I have the same problem here in the states. As a soldier that's been to war in Iraq with the 983rd Eng. Battalion in 2004, I keep warning these guys that want to go there and fight. First, I remind them that we have no extradition treaty with the Russians. If your captured. They can do anything they want to you. Second, if you've never fired a rifle at a human being, don't start. Once you open the door, it can't be closed again. Who you are before you shoot someone and after are very different people.

Have to agree with every bit of that statement brother. If veterans go there...they have to know there will be a far different set of S.O.P. and environment than they're accustomed to. If the U.S gets involved the game changes and they can reenlist...otherwise they're in the Ukrainians way and it seems they won't bother to ensure anyone other than Ukrainians safety and security

No modern American or British soldier has ever fought in a theatre where their side did not have absolute air superiority, overwhelmingly one sided artillery, uninterrupted communications, and a solid supply line. Their previous experiences could not have prepared them for the realities of facing a modern military force of a major nation.

Wrong ! Falklands 1982 British forces mounted an operation thousands of miles from home on the very doorstep of the enemy with no airfields . for their aircraft . 2PARA were outnumbered 3 -1 when they re-took Goose Green precisely the reverse of the odds required by military doctrine. The Argentines had Artillery , armour , aircraft flying from home bases on Argentine mainland. They were dug in on the high ground for weeks before the British Task Force landed. So you need to educate yourself mate !!

@francotavera8494 absolute rubbish, the only thing I agree is that British troops were better trained, and that's the point of this argument. As for "night vision" have you seen the tech we had in 1982? And it was few and far between. You had numerically superiority air power to hand ( using napalm) arty , special forces and your guys were dug in! And your supply line was an hour away not 8000 miles.
And as for having "allies" you guys were in the wrong trying to take the islands by force, so you didn't deserve any help.

No. He's shocked because Ukrainian armed forces doesn't have advanced technology nor sufficient ammunition like the US armed forces (except the ones provided by the US). Artillery and bullets are rationed in Ukraine - they plan and prioritize who should receive supplies immediately due to lack of resources. It's like the westerners experiencing how hard it is to live in the global south.
Russia doesn't have any of these supply issues but they failed initially because their numerical superiority, conventional heavy weaponry, firepower and air superiority couldn't overpower the weaponry provided by the US which were less but very advanced and lethal. Russia fell back in advanced technology because after the fall of USSR government didn't fund research and the corrupt oligarchs in defense industries with government contracts never really made any contribution.

      2) In Avgan campaign had precise point to fulfil. Synchronised with the official Avgan government, BTW. All of which were accomplished. And that, at the time when Russia had no army. As it was dismissed by the cold war loss. Which was indeed a big loss. In the cold war loss, Russia got more damage than in WW2. In cold war Russia always sucked. That is totally true. But, not in military strength. Even WW1 was postponed to WW2, because Russia was washed off the war field by the cold war (which was in parallel). Otherwise, there would be no communism and no WW2. 😉

I mean you look the polls when it comes to "Should we go to war/send troops to X country?" and the numbers are usually high. Then the question - "Would you enlist or deploy to X country?" and the numbers are dramatically lower. Troops are the VAST minority of a population that more often encourages them to martyr for peoples own ideas that they themselves wouldn never sacrafice for. Look at politicians, celebrities, oligarchs, and thier families. Dont see thier kids get blown away - but they'll send thoughts and prayers.

Now Dictator Zelentsky is USA puppet now.❤ He will not allow elections in Ukraine and persecutes all opposition to his Nazi regime. ❤Ukraine is the most corrupt place on Earth and is Bankrupt. ❤Any money that goes to Ukraine you can kiss goodbye to. ❤Ukraine reneged on the Minsk Agreement which they signed in 2015 and was Co signed by Germany (Merkel) and France (Hollande). ❤This is what provoked Russia into defending its borders from USA led NATO attack via USA puppet UKrainian Nazi regime Vassal.❤ Thankfully Russia is winning the USA initiated Proxy war. ❤I reckon Russia should take back all of Ukraine.❤ It always belonged to Russian anyway. ❤This would be the best way to protect all people from further USA led agression towards the Russian people.❤ Ukrainians and Russians are Brothers and have a great history. ❤USA history only goes back 250 years of which 232 of those years USA was at war with some other country because of USA agressive foreign policy.❤ Long live Mr Putin and Glory to Righteous Russia.❤

