I forgot to include one more important step to creating the stickers, which is to add registration marks to your sticker sheet in order for it to cut properly! It's super simple, just one button to click. But you can look this up online to see how to do it for your cutting machine's software!
Here's another way to make stickers if you need a cheaper and easier option and you have a computer and printer :) Obviously the stickers won't be of as high a quality as Jordan's but they'll work! 1. Draw out your design and take a photo, edit it to your liking (I like to use snapseed or vsco or even instagram's editing tools) 2. Upload it to your laptop (for me, the easiest way is uploading the photo to my mobile gmail app and then retrieving it from gmail on my computer) 3. Take the image and put into into microsoft powerpoint. Using the editing tools, remove the background until just the sticker design is your image. You don't have to edit every scrap of your background if it's difficult but remove the major portions. 4. You can further edit the colour, crop, resize, duplicate etc. Being a tech noob I like powerpoint's editing tools. 5. Arrange as many "sticker" images as you can on another slide. 6. Using sticker paper (this can be found at shops where you buy your printer ink cartridges), print out the image but make sure to adjust printer settings on your computer. 7. Handcut stickers out. You can package them in little bags as "sticker flakes". :)
Hi Jordan, thanks for this video! Just thought I'd leave a quick comment because I noticed you go through a lot of unnecessary steps in Photoshop to get the line drawing vector in Illustrator. You can save yourself a bit of time by just adjusting the levels in Ps > open the file in Ai > click 'Image Trace' > this will leave you with a vector straight away. You can choose to hit 'ignore whites' to get a transparent background or simply 'ungroup' the image after tracing it and deleting the background. Hope this can help :) X
This video is literally life changing, i have been wanting to start selling my own stickers for a time now, but didn't quite knew how to do it, but this video made me feel more motivated than ever
Phenomenal! Quick tip for Photoshop. If your photo has high contrast to begin with (well defined black/dark and white/light spaces), you can avoid all these steps by using the threshold option in adjustments. This will turn every pixel into either white or black and you can adjust the strength of the effect. This will do exactly what you did with the levels just in one step! To make a selection of one of the colors, you can navigate to select -> color range. It'll open up a window and you'll need to select the desired color with the dropper tool. Click okay and boom, you have it all selected. I've had to do this a lot, and found that doing it in two steps literally saves DAYS in the process!! Beautiful work!!
I just want to say thank you. I was double major in college and my art degree took a backseat, so I was far behind my peers. I had, maybe three different people try and show me how to use photoshop: I am not a techie, it takes me a long time to figure things out and no one had the patience to continue helping me. So thank you. This tutorial was so easy to follow and an honest godsend. I’ve been wanting to make prints and stickers to sell, but I couldn’t get my software to work for me. Thank you so much. You’re a darling.
I am so glad I found your channel. The way you shot the videos, how calm you talk, and even the background music! Makes it more understandable. Thank you!
I think to speed up the process, you could bring the photo into photoshop, bump up brightness and contrast all the way. Bring all your lineart onto a separate layer, set to multiply. Color on layers underneath in photoshop. Bring the doc into illustrator, image trace, arrange how you want. Maybe you already tried it, but watching this it seems like to process is more complicated than necessary
This tutorial is incredible! One thing you might want to look at though is that when you’re adjusting the levels you can just drag the black and white arrows under the little mountain shapes instead of using the eye dropper tools over and over. My teacher normally just recommended pulling them to the “base of the biggest mountain” for all photos to get a nice balance but you can also pull them in even further to get that nice black on white feel.
This is so cool! I’m not even looking into making my own stickers but her voice just had me so mesmerized! Also YOUR DRAWINGS ARE SO AESTHETICALLY PLEASINGGGG
f you don't have a steady hand or don't want to color in the spaces in illustrator, you can expand the image which occurs after live tracing and then you can just pick a color and it will fill in the white space without crossing over the black line.
this is great! im a visitor as i saw this in suggestions and as a fellow artist im always inclined to see how other people do their thing... not sure if it was your preference or not, but in illustrator there are tools and presets within image trace that would do all the work that you did in photoshop for you! i think the one that would work for you is called "line drawing". also, if you just click the "ignore white" checkbox in the advanced settings for the image trace window you wont have to delete the white layers. hope this saves you some time and extra steps, and thanks for sharing your process :) beautifully filmed video
I know this is old now, the technology has prob changed a bit, but thanks so much for sharing the excellent info. I'm going to try it using your instructions. I miss really miss your stickers - and you - @Jordan Clark. Hope things are beautiful in your world.
