    Great review. I will say I own this tent and after some extensive usage have a little to add: I live in CO and we get some odd weather at times including freak snow storms in spring and autumn. This tent does very well in even torrential rain and snow way above what it is designed to be used in. Had a blizzard one time, this tent didn't even flinch. But, heavy rain or snow does expose its weakness, all that water proof material means it's not breathable, there is very little air flow inside if you have the windows all closed. In cold weather with 2 people inside it, you do get quite a bit of condensation inside. Those top 2 vents are not optional, they have to be open while you are inside of it. If the weather is bad enough to where you think you need to close them, then you do not want to be in the tent at all. Bring something to compensate for condensation, even a little kitty litter to wick moisture from the air helps loads.
    2) While it is not rated for it, I have had this tent up in 50+ mph winds, and it handled it like a champ. You need the guy lines in anything above 10 mph, but it actually did way better than I expected. I was expecting it to collapse, it did not. I was expecting a rip in a seam or at the guy points, there was not.
    3) The little hanging hook point is not great. I only use it for the lightest of LED lanterns, anything more than a half pound in weight and it creates a weak point where water collects on top and starts to eventually seep in. Really heavy lanterns can also cause water to come in those top vents. So use that attachment point with caution.
    Other than that, this is the best tent I have ever owned. I love it and it really does set up in just about a minute as shown.

      Nice to know about the center lantern. I usually an inflatable lantern that is super light so I haven't experienced the sag. I agree with the need for vents though, especially when it rains.

      I have been eyeing up this tent for the past couple of years but have always hesitated due to reviews mentioning condensation and water ingress
      Whilst I appreciate the review, especially as it was left up overnight which a lot of reviews don't do, I was intrigued by the fact she said, there's no condensation on the inside, there was never going to be much as there was nothing in the tent creating any heat,
      is always better to have a review like yours where the tent has been used in real world situations
      Thanks for you information on this particular tent

    • @jordanbeard6687
      @jordanbeard6687 3 роки тому +6

      @@johnclark448 Glad it was useful to you. Yeah, the condensation is it's biggest issue. But there are a lot of things you can use to mitigate it. The last camping trip I went on with it just this last Labor Day weekend, we just left 1 window cracked a bit the entire trip. No issues, and even in light rain we got no moisture inside. If your tent has condensation issues in it, try bringing a ziploc baggie with kitty litter and opening it up in the tent. Seriously helps a lot.

    I bought this tent mostly based on your excellent review. I was replacing a 20 year old Hillary dome tent that had served us incredibly well. We love this Coleman cabin tent. True 6ft center height. Huge windows. Zippers operate smoothly. Sturdy construction and heavy duty material. 2 big pockets inside plus lantern hanger. Fits me and my wife with a inflatable queen mattress plus two chairs and small table and all our gear. It's also a great looking tent. We love it.

    I used on of these my 6 years as a BSA scout master. We camped once a month. I had several better and more expensive tents, but I used this one most weekends because of the speed, and quality. It saw a lot of use and was always waterproof and never failed me in a storm.

    Love your videos. I’m old now, but I remember going camping with my Girl Scout troop. We 11 and 12 year olds had those old, heavy, army green, canvas tents that we had to set up by ourselves in groups of 4 Girl Scouts per tent. They were gosh awful heavy, and they stunk. After about an hour of yelling, bossing, screaming, biting nails, hair pulling, “taking breaks,” and crying, we usually got the tent up. ( Our scout mothers were up in the cabin while we were out “in nature”. ) Good memories. Tents have certainly improved since the 1960s. ; )

    For a 3-season tent, it did amazing in a 4- season condition... and, I wouldn't call that "light snow" It stuck and it looked like it was layered ; it just wasn't blizzard conditions, but I lived in Northern Nevada for a few years, and that wasn't light snow... I am really impressed by this tent... You didn't even have the rain fly on it... I know the fly for this tent doesn't go to the ground, but it you could make one or find one that would ; this could possibly withstand some wind storms too... This is why Coleman has been around for over 100 years.... Thanks so much for this great review... On another note... could you possibly find some tents that could be used for everyday "emergency" or homeless situations that alot of us are having to face these days... It would take a tent that would be able to go up and down quickly and easily; and often, as much as every day; be 4-season, probably have a vestibule ( for gear and/or bathroom/ toilet area...).and hold up through it all, , as well as pack away small and lite. Which design/ construction would be best ( dome, pop-up; teepee; cabin,and materieal, etc) I can't express to you how important this is now-a-days with all that is happening in our country and around the world.... People are having to redefine exactly what "homelessness" really means... or, exactly what makes a "home".... thanks again for your honesty and integrity and God Bless.You.