    1. Am I truly prepared to die for this cause?
    2. Am I willing to risk being seriously maimed or disfigured?
    3. Have I considered the consequences now and in the future regarding what war fighting will do to me physically and mentally?
    4. Who will be leading me into battle, do I trust their competence, or will they be careless with my life?
    5. What am I actually fighting for, do I really believe in the cause?
    6. What if I change my mind, will I be allowed to leave?
    7. How do the rules of war (The Geneva Convention) protect me if I am captured by the enemy?
    8. Am I fit enough, psychologically prepared and militarily competent enough to go to war?
    9. How do I actually feel about the concept of killing?
    10. Will I be payed, compensated for injury or have access to medical care and pensions when I’m finished?
    11. What impact will my service have on my family and loved ones?
From ex British Army ( Op Granby/Desert Shield and Storm 90-91)

You need to realise - Odessa is Russian city, formed by Katherine the Great. Russian and Ukrainians ARE THE SAME PEOPLE! Except for the West Ukrainians, who are mixture of Russina, Polish, Hungarians, Romanians, etc. Most of Ukraine is former Russian heritage - reason why all cities have Russian names! Ukraine itself was turned into "a country" in 1991. There was no Ukraine prior to that. Additional proof - there are no Ukrainian-language books or documents in history that date earlier then 1947 - This language was created artificially. This is reason why Ukrainians are Russian-speaking population. So those who divide Ukrainians and Russians, and trying to separate Ukrainians form Russian culture - are nuts.

Neither NATO nor the US or UK are officially in this war. The (former) soldiers going there are mercenaries. You can earn good money over there. Around 1000 to 2000 dollars per day depending on your experience. The problem is, that these mercenaries are used to fight untrained people with AK47 in some dessert village after bombing the whole country for 40 days. This is how the US usually does it. This time it is different. They are fighting a well trained profesisonal army that is probablsy winning without air support. It is not only the weather. The job is really much harder this time. That is what he is warning other mercenaries about.

Now that the lines have somewhat stabilised, they've started dividing the international volunteers there based on competence. Trained combat vets get assessed on their skills before being assigned to a unit of their speciality while untrained applicants are now being put on a waitlist pending further needs.
Ultimately the biggest value of the international volunteers isnt capability but morale. According to people I've talked to, the mere physical presence of a foreigner even if doing something mundane like checkpoint duty has been very reassuring to local Ukrainians in reminding them that the world knows their plight and is backing them up.

After all its one thing to change your facebook profile picture or donate money from afar or even send weapons, but leaving the safety of your home to enter an active warzone and risk your life standing side by side with a complete stranger against a common foe? That resonates, especially to people who have hit rock bottom and lost everything.
EDIT: They are currently not accepting volunteers unless they have VERIFIABLE combat experience, apparently the number of combat vet volunteers has been so much they are upping the requirements.

They have 'liberated' Luhansk and Donetsk. They have also destroyed the dam that Ukraibe had built, which had destroyed 90% of Crimea's agriculture. Roughly and theoretically speaking, mercenaries can be shot on the spot without trial if they are recognized as unnecessary for exchange or are found guilty of war crimes. I don't think our military eliminate such captives, but the mercenaries have no rights and no hope definitely.

There is about a ten to one ratio for support and the troops actually shooting bullets. There was a clip about a week ago revealing that the Ukrainian's are fully aware that some people are just not suited for battle (one of the reasons they were looking for people with battle experience first) and the chap pointed out that many people volunteering to fight were simply not up to it and wouldn't be allowed to do so. Those people will likely find themselves helping civilians, running supplies, looking for bodies in the rubble of downed buildings etc. etc. etc. and would form part of that 9 person support group supporting the one with the rifle. Hence while the video is accurate from a pure battle perspective, it completely misses the idea that only one in ten actually shoots the bullet and their contribution is both valuable and critical.

