training routine given by Marty Gallagher (probably from ~1957 due to the overhead weights being less than his bests), Paul worked up to 1 set of 6-8 reps with 400-450 pounds (the difference could be based on RPE or Paul simply getting stronger over time). Paul's autobiography states that he always trained at 95% of his maximum strength. If on his best day 8 reps of 450 was 95% of what he could do, it suggest a 1RM of about 575 lbs or 261 kg. If Paul did these strict he theoretically might have been able to do 620 with wide grip and a bounce - but at that point we're deep into speculation and you're basically left with Paul's word as to whether he did it or not.
      P.S.: Based on the weights and reps given in Paul's training routine plus Paul's statement that he was always near max-effort, it implies that at that time he was capable of roughly:
      - Strict press: 420-425 lb/190.5-192.5 kg
      - Push press: 490 lb/222.5 kg
      - Bench press: 575 lb/260.5 kg
      - Back squat: 950-955 lbs/431-433 kg
      - Deadlift: 830 lbs/376.5kg

      @thatguyfrommars3732 @thatguyfrommars3732 Excellent post, Guy from Mars. I have an old Strength and Health magazine from the early '70s showing Paul and Terry training together. I remember Terry doing wrist curls with 175 lbs., and Terry rudely referring to Paul as rotund (which he was, but still...). I can't remember much else.
      Terry made a list of the 10 strongest men of all-time when Big Z was on top, and he had Paul Anderson 3rd or 4th. He mentioned witnessing his genuine squatting power, I think he saw him squat 800 for 10 reps!
      One of my regrets in life was that I didn't see Paul Anderson demonstrate his strength when I had the chance! He was doing an exhibition along with preaching about the Lord at a Baptist church that was less than a half a mile from where I lived! I can't tell you why I didn't go, but I didn't. I really don't remember why. This was either 1973 or 1974. My lifting partner did go and saw him.
      What do you make of the claim that Paul squatted 1200 lbs.? Do you think he did a partial squat (maybe a quarter squat) out of that hole in his backyard?
      It's a shame that Paul didn't have the insight to purchase a certified scale with an official present to verify his lifts. Just like the old-time strongmen of the past using the globe weights, nobody really knows what these barbells and dumbbells weighed. If you got called up from the audience to try and lift it, and you couldn't budge it, all you knew was that it was very heavy, not how much it actually weighed.

    • @thatguyfrommars3732
      @thatguyfrommars3732 2 місяці тому +1

      @@PinnaclePete Paul certainly handled such poundages, just not in a full squat (though he might have claimed that at some point). In the same training routine I referenced from Marty Gallagher Paul worked up to one set of 2 reps of 900 lbs, one set of 2 reps of half squats at 1200 lbs, and one set of 2 reps of quarter squats at 1800 lbs (lockout range of motion).
      Jeff Everson related that at his peak - in 1963 - Paul worked up 850 for 6 reps in the full squat in training, while Gallagher personally witnessed him squat 900 for 5 reps at an exhibition in 1965.
      As for verification, yes, it's a shame these lifts weren't better documented. But powerlifting was still a very new sport - the only "real" lifting done then was Olympic lifting, and Paul turned professional in 1956. After that his time was increasingly occupied by running his youth home and by Baptist preaching; his career as a lifter was somewhat secondary to those.

      @@IceArrow-dr8yd There is no competition for just budging the bar. There are guys who do real full range deadlifts with over 1,100 pounds and I bet this guy could do an impressive legit deadlift, but well under 1,000. This is a weird niche. It’s interesting, but that’s about it. I would be curious where this guy would rank in an actual deadlift competition. I’d guess he’d do pretty well, but hold no records.

  • @RobinMuirhead

    If it is real the amount of pressure even for a short movement pattern is immense, anyone who has lifted super heavy rack pulls will tell you the pressure on the body as a whole is unmanageable over a greater range. Needs ratifying, any normal gym bar would split.

    According to him, he actually did 700kg before he got injured. Had to go back down to 440kg and build back up and surpass the previous 700kg PR. So, it's more Muscle Memory and actually just around 200kg of new gains. Regardless, mighty impressive.

    Completely doable. I started doing this lift in late 90's and ended up hitting 1650 pounds for a single at a bodyweight of 218 pounds. I could also hit 1000 pounds for 10 reps without struggling. I trained this lift once a week on Saturdays for 2 years before l hit the 1650. This lift is a lot of fun to train, but it pack on a lot of muscle around the waist messing with your balance and it will slow down a person down somewhat, also as a construction worker it made me more susceptible to over heating at work during warm weather

    No way. Look at the lack of bend in the bar, compared to his other lifts.

  • @fictionknightc.r.9453
    @fictionknightc.r.9453 2 місяці тому +1

    Taking into account he is 6'4" ~390lbs and just recently slimmed down, I think it might, just _might_ be plausible. Eric Bugenhagen did a 1245lbs Rack Pull at 6'1" ~270lbs before he started using PEDs on the WWE- Even Juji mentioned during their most recent Collab how much bigger he has become.
    His Lift is also similar to the Hands-and-Thighs Lift, on which the World Record is 1910lbs by Joe García in 1997, who is much more smaller. Although ultimately different, and Joe is inhumanly strong for his Size; at 205lbs he did a Hip Lift of 2520lbs in 1988, still remaining the World Record- Closest was when Nick Best at 6'4" 350lbs tried 2535lbs and broke some Vertebrae losing nearly two inches in Height in the 2000s. And whilst García has been competing at the World-Class Level at USAWA since the 80s, Radim has done none of similar fashion.
    Honestly is quite shady and doubtful... Also, happy to see you uploading again. Take care make 🙏

    • @StrengthUniverse
      @StrengthUniverse  2 місяці тому +1

      I agree it's similar to a hip and thigh although with definite (although small) longer range of motion. I know about the hip and thigh record but not of Nick attempting it and damaging his back which is very interesting.

      Yeah, he talked about it in "World's Strongest Men" of History Chanel. When Brian, Eddie, Oberst and him were trying to replicate the Carousel Lift done by Paul Anderson, he told them the most important thing is to have the Weight perfectly balanced, otherwise they would cripple themselves, adding how he broke his L4 Vertebrae in three and his L5 Vertebrae in two seven years prior at the 2012 Giants Live when attempting that "Red Rocket" Hip Lift at 2535lbs, since then he has been 6ft 2in. His PB on the Hip Lift was 2514lbs, and beat Brian, OB and Eddie on the Carousel with 2790lbs; Eddie and OB popped some Discs trying 2715lbs due to it being unbalanced although lighter, while Brian did it without further Injury. The Winners of the Hip Lift in 2012 were Nick and Matt Jenkins (Rest In Peace) who was 6'4" 400lbs.