Thanks for a very interesting and useful video. The command button is actually the Control button (Ctrl) in Windows PCs. I use Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V all the time to Copy and Paste things in Photoshop. Lovely stickers! Keep up the good work!⭐⭐👍🎨
Quick tip: in illustrator in the dialog box for tracing you can hit “ignore white” and you won’t have to select similar and delete to get rid of the white!
A couple things that should help you in Photoshop... Instead of copy/paster, use cmd-j (jump to new layer) with a selection. In levels, don’t use eyedroppers, instead drag the sliders under the histogram - drag the black slider (left side) to the right until the blacks look good; drag the white slider (right side) to the left until the whites look good. This changes the settings for 0 and 255 (black and white points respectively).
this video has definitely inspired me to make stickers bc i’m obsessed w stickers but never thought of making them. also what is the difference between the cameo and the canon printers. what do each do and what r the steps in using both
this is awesome! thanks for making this video!! in case this would be helpful to you - instead of deleting the white after using image trace, in the image trace settings panel thing under ‘advanced’ there’s a setting “ignore white” that makes it super easy and gets rid of the white automatically. it’s super nice :) love your work!
WOW. I have the cricut explore air 2 but seeing the advanced cutting and outlining options the silhouette has makes me rethink my purchase decision, lol! This video is incredible, thank you 😌
Thank you so so much. I have been trying to convert my hand drawings into digital but alas the result was a disaster. Love the way you have explained the entire process slowly and beautifully. I want to make surface pattern designs and this has really helped. Thank you so much once again. Stay blessed always.
I use Avery name label stickers. They're intented to have those "hi my name is" things printed on them" with company logos. I draw or print on them, cut out the shape, and done!
Great tutorial! Thanks for sharing. FYI- in the image trace panel, there’s an “ignore white” option which will save you the extra steps of deleting the white pieces :)
This is a fantastic tutorial, most of the stickers tutorials don’t go into such depth on the process so thank you! I know you were doing this on your computer but could you do this on a iPad Pro? My computer has been acting wonky and I’m thinking of buying a iPad so I didn’t want to have to buy both to make my own stickers.
I've owned an iPad Pro for about a year and there is an app that gives you the computer version of photoshop it's called Astro pad but so far I haven't found anything for illustrator. There are other apps for creating vectors though I really like vectornator. I'm sure you could do it you would just have to play with it a bunch and find apps that work for you, it may be easier to just fix your computer. The only thing I don't like about the iPad is that all of the apps have been simplified. Other than that Im absolutely in love, my favorite drawing app so far drawing has been procreate. I hope this helps!!! And good luck to you!
PassionFlower Studios Thank you for the reply and info. You’re right I should just get my computer fixed or buy a new one cause it would make making stickers an easier venture. Can you do what you do on the iPad on your computer? And do you think it just be easier to go that route than buying a new computer and iPad?
I'm glad someone else was able to give you some info about using an iPad, because I don't own one and I can't give you any advice there! However, I do love the ease and accessibility of my laptop. It's a bigger screen, which is great for designing, and I know I can get any program I need. I'm sure there are people here on UA-cam who have made videos about using an iPad for designing, so maybe you can get more info to decide on which one to invest in!