Problem is that it is done by company unity, muscle memory, and (there isn't a better way to describe this) indoctrination into us and them. And most people when back in the real world find it hard to legitimize killing even an enemy. The fact is most of the Russian troops would rather be anywhere else than the Ukraine, it is only Pathetic Little Pipsqueak Putin and his arse kissers who wanted this war. Slava Ukraine.

He rarely spoke about his experiences, and if he did he never glorified it in any way, and usually limited it to humorous anecdotal things that had happened. It was probably his way of coping. Once in a while he'd get persuaded to attend local VFW meetings, and he always said it was the members who never saw any combat who'd speak of the guts, glory, and heroic drama on the battlefield. and how that the few who members who actually did see combat were always quiet about it.

    "The Grave" by Don McLean
The grave that they dug him had flowers
Gathered from the hillsides in bright summer colours,
And the brown earth bleached white at the edge of his gravestone.
    He's gone.

When the wars of our nation did beckon,
A man barely twenty did answer the calling.
Proud of the trust that he placed in our nation,
    He's gone,
But Eternity knows him, and it knows what we've done.
And the rain fell like pearls on the leaves of the flowers
Leaving brown, muddy clay where the earth had been dry.
And deep in the trench he waited for hours,
As he held to his rifle and prayed not to die.

But the silence of night was shattered by fire
As guns and grenades blasted sharp through the air.
And one after another his comrades were slaughtered.
In morgue of Marines, alone standing there.
He crouched ever lower, ever lower with fear.
"They can't let me die! They can't let me die here!
I'll cover myself with the mud and the earth.
I'll cover myself! I know I'm not brave!
The earth! the earth! the earth is my grave."
The grave that they dug him had flowers
Gathered from the hillsides in bright summer colours,

I'm an Army veteran from the 1980's, now 58 years old and not in great shape. I was not a grunt, I was in small arms repair, and guns have continued to be my main hobby all my life. I even worked for a major gun manufacturer for a few years. My civilian career as a machinist only adds to my useful expertise. So I would seriously consider going over there if I could be processing incoming small arms somewhere near the Polish border. Preferably on the Polish side!
Yeah, who hasn't had Rambo daydreams looking at that stalled convoy? But I know I'd be in the way and my young kids (second marriage) might get left without a dad.
Unless a clear position for me to help with small arms appears, the best thing I can do is keep working at my job here and send as much money as possible to charities supporting the Ukrainian military or refugees. So far I've sent $2500, and I plan to send another $500 when I get paid at the end of this week. I've also contacted my congressman and senators, and I take part in protests to keep other people aware of what is going on.
Edited many days later to say that I had some brand new folding solar panels with USB and 18 Volt outputs, and I just shipped off three of 60 Watt rating plus three of 120 Watt rating to Ukraine, earmarked for military use. Maybe worth $700 or so altogether? I paid the shipping to a freight forwarding service in the USA. Still looking for ways I can help. My sister has given "some money" to an organization feeding refugees along the Polish border... if I know my sister, "some money" means several thousand dollars.

If this is not your war, then you have no business in Ukraine, unless your paid security or with a legitimate humanitarian organization. What's wrong with people? Can they not separate the gaming world from reality? I served 8 years in the army, and I would not set foot on that soil as a foreign insurgent. The side you are fighting with will have no loyalty toward you. Food and ammo rations will go to local fighters first. The "suicide" missions, however, will be assigned to you first. You will be disposable. Maybe lose your life, to draw mortar fire, so the Ukraine army can see where it's coming from. Just stay home. If you must fight and risk your life, do it for your family, or your freedom. Something that has a reason.

There are 16,000 of them in-country so far. If they were being used like the Grunts in Halo are, well we’d hear about it by now and that would affect the Legion’s recruitment, wouldn’t it?

Information I heard in Canada was they have all the non-combat volunteers they can use. They said the process to sign up is through the Ukrainian Embassy. They also said they are only interested in those with military training and experience, to serve in the foreign brigades. People shouldn't travel there to sign up, but check with the embassy in their country first. The Ukrainian military organizer said they were only interested in people with military training, who know things like rules of engagement, military command and communication structure, and so on. So it isn't like the Spanish Civil War at all. People who only know how to operate a firearm and have a few survival skills are not the people they are looking for in the foreign brigades.

