  • Underwater mermaid footage at Long Lake, Michigan. Long Lake is a large inland lake near Traverse City. It may or may not be haunted... you can read the rest of the description OR visit it to make your own decision about the matter. 😱 In this video, Mermaid Phantom (a professional mermaid) can be seen swimming around in Long Lake on a gloomy fall day. Relaxing music accompanies her many tricks and creative dives that are shown throughout this video. I am pleased to announce that Mermaid Phantom has FINALLY summed up the courage to do both front flips AND back flips. Although her bubble rings in this video are broken and a bit pathetic (I blame it on the ghost fears) the rest of the tricks are executed very well.
This is one of my new favorite underwater swimming videos... until The Albatross Shipwreck video finally gets edited. THEN this may have some competition... we'll see! 😉

Never have I EVER been afraid to swim in ANY of the lakes we've visited, except for Long Lake, that is. I didn't understand it at the time, but now I know why I felt so fearful of this lake.
Long Lake is a large inland lake near Traverse City, Michigan. It is a pretty large lake in comparison to most inland lakes, but it isn't anything in comparison to Lake Michigan. My dad, little sister and I were forced to swim here after having all of our previous swimming plans wiped out due to the sudden stormy weather. Taylor Park beach access was the ONLY calm swimming area we could find that day. It was cold, cloudy and a little bit rainy when we arrived at this beach. We hadn't been there before, but all agreed we didn't have any other options. So, we walked past the "Swimmer's Itch May be Present" signs, shivered off our warm clothes & hopped into the cool water of this freshwater lake.
It was an interesting place to swim. The water was very clear, but the gloomy weather made the water very dark. Dad and I swam around and explored while my sister paddle boarded around. Both dad and I agreed that there was something rather spooky about this lake.
FIRST. The water was dark. That made it difficult to know how close you were to hitting the bottom when diving underwater.
SECOND. The lake was eerily void of life with the exception of a few patches of seaweed. We did not see a single fish in the lake at all. Not even in the scarce patches of seaweed, which is where fish are usually abundant.
THIRD. I had this strange feeling that I can't really describe. It felt like something was there that wasn't really there... I had this constant anxiety that something was going to pull me under. I felt like I was being "stalked." However, I also knew that there couldn't POSSIBLY be anything in that lake bigger than me OR anything that would be interested in attacking. I mean, we don't really have any fish like that in Michigan. I didn't know why I was so paranoid until just moments ago when I researched Long Lake to write this description.
Countless people have died in Long Lake... and around the area too. Apparently, a mother and her young children drowned in the lake due to a car accident. Many others have drowned in that lake too, and there was even a murder/suicide happened nearby.
I don't know if you believe in ghosts or not, but I am a strong believer in ghosts. Not the silly white figures that go "boo," but the spirits of the dead that don't always pass on to the other realms. I'm pretty sure I felt the energy that day. It was terrifying to swim there, although I'm still going back for a fall color swim regardless. 😶