    Hello Samatha. I am looking to buy the Colemen 6 Person Instant Cabin tent. You mentioned that the cabin tents have an issue with condensation. I did have lots of issues with condensation in a big 10 person Coleman Cabin tent that was about 15 years old as well as all of the water proofing properties were gone and rain literally poured right through it. Question for you is, do you think if I bought the Rain Fly accessory add-on for this tent, that it may help with the condensation issue? I camp mostly in the late fall when it is cool during the day and really cold during the night so when I sleep, it causes lots of condensation to build up on the ceiling and then drips all over my sleeping bag and other gear. I welcome any of your expert advice. Thank you so much, Scott

    It looks like the guylines are mandatory, right? Since the poles can pivot at the hub, so each of the four poles can move (collapse) towards each other with the very slightest force. Not like a conventional tent, where the poles are continuous (i.e. rigid) through the center. Am I right?

    Trying to camp with my partner and a large dog has been complicated. We do a lot of 3 day kayaking trips to the coast and I can’t keep affording hotels, but I also need to sleep or I am not a fun (or nice) person. The problem is that the nervous pooch paces, and when she paces I stay awake. It’s ridiculous but I’ve solved the problem with a doggy cot between our people cots. Now our 3 cot set up ends up being just under 7feet long and 7.5 feet wide. My partner’s ancient dome tent was 10x12 and I did end up tripping and bending the dog cot, which I then had to replace. Ugh! The tent also got ripped and a pole bent so it needs a replacement. I’m really stuck on how much space around the cots I need to not trip over everything and break stuff. I’m leaning towards to 6 person cabin tents, especially the instant setup, but I wonder how a smaller footprint cabin tent would compare to a larger footprint dome tent. If a 10x12 foot dome tent was the right size, but barely, would a 9x10 cabin tent also work? Any advice? I’m afraid if I move up too much, the tent might not fit in the camping sites. California coastal camp grounds are not large. Plus, I work 4 looooonngg days for those 3 days off and I am super tired so I want to save all my energy for the water not putting up a tent, and some of the 8 person tents seem to start to get a bit complicated. I sure would appreciate any advice you or anyone might have!

    • @LoneCrowAdventures
      @LoneCrowAdventures  2 роки тому +1

      I might actually look at a tunnel style of tent that has more room to walk around. I think in the 6p instant coleman you'd be a bit cramped with two cots and a dog cot. They do make an 8p version of the Coleman instant cabin tent which is what I would go with if I were you.

  • @suziemyers9855
    @suziemyers9855 2 роки тому +1

    I've just spend a few days in this tent and I'm not in complete agreement with the glowing reviews. The rainfly allows rain to pour into the tent via the front door. The door opening is further out than the fly. Also, I have another Coleman tent with a continuous zipper for the front door, which, after this experience, would be superior than the two zippers that meet at the bottom, just another place for rain to come in. I'll apply a larger patch where those two zippers come together and rig up something to protect the door from the rain. I read reviews on Coleman's site and the rain fly appears to be the biggest shortcoming. Having said that, the set up was pretty easy (the poles are torqued that make the pulling the tent taunt difficult, maybe after using, they'll straighten out) and the walls seem fairly impervious to the rain. Plenty of room for me, my junk, and my dog. I'm a 60 year plus camper so not unfamiliar with camping in various weather conditions.

    • @LoneCrowAdventures
      @LoneCrowAdventures  2 роки тому

      I will agree with the rainfly downfall. If there is windy it can blow the rainfly off or blow water up underneath the rainfly so it's important to make sure sides of tent are facing wind direction instead of front or back.

    I try to find good and bad reviews of most 'important' purchases. I'm currently looking to see what tents are available. I've had this tent since 2013 and a clip on one of the legs has started acting up - i could still camp tonight if needed. Otherwise, the tent has been great, i put it over a cheap tarp every time i set it up to protect the floor from rocks, etc.. I'm in Arizona and camp at least monthly yet my tent rarely sees rain. Typically I don't know it has rained until I wake up and go outside to find everything wet. We do however get wind, lots of it. Guy'd out properly, this tent easily puts up with heavy wind. For 9 years (2022 now) this tent has been a champ and while I am looking to replace it, I can't find anything i like better.

    • @LoneCrowAdventures
      @LoneCrowAdventures  3 роки тому +1

      For us, we will in Northern Wisconsin which has some higher levels of humidity. As such, 4 season tents tend to get a lot more condensation in our area. It's very common around here to use 3 season tents year round. We used our Big Agnes Tiger Wall Platinum 3p for Camping in a good of snow. That's a really expensive tent though, intended for ultralight backpacking so I wouldn't go with that one necessarily. For winter campouts we prefer to hot tent camp in the Luxe Hercules which with its geodesic style design can withstand heavy snowfall.
      Winter 4 season tents naturally will provide more thermal insulation than 3 season tents. Adding up to a maximum of an 8 degree Fahrenheit difference between outside and inside temps. The biggest considerations for if you need a 4 season tent is the amount of snowfall you are anticipating. If you are only getting a couple inches you will be fine in a 3 season tent, but if you are expecting more than that you'll have to shovel the tent or they can collapse under the weight.
      I recently purchased a Onetigris Iron Wall teepee which I haven't tried yet but have heard some good things about!
      If I were purchasing a 4 season tent I would buy the North Face Mountain 25 ($690) which would be great for mountaineering. For non mountaineering camping I'd strongly consider the Cabelas Alaskan Guide. I haven't tired either of these tents but they are high on my list!!!