Most western ex. military, even combat veterans, that I have worked with were used to an immense and competent command and support structure, with equipment, food, shelter, medical and lots of tax dollars backing them up.
Add to this the likely lack of any language skills to integrate into a command structure, and the recently discharged squaddie is going to be a liability to others and danger to themselves. Maybe ex SFs with Russian language skills, medics/corpsmen and doctors/nurses, or expat Ukrainians could contribute. But the rest? Help refugees or make a donation instead.

As an Army combat veteran, I completely agree with his statement where he said that all of you young new guys are just being a "hindrance" rather than being considered help! I agree with his statement because I myself was a paratrooper infantry soldier with more training and experience than other soldiers around me, so I had to instead continually worry about protecting either the new soldiers with little training or the young 18 years old volunteer afghan militia that we had patrolling along with us. Then, the situation was made even worse when had female army soldiers come over to visit us in order to cook for us and help us with medical treatment, but instead of fighting whenever they heard gun shots, they just dropped everything, including their rifles and either ran away or hid in the bunkers.
These female soldiers would also run toward me and beg me for protection while I was in the middle of returning fire to the Taliban, so then I had no choice but to stop what I was doing and instead focus on protecting these terrified female soldiers and also constantly keep an eye on the new soldiers and young afghan militia that had no idea what they were doing and often ran toward me, rather than to stay and shoot! Some of them even made so many mistakes that I almost got killed because of them, so I just could not rely on these people, even if I wanted to do so.
This is why I completely agree and support his statement on saying that young newbies from any nation should NOT be traveling to Ukraine to join the fight for any reason at all, specially not to try to be a hero because you will not only be a complete hindrance, but you can also get one of your own teammates hurt or killed as well, like what exactly happened to me on various occasions, whenever I had young newbies or females soldiers in my team.
This is not a game, this is life or death, so you need to suck up your pride and instead think with your head, rather than with your heart, or else the consequences can be very bad and I say this from multiple years of experience that I have in this matter, and not just because I want to talk or support any statement here! Don't play with your life, no matter how hardcore you feel like or no matter how sad you may also feel like as well! You will thank me later once you get older and see everything that you could have lost and all of the problems that you also have to deal with, simply because of the immature and unwise actions that you made when you were younger.
This message is not just for the young guys, it also goes out to any older people out there with no combat experience and also to females who have no combat training or to those females who have any doubt at all when it comes to dangerous situations or dealing with anyone's pain, because these doubts will eventually come out during combat and get others hurt very bad. So do not do it, even if at least for the sake of keeping others safe from your hindrance and mistakes!

The biggest impediment is not knowing the language. It takes months of difficulty and frustration to learn a useable amount of Russian or Ukrainian. It just adds to the nightmare of going into someone else's fight and makes the likelihood of getting killed much greater. I did military service. I suppose what that gives me is some perspective on the amount of training required to be useful as a soldier. I would think even a capable soldier would find the language barrier alone, very daunting, let alone a person with no military experience. I think military training is a shock to most people. It is a foreign experience and you realise that for soldiers, not much has changed in 2000 years...except the weapons.

Wow, interesting to hear the first-hand experience. Being under constant bombardment certainly has extreme psychological impact. My father fought in the Croatian war of independence, or as we call it the Homeland War. He says that war is not just constant combat, quite the contrary in fact. Makes sense, they were holding positions for days waiting for the enemy to attack. And mind you, he was in a recon platoon (although it was just called recon, usually it only meant they were the furthest forward). The battles were usually relatively short, since they were always outgunned and outnumbered in the early stages of the war, so they would usually try to hold where they could and if the enemy brought their tanks and AFVs out (which they often couldn't engage at all because they had literally no AT weapon to speak of) they would fall back to the next position, the next village. He says they were constantly bombarded by mortars and artillery. Days upon days of bombardment, rain, cold. He says it broke many men psychologically, they just couldn't take it anymore after some point. He says he vividly remembers when they captured a small mortar (probably only a 60mm) and a few rounds of ammo and they fired those few small rounds back at an enemy position, they felt as if they were half-way to winning the war. My father also believes a large factor in the stunning victory of our army in Operation Storm and the massive enemy retreat was that the enemy soldiers for the first time in the war experienced such a massive artillery bombardment, which they weren't used to.