You can do more on a computer in my opinion. Just because you have access to the complete version of apps. Something that’s really cool though that you might want to check into is eventually getting both because there’s this app called duet? I believe that’s the name there’s probably others. It allows you to use your iPad as a drawing tablet that hooks up to your computer so you could use the full programs on your iPad. You could also get a drawing tablet to go with your computer there’s some pretty cheap ones out nowadays. There’s so many crazy things available I would just do some research and see what will work best for you and your budget. If you do end up getting an iPad GET THE 13 INCH! I’ve heard of so many people regretting getting the smaller ones so save yourself the hassle 😘
Hi i think you can just sync your computer with your ideap because i did. With all the free app s save your money. You do not need all this newer devices. Check your setting for the syncing option. Bye. @@passionflowerstudios5690
I watched this video just out of curiosity and wow, there are a lot of steps! I had no idea stickers could be this complicated. Yours are lovely :) Since you seem to be working on a Mac, you might want to check out Affinity Photo and Affinity Design - they’re like Photoshop but created for Macs, takes up much less space and the computer is much more responsive. Just a suggestion!
First of all thank you so much to talk about the way you are making your stickers, it's really interesting and they are so lovely. Second I would love to know which font you used for the title of your video "how i make stickers".
Hi love your video. I currently use a Cricut so it was interesting to see a silhouette in action. It seems so much simpler and cleaner with the cut lines. Quick question does a silhouette cut kraft sticker paper? Cricut only works on white 😏
I bought some of these older stickers awhile back. I've used a lot of them now so I was going to buy more, but I saw these ones aren't in your shop anymore. Will they be coming back?
Ohhh my girl thank you so so so much this is so wonderful an awsome right now I am really into chalk art and now I can covert any image or my writing into chalk art, I was wondering how to get rid of the background wish I could show you what I just created it's wonderful. Now I gotta figure out how to place pages I create in ID for a spiral notebook
Great video! I am curious though, why did you not just start in Illustrator and use Image Trace from the beginning? Does it loose it's original shape more than going through the steps in Photoshop first?
Thank you for such a great tutorial. I have one question though. After u fill in the color in illustrator, do u merge the two layers? The black line and color layers? What's the step before arranging them on a sticker sheet.. Merging The layers, drawing a rectangle and them placing the objects?? Kindly sort out this doubt for me.. Thank you so much. 😊😊
Hi Jordan, thanks for uploading such an informative and inspiring video. I was just wondering what type of printer you use and if you have any recommendations for artists who like to scan and print their work? Thanks
Thank you very much for this tutorial. I am still in the illustrating stage. I have yet to really think hard if I'm ready to invest in a Cameo, now 4 is out! :)
On illustrator you could just check the option “ignore white “ on the advanced tracing options instead of doing that selecting and filling process to make the background transparent
Hey Jordan, I just found out your channel day before yesterday.. and I'm I love with these videos like- I have made so many projects till now.. they turned incredible and my friends did ask me that how did you make these, I would always suggest everyone to subscribe your channel.. even ya! You were the perfect one to inspire me to start a buissnes!!💫 this is a perfect place! And lastly I would like to request you to make a video about "what to do with your empty spray bottles"💘 Love from Seirra!🍒💕
Maybe this is a stupid question but there’s something I don’t understand. You print the drawings first with your canon printer and then put them into your cut machine? Or the canon printer cut them?
Hello Jordan ❤️. I was wondering if you can do a full tutorial on using Procrate and Adobe illustrate on a ipad. Just because I’m curious how it works, plus I think that’s what you’re currently using. Pleaseeeeee thank you so much 💕
Very well done video, and I love your drawings! QUESTION: You're using 8 1/2 by 11 sticker paper, but you're only printing out a 4 by 6, so does that mean you're wasting the rest of the paper? Or are you putting a few 4x6s on the sheet?
Hello Jordan! How did you learn to work with these programmes? Any tips for a beginner? I would like to make stickers for my students, to make my classes more enjoyable 😊 thank you!
I forgot to include one more important step to creating the stickers, which is to add registration marks to your sticker sheet in order for it to cut properly! It's super simple, just one button to click. But you can look this up online to see how to do it for your cutting machine's software!
hi! i hope you'll answer, are your stickers waterproof? :)

Also she deleted the white and then colored it in manually. You can just change the color of the whites.

On illustrator you could just check the option “ignore white “ on the advanced tracing options instead of doing that selecting and filling process to make the background transparent
thanks so much for the tip, i don't know how i missed that option! :)
Your voice is so soothing! Loved the video, thank you so much for all of the detail!
